The other Gold Medalist on the Joshua card fought a guy who failed at European level against Edis Tatli and boxed Campbell's ears off.
The first 2 rounds was Campbell getting his jab out, doing alright, but 3rd round on this Mendy character started to come out strong landing good, solid shots.
The disturbing part was how Mendy was countering Campbell, and cutting the distance as if he was the one with the amateur pedigree. Especially the countering part, did I mention the knockdown?
The decision was split, I'd say Mendy did enough to win, now it would be one thing to get sparked by a journeyman, but to lose a 12 round decision to a guy who belongs at a level (below European), Campbell should be dealing with fairly easily and was meant to.
I said "ears boxed off" even though the decision was close, because a guy who couldn't succeed at European level beating up an Olympic Gold Medalist for a decision imo warrants that description
What are your thoughts? Is he cut out for the pros? Can he come back? Discuss.
The lads above have it - still fights in an amateur style and hasn't adapted to the pro game. He also isn't physically strong enough to keep these off him, and he doesn't hit hard enough to get their respect.
I think he has really good skills, and would be better going down in weight if at all possible. I believe he fought at bantamweight as an amateur.
It doesn't relate to him, but now that you said it, it reminded me of that dreadful loss. Andy Lee is what I was thinking of (Vera 1) cuz with a KO loss you're left with a dignity of the words "IF" he hadn't been caught "MAYBE" he would've turned it around.
Well, when you have about 150 WINS as amateur you'd think he'd make adjustments. Did you notice Mendy was countering Campbell lol? Embarrassing.
I don't blame them for laughing, Campbell should've given this kid a lesson and put on a clinic.
Yeah....course you were mate :lol1:

The part that was weird is how effectively Mendy countered him, I mean this guy failed at European level, weird.
People are now saying that his father's cancer diagnosis has effected his preparation. It's bull**** though because his father was diagnosed a while ago, and Luke has previously said that it's inspired him to win for his dad. *shrugs*

Seems like a nice enough guy, but he's European level at best.
He has no physical attributes to rely on given that he's not very fast at the weight, has absolutely no power and his general strength isn't there...He was simply bullied at the weekend, just physically pushed around.
That means he has to rely entirely on skill level and smarts, not great when your skill level doesn't look too good and you showed no boxing IQ to try and change the style of fight. He was also getting outboxed and countered by a Euro level opponent.
That pitty-pat flurry and run might work in the amateurs, but not as a pro.
I like Campbell he is a good kid, met him on a few occasions at fight cards and it seemed he was destined for big things.
I agree his power was non existant against this chap however I think its also a case of not being taught enough by his trainer. I think Campbell would do wonders under John D Jackson as a trainer, he needs to learn to rough up the opposition fight abit dirty on the inside and improve his power.
A switch now would be benefitial as he is young and a change now would be perfect.

Why is everything you do related to Khan somehow? :lol1:
"My Amir got sparked by a journeyman but that's not as bad as losing a 12 round decision!"
So awkward.....
Anyway I was never that impressed with Luke Campbell. He's supposed to be our greatest ever amateur or something but I just didn't see the superstar potential in him.
I think he may have taken that "teak tough" African kid lightly doe.
I saw an interview with him and Kugan before the fight where they were basically joking about him losing as if it wasn't a possibility.

He seems to have too much of an amateur style and can't fight inside for sh1t.
He doesn't seem to have much if any power at all to keep people off him.
He was a bantamweight as an amateur or something.
