why pay a sanctioning fee for a belt he has ZERO chance of keeping?
There were 3 possible paths after Saturday, and NONE of them involved Cotto keeping the WBC title.
1. Canelo beats him, of course he loses the title
2. He beats Canelo, refuses to face GGG, and gets stripped
3. He beats Canelo, faces GGG, and gets his face pushed in
So yeah, no point in paying the WBC this time around. He can instead buy quite a few pairs of pink drawers with that money.......
no, they were charging $1.1 so that Cotto could go make $20 million (or more) against Canelo instead of getting his face bashed in by GGG.
The mistake Cotto made was paying the $800k to GGG in the first place. He should have just vacated the title and handed it over to GGG. Nobody watching the fight on Saturday cares one bit whether its a title fight or not.
I agree....Cotto let this BS play out too long....she shoulda dropped the belt right after he beat Martinez
At least everyone knows it now. Cotto never won the real MW title, he fought a crippled old dude at a catchweight, defended it against another shot guy at catchweight, paid $800k to GGG so he could duck his mandatory and now still drops that belt
When Cotto enters that ring he will get some rotten eggs to his face LOL.
What a friggin clown that guy is.
The Martinez fight wasn't at a catchweight.

He couldn't make 68 if he wanted to and it has been that way for awhile with his 3 fights since Dec 2011. Has been..............
Couldn't make 68 if he wanted to......................... tried to CW him at 164...............
Yeah...................... :twak:
Yeah, then they'll say Ward didn't wait for him and "ran" to 175..........

I'm told Cotto felt extorted by WBC because he/Roc Nation already paid $800k to GGG to step aside to allow the fight. It got to be too much.— Dan Rafael (@danrafaelespn) November 17, 2015
I'm told WBC wanted $300k in sanction $ from each fighter, $25k from each promoter. Cotto wanted to negotiate lower $ (common). WBC said no.— Dan Rafael (@danrafaelespn) November 17, 2015
:lol1: insane that they even asked for that much hahahahaha lil'g & his team were about $$$ will always be about $$$
They paid $800k in step aside money? No wonder Loeffler could give two fcuks about the Lemieux numbers.
Plus the WBC's $300k fee is pretty steep.
OK -- I have nothing against big fights... But he should have vacated his 160 belts and fight whatever big fights he wanted to fight... and leave the middleweights fight for those 160 straps (because I've heard that Cotto actually doesn't give a **** about them.)
totally agree 10000%
believe me, Im glad GGG got the money, but my point was that Cotto-Canelo is a good enough fight on its own that I dont think it would have mattered much if the WBC title was on the line or not. Cotto-Canelo could have still taken place regardless of the title.......

No mistake there -- no step aside money for GGG, no Canelo fight (WBC ruling).

This is like on Seinfeld when George looks to do a preemptive break up before a woman has a chance to dump him.
This is the ultimate duck, under no circumstances was Cotto going to get in a ring with GGG. The WBC said it themeselves, they tried to make the Cotto/Canelo fight for two years but Cotto kept backing out. It wasn't until HBO stepped in and refused to air Cotto's last fight without an agreement to fight Canelo next did it happen.

Cotto paid the step aside money so he could get the upper hand on the Canelo fight negotiations and to get better odds to win the Mayweather lottery.
Yeah, but now without that MW belt, Mayweather may not be as interested at fighting him at 154.1.
wasn't very clear from the begining that the WBC wanted the cotto-canelo just to get the money from them?, now everybody is surprised about the fee.
its all about the fff money.
Damn, GGG getting 800K and a free title, after canelo drops it.

No. The WBC allowed the step aside to begin with so they could get a sanctioning fee on the biggest fight in boxing. Cotto doesn't need the WBC to make $20 million. They were charging $1.1 to extort him. I agree he should've vacated but the WBC could have stripped him instead of granting him the step aside option in the first place. But because they wanted money they allowed the fight to happen.
I agree with everything you said. It makes sense and I believe it's true. Why pay the fees if he knows if he wins he won't fight GGG so he gets striped anyway. If Canelo wins then Cotto has no title anyway.

He paid $800k so he could keep pretending to be the MW champion.
