We keep hearing how great this guy is, but the only title he has won was against Ishe Smith. Is that the standard for being a great fighter now? Beating Ishe Smith for a championship?

He isn't great. .he is one of the most skill fighters today. .and #1 guy at 154..name one at 54 better than him? Had Canelo cut the ring off on him like one dimensional Angulo did maybe he doesn't move as much. .look what happens ángulo faces bc of it. .The Punisher made him fight n it was a great fight. .if u don't make Lara fight he won't mind winning a boring fight...
Well excuse me, is beating Ishe Smith impressive to you? If he had beat Ishe Smith for the belt and got the decision over Canelo (in a non-title fight) which win would be more impressive?
It's all about who you beat for the belts, not just winning them. This is why people clowned Broner for his recent title win.
He has wins over Angulo, Trout, Molina and even though he didn't get the decisions against Canelo and Williams he impressed tremendously.
Sure, he should be in more title fights, but it matters on who he is beating for those belts right now. He's 32, it's all about legacy now.
He had a draw vs Molina. Not a win and most thought Molina beat him.
I admit I ain't the biggest fan of his style of boxing but I appreciate the fact he doesn't need to utilize a massive amount of fouling into his gameplan like the guy many see as P4P 2, Andre Ward.
Gotta appreciate someone who plays by the rules he ain't going to entertain you but he deserves props on that.
I do think his career is very strong though and If he has the balls to come up to 160 and fight the best off the bat well you gotta admire that not even Ward was willing to go straight up to 175 and fight Kovalev.
Vanes disagrees
I think Lara is very good 154 lber. One of the top one's there along with some other one's but it ends there. I respect all styles of boxing and can recognize a dominant fighter whether they are more defensive or offensive oriented. Lara is one of the better junior middleweights but he is beatable and does get hit more than his fans care to admit especially when he's under a steady amount of pressure. Lara to me is a boxer that truly excels when a contest is held under a certain tempo. Once he is forced to fight off the cuff is when he begins to lose composure. I think with Canelo likely moving up (hopefully to defend WBC) and Cotto (hopefully defends WBC first) nearing retirement, now would be the perfect opportunity for him to become the kingpin at 154. I think moving to 160 would be a mistake for him given that 2 of the 3 MW champs (Andy Lee and winner of KC/Jacobs) would have a significant size advantage over him and I think that GGG (whose only an inch taller) with his ability to cutoff the ring and land punches consistently coupled with the massive strength and power advantage he'd have is just too much for him to handle.
Well besides P-will, he "arguably" beat a lot of the top competition in close fights he fought which i think GGG would have KO'd, but F it give Lara a shot seems ppl are keen on it, hopefully they don't change there tune if GGG beats him.
hmmm im pretty sure they would say lara isn't a real middleweight yet these same people if ward beat ggg would say ggg exposed! they have no credibility.

Fair play to him for going out there and calling Canelo out for that fight though.

I do appreciate Lara not fighting like a spoiler - but still - doesn't change the fact that he typically looks to coast when he doesn't need to. I mean Cotto gets a whole lot of crap for fighting Delvin, but the supposedly superior Lara gets a pass for fighting him and not just fighting him, but letting him go the whole 12, instead of fighting and acting like a supposedly elite talent and dispatching him in 3-4 rounds like Cotto did.
If he moves up and fights GGG in his first or second fight there - then fair play to him and I'd truly reconsider my position on Lara, because that's cojones.
One of my favorite active fighters and not going to say his resume is ATG status but he's got a solid resume probably the best in the 154 div
His 2 losses were at the best controversial at worst robberies.
He took Angulos soul when he was not given a even playing field, Beat Trout like he stole something, Made Ishe easy work, Would have got the decision against Vanes if it would have been another round, Beat fringe contenders Rodriguez & Hernandez.
He's earned his spot and until proven otherwise is the #1 fighter in his division
Lara is one of the most overrated fighters ever propped up by this forum
He just a yapper who comes up small when the light is the brightest. His best performance was an L against Williams.
He was awful against Molina, awful against Vanes, awful against Angulo and Hernandez, awful against Ishe and Delvin and in another huge fight against Canelo...he sprinted more than fighting. Nothing slick or great in that performance.
He was good against Trout. So in his last 10 fights...he was above-average in just two fights. He can leave boxing and nobody will bat an eye.
He's a timid and "small" fighter. He's had his moments and he failed to shine. Hell...the post-fight press conference of Canelo/Trout during the "call-out" this cat looked more like a fan trying to get Canelo's autograph, not a fight. When Canelo felt like addressing him, he was addressed - come fight night, he fought like he stood there.
Good riddance when his time is done

In this day and age anyone really can become a champion but sometimes you get fed the hard end of a deal.
Lara has beat former champions and he's beat some good guys but got robbed of decisions in some certain circumstances, it reminds me of GGG tbh both guys are doing their own thing one group of people hate this certain guy because of his skin colour and perhaps maybe their is another side who hate the other guy because of his skin colour and these two set of fans gets together and talk a lot of crap.
I don't believe the people rooting for Lara to fight GGG are really true Lara fans I think they're more of a less haters who are upset to see a guy they hate because of skin colour is doing very well for himself in the sport that and the fact he isn't black, so these people beg for him to move up several weight classes to fight someone who might or might not be heard of by the public but they wont want this certain person to do the same that and the fact these people weren't fans of this person prior to the super six that and likely most of these guys never cared about him.
Funny how ones success can lead to some being so pathetic these boxing fans in this game really are spiteful.
Lara ran for his life against Nelo and he nearly got folded in half when Nelo landed an uppercut.
Sure..........................
It that it? 12 round fight? That's it?
OK. Sure.
I needed a good laugh.
He is a supremely skilled boxer. Anyone with eyes can see that and he arguably beat Canelo as well.
Lara ran for his life against Nelo and he nearly got folded in half when Nelo landed an uppercut.
They both lost, Canelo wasn't too efficient, Lara ran.
Half the fight, Lara had to turn his back to run to the opposite corner. His back was literally facing Canelo, it was to the point were Canelo had to SPRINT towards Lara, those parts had nothing to do with boxing.
Both deserve the L, but a fighter who constantly turns his back is nothing getting the W either.
Neither deserved it.
I did say arguably.
