Manager Gary Hyde says he felt bad hearing the news that the WBO decided to strip Guillermo Rigondeaux of his world title belt, but he also faults both Rigondeaux and the people around him for putting him in this position. Hyde had been Rigondeaux's manager for a number of years, but the two appeared to have something of a falling out, with Rigondeaux opting to wait for his contract with Hyde to expire rather that to take some fights.
Considering that Rigondeaux isn't exactly in high demand -- being the ultimate high-risk/low-reward fighter -- passing on fights when very few were willing while also not having any network backing isn't exactly a recipe for success.
"It saddens me to hear that Rigondeaux has been stripped of his WBO world title and on hearing that the WBA are also considering stripping him," Hyde told Michael Woods of Ring Magazine. "Rigondeaux has worked his whole career to become the best fighter in the world. He was successful in doing this, winning two belts (as well as the RING championship), but he has surrounded himself with people who have ruined his career. No promoter or manager would touch Rigo with a 10-foot pole because these people are too difficult to deal with and they put hurdle after hurdle in front of every opportunity offered to Rigo. This is a nightmare situation for one of the best fighters in the world."
Rigondeaux is indeed one of the very best fighters in the world, but hardly anyone would fault you for not knowing that since the Cuban defector has fought only fifteen times in a seven year career. It also seems pretty clear that the "people" who have ruined Rigondeaux's career, as Hyde puts it, is a thinly-veiled shot at Caribe Promotions, a small-time company who scarcely even have a website. But Hyde doesn't absolve the fighter himself from responsibility.
"Rigo has to take some of the blame for destroying his own career," he said. "He has refused many multi-million dollar opportunities I offered to him over the last couple of years. He needs to get rid of these reptiles and get fighting again because not only will he lose his world titles outside of the ring he will also be forgotten."
As a sad matter of fact, Rigondeaux, now 35 years old, could well turn out to be one of the very best fighters of this generation who might soon fade from the memories of even dedicated fans, disappearing as quickly as he arrived on the scene -- all without so much as a whimper.

It's all unwinding at this point. It's not about his fighting style, it's not about Top Rank, etc.
His downfall is due to Caribe and his refusal to leave.
I'll never get the logic of not fighting over promotional b/s like Mikey Rigo and Gamboa did. Just fight let the sh*t run out don't sign no renewal clauses but fight wtf is the point of not fighting is it just not to give them more money they end up loosing more by not fighting.
Make that 1.2 Million after taxes, and not after you have to pay trainer and any other expenses. He's looking at 300k a fight.
And that is still better than absolutely nothing.
Not when everytime you step into the ring you risk a loss, which in turn means you risk getting HALF the money next time.
These guys aren't all Mayweather.. He's already mid 30's... He's got a few years left to earn as much as possible and then thats it... no more money.
I do agree he needs to get rolling, but you cant risk a loss just to fight either.
Also, if he takes a loss in a stay busy fight, now every meaningful fight that could happen for him is gone. Everyone has an excuse not to get in the ring with him.
What are you so angry about? He's been out this year, that's all. He's having management/promotional/legal troubles. It's not that easy to simply say "go fight!" or else that's what he would have been doing. Yeah, it sucks he hasn't fought this year but it's hardly uncommon in boxing. Guys fight 0-1 time in a year allllllllll the time (often for no good reason at all). Rigo will be back and he'll get all of this stuff ironed out eventually. No need to be angry about it lol
My issue is that he doesn't seem to be doing anything about it. This is a mirror image of GGG's situation except GGG formed his own promotional company, fought in obscure areas and was able to still move up in the rankings.
First, I believe only half of what this guy is saying and doubt the other half, I'll list a few names that refused to fight Rigondeaux,
frampton
quigg
mares
st+
there you have 4 big names in the sb division, none wanted any part of GR and some guys are blaming the Cuban for it, you are a bunch hypocrites, regardless of the bad business decision, those 4 boxers ran away from him, and a least one of them jumped ship and buyout his contract to avoid him.

Not angry but disappointed. This man is one of the last pure pugilist in the sport (if you're a fan of pure pugilist ) and he's wasting away hence why he's being stripped of his title. Couple this with the fact that he's not getting any younger and he has been marketability nightmare with inactivity not helping his case.
That said, wouldn't you want to see more fresher faces obtain and defend their titles where fans would be pleased and appreciate their talents creating a demand for these fighter's to fight and defend more? You know their jobs and what they are paid to do?
I've mentioned this in another thread and so again in this one, I could give a f u c k about Rigondeaux at this point.
This idiot is blessed with the winning lottery ticket in being a champion and refuses to cash it in by sitting on the sidelines with this aura of self entitlement. You know how many fighter's today that wish they had the opportunity this fool has but will never get this shot or given the time of day?
And to be brutally honest, I'm amazed how many poster's in this thread is defending this s h i t and siting such baseless points to why he should be sitting on the sidelines and not getting ANY MONEY as supposed to what he thinks he should be getting based on his management team.
I mean really people.
I'm just curious. Why is Fighthype not interested in Rigondeaux's case? They usually spend vast amounts of time interviewing everyone connected to such topic, ie, promoter vs boxer... Fans are wondering why Rigo can't get out of this situation he's in. Where is Fighthype?
Fighthype is only interested when Arum is the subject of chicanery and dishonesty, pretending at the same time they're concerned about multi-millionaire Pacman's welfare. Rigo is too insignificant for them.
I doubt it was that simple. Rigondeaux has always seemed like a guy that just wants to fight. But like I said above, there could have been other stipulations involved in some of these offers, contract extensions, etc. We're only hearing one side of the story which is very vague at that.
The offers were $1.8 million for 3 fights. So $600K per. So if he gets injured in the first fight he would make $600K less expenses for the year.

Who knows what happens behind closed doors but Rigo comes off as a guy who wants to fight for the right paydays more...just my perception
I understand guys wanting to get paid what they feel they deserve but at what point is refusing paydays better than actually getting paid.
The more Rigo fought the more paychecks he cashes and his relevancy would continue to pressure guys to step up and fight it's a whole lot easier to avoid someone who is nowhere to be found and forgotten about.

10% of something is a whole lot more than 100% of nothing, but rigo doesn't seem to be particular smart in his business decisions or the company he keeps.
Bernard Hopkins was quoted as saying, that out of $1million dollars to split in total for the Roy Jones Jr fight (1993), he saw $85,000 net. So yeah, it's important to point out what the fighter is actually going to get to understand why is he saying no to a certain purse.
You can't just say, oh $1.8 million for 3 fights, that's $1.8 million, that's a lot of money, why is he turning it down? Well i'm telling you one reason he's turning it down, because he's not actually going to see that much, he's going to see less than half of that. I'm sure if Rigo was getting $1.8 million dollars after taxes, manager fee, promoter fee, he'd take it. But that's not how it works, I think people have in there mind what $1.8 million dollar would be for them, what they'd do with it. But ignore that first you gotta some people and you gotta pay uncle sam and now suddenly you are not a millionaire, and if you have $500k of that consider yourself lucky.
I hear what you are saying but again if your job pays you 50K a year and says you get 150k for three years. Taxes aren't even brought into it. It is something you have to pay.
As for Bernard, remember a lot of these guys take advances and thats why their checks are short.
Rigo's main problem is too many people with their hands in the cookie jar
Because they think they're too good to have to travel to Japan
That Amagasa fight was entertaining because Amagasa actually came to fight.
Thought Rigo might've been onto something good over there.
