According to multiple industry sources, Gennady Golovkin's October 17 clash with David Lemieux sold approximately 150,000 pay-per-view units. Although one source informed us that the final tally will be "less than that", we're told some numbers are "still trickling in", so they expect "roughly 150 ."
This was Golovkin's first foray into the pay-per-view market. Although he failed to reach the 300,000 mark that previous stars like Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather attained in their first pay-per-view outings, the hard-hitting unified middleweight champion was a big hit at the gate, setting a pre-sale record and ultimately selling out Madison Square Garden with an attendance of 20,568. His performance, a dominant 8th-round stoppage, definitely gave fans something to talk about.

Do you consider this a success or a failure? Maybe GGG isn't the superstar people are saying just yet. Personally I expected to do around 300k but they did state anything over 200,000 was a success and it didn't quite reach that.
However, some good news: Golovkin vs. Lemieux set a Madison Square Garden record, selling over $120,000 in merch inside the arena for the event
Edit: Green is much appreciated :D
150x55=8.2m*0.5 (HBO) = 4.1m + 2m gate + 100k merch = 6.2m - 4m purse = 2.2m - MSG - advertising = profit
I'd also argue that it''s much closer to 60 and not 55.. who the hell watches sports in SD? If vast majority bought HD, that's another 400k.
They did fine.
How much was spent on advertising?
Based on everything I saw, Id say alot.
How much does MSG keep from the gate? You think the fighters get to keep all of the merchandise money? How about NY's crazy taxes?
Im not sure they did fine at all.
I don't know how they turned a profit with 150k buys. They have to give half to the networks. So I don't know how, let's say if 150k is the rela number, that's actually a profit? That's like $4.5million after you split it.

Article says $2m gate, add in the PPV buys you gotta figure it turned a profit or came close.
But it will still put GGG on the bad side of things when it comes to negotiating a fight with Canelo or Cotto.
HBO didn't come out in the 'red', of course...
... Now it's interesting to find out how many PPVs Cotto-Canelo will actually sell...
... In case Cotto-Canelo is a huge PPV success, HBO is likely to press GGG to take the fight on their terms -- maybe GGG isn't a 'businessman', but his handlers are... :)
Meaningless in relation to my post, which was about success. We saw a 4mill+ ppv this year. The fans will pay for fights they want to see. 150k is laughable at best. It means you don't get anymore ppvs unless you hitch your name to someone who counts.
Depends on the expenses, 150k can be quite profitable. Here it allowed them to make a fight that's beyond HBos budget. But yeah, at this point the reward has not caught up to the risk if you're name fighter in Gggs path

dont u get it they didnt even come close to 150 they are just saying that if it were true they would of released the numbers and not just told us
Very few boxers can sell even 150k, and right now none of them are OK with a 2m guarantee on ppv

If 150k was successfu, after those paydays and all that advertising, then we'd see a hell of a lot more ppvs from various boxers. I think it's pretty clear that most promoters aren't going to bother unless they have a shot at 250k +. They certainly aren't going to be running out to put on more 150k ppvs. We can be forgiving in our use of the word "success" but no one does this to break even. And, by that definition, it was a disappointment and a failure.

All the purses add up to 4m
But, but, but Glaser da real one doe :fu2:
This is very conflicting because Kevin Iole and Showtime reported 550k for Mayweather-Berto, while Glaser reported 389k for the fight. They decided to go with Glaser on that one. Now that Glaser came out with the 97k figure for GGG-Lemiuex, they decided to go with Kevin Iole and HBO's 150k figure. Some people are going to have to explain their inconsistencies.
Personally, I don't care about either PPV, I didn't buy either of them and wished they both flopped pre fight.
Sorry if this has been posted, but it's from Kevin Iole yahoo sports. So here you go...

Loeffler said the fight sold slightly more than 150,000 pay-per-view units

I'm not talking as a PPV bit for HBO as there's is talk that they ran out of budget for the year
Sounds like the event was successful

Taffet doesn't directly say 150k, but here's the important part:
Perhaps not a bust at all.
Sounds like the event was successful and they didn't lose any money which this fight was from the start, to not lose any money and get Lemiuex into the ring with GGG with a good purse of 1.5 million
Obviously Loeffler is high and Glaser might be low. Who cares at this stage though? 97-150? It's arguing over 53,000 buys. Take an average and call it approximately 125.
I think that's fair.
Taffet doesn't directly say 150k, but here's the important part:
"Golovkin-Lemieux met or exceeded every benchmark of success which was set going into the event," Taffet told ESPN.com. "The PPV buys solidly met expectations even amidst the Mets-Cubs national telecast registering the highest-ever TBS baseball playoff viewership, including the PPV-critical markets of New York and Chicago. This, combined with the palpable excitement of the sold-out crowd in Madison Square Garden and the in-ring performances by Gennady Golovkin and 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez, encourage us that the next great era of boxing has begun and will continue with the highly-anticipated Cotto-Canelo megafight on Nov. 21."
Perhaps not a bust at all.
Whenever HBO doesn't release the numbers directly, the numbers are fake.
so then I guess we wont ever here you reference the 97k number, since it didnt come from HBO?
And being that I know both Rafael and Taffet, I can assure you that if Dan quoted Taffet in the same article he mentioned 150,000 buys in, he verified those numbers with Taffet. Like Dan or not, he would not quote Taffet in an article that mentioned the number of buys, without verifying it with him
