This was an espn article before the Geale Fight:

NEW YORK -- Middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin took care of business inside the ring when he knocked out Daniel Geale in the third round of a dominant performance to retain his title for the 11th time (and score his 17th consecutive stoppage) on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
The day before the fight, Golovkin took care of his business outside of the ring when he signed a multi-fight contract extension with HBO, K2 Promotions managing director Tom Loeffler told ESPN.com following the fight.
“We are looking forward to continuing our long-term relationship with HBO,” Loeffler said. “They've invested a lot in Gennady, and we feel they are the best television partner we could have to help take his career to the next level.”
The deal calls for a minimum of four fights, although the Geale bout was the first one under the contract. The agreement also has provisions for overseas fights and potential pay-per-view fights, meaning there could be far more than four bouts. The bottom line is that all of Golovkin’s fights, wherever they may take place, will be on HBO or HBO PPV for the foreseeable future.
The fight with Geale was supposed to be the final bout of Golovkin’s previous agreement with HBO, but the terms for Saturday’s fight were renegotiated, and the old deal was ripped up and replaced by the new deal.
So the deal with HBO was a 4 fight minimum:
1st fight: Geale
2nd fight: Rubio
3rd fight: Murray
4th fight: Monroe
5th fight: Lemieux (ppv)
Now, obviously HBO is currently the best place for Golovkin with him being lined up to face the Cotto-Canelo winner in a HUGE fight. However, could there be a scenerio where the WBC and HBO frustrate Team GGG by delaying a Canelo fight and allowing him to take his time, thus bringing Showtime into the mix to offer Golovkin life-changing money?
I would expect HBO to be smart and soon announce another exclusive deal with Golovkin. He is obviously a star they need to keep. I just find it interesting that his current deal from 2014 could technically be up.
He should remain a network free agent. So he can fight anybody.
If he remains exclusively hbo there is canelo, cotto, ward, lee. That's about it do to the network divide.
If he remains a network free agent there is canelo, cotto,Ward, lee, quillin, jacobs, degale, bute, dirrell, lara, and anybody else from 154-168.
Showtime doesn't have any money left after being gouged by mayweather lol gimme a break
You're right they lost so much on that deal with Mayweather :lol1:
it does make sense tho. the deal that ward has been trying to sign with ggg is to fight in the beginning of 2016 the same as he is negotiating with kovalev. both fight in next 30 days and one more fight then the mega fight being their next fight. Granted i dont think team ggg wanted to be boxed in by that kind of deal but maybe there is more to this then they just didnt like ward or the deal.
If they are smart even tho hbo built them up they will enter the open market when the deal is up. Whether u like ggg or not the reality is the guy is on verge of being the biggest star in the sport and i could see showtime offering a ridiculously lucrative deal not as high as mayweathers but the same type of strategy. Its just a thought but i wouldnt be shocked if team ggg does let the hbo deal run out they may be tired of the whole 3 fight deal thing hbo does where the big fight dont happen till the third fight instead of right now
it dont matter even if its up hes going to resign lets be realistic. I do hope fighters start to realize tho exclusive deals are actually a major death nail to the sport. Cant blame fighters for wanting to make money but the reality is hbo exlusive deals have prevented so many fights from being made. hbo politics have killed so many fights and im surprised fight fans have not realized this sooner and started calling them out. One the reasons i think people stick with hbo is because they dont like haymon but the reality is there has been no bigger fence between fighters then hbo over the last 5 years
Showtime would probably have more money in their budget to mess around since Haymon only puts on names there every 3 months or so with prospects filling out their airwaves most the time.
Then again you miss out on better fights and have to deal with guys not fighting you still
Showtime doesn't have any money left after being gouged by mayweather lol gimme a break
That's probably true, although Les Moonves, who owns CBS, has said he is a big fan of Golovkin.
I think its likely GGG stays with HBO for his entire career..im just throwing out a scenerio.
