I'm not, and I feel like I am a dying breed, if not an outlier from the get go. As evidenced by my favorite current fighter sig list, I have no consistent theme of liking a particular place, or style of fighter.
Just for some background, I am a first generation estadounidense who's parents are from South America (Colombia y Peru) and while I am biased in many ways towards latin american culture, I don't hold that constant when it comes to boxing, I only care about a fighters attitude, style, and what they bring to the sport.
Am I the only one here?
I can't always tell if it's trolling on NSB, or legitimate positions on here, but so often do I see people who will diss other fighters from other nations and/or support fighters from their own, despite if all biases were removed, only one of the two fighters may have real reason to draw love and attention from fans of the sport. I think it's kind of sad to be honest that the flag and color of skin is more important than the excitement in the ring or out of the ring personality.
Maybe it's a cultural thing, I think Mexicans and PR's get behind their fighters almost always, but I just can't be that way, I just can't. I don't care what flag you fighter under, I care about your passion, your style, your demeanor.
Am I the only one here?
nothing wrong with being nationalistic at times its like if ur watching the world cup ur going to root for ur home country. i totally dont have a problem with it like some nothing wrong with being proud of your roots but im also not going to like or dislike u strictly on nationality
I don't know about Americans, but the IRS definitely claims Pac. :lol1: :lol1:
Floyd made like 300 million the past year, who do you think the IRS cares more about?
I'm American but I really hate what we do with fighters like Wilder. I see people excusing him to fight anyone and "Just be happy we have an American champion!", when they know he isn't really.
Same with Brit fighters who are hyped before actually doing anything then pretend they don't know what you're talking about when said fighter loses, he just gets replaced with the next name on the hype list.
Same with some PRs who know Cotto's been playing games for a couple years but just scream BORICUAAAAA HATER and block you if you point it out.
So I don't think I bring my nationalism into boxing so much as hate seeing anyone get a free ride so I start making fun of those fan bases.
I would choose a third option in the poll: nationality CAN have a bearing in whom I support...but not often.
When I was a little kid, the Olympics were a big deal, having an almost religious solemnity and significance. The fact that Sugar Ray Leonard had been an Olympic hero was a big deal, and it helped put him above other great fighters in most Americans' minds, I think.
Those days are gone, and more and more we live in one world. This is a good thing, if it means thatthere will be more and more understanding and less and less wars and hate.
On the other hand, today I see more race based identification with fighters. More so than nation based.
It's nothing new. But it isn't going away or diminishing.
I'm from the North West of England, so i'm about as unpatriotic as you can get.
But the odds are that i will be rooting for a British fighter if he takes to the road. After all, these are fighters that you have watched fight by fight as they have came up through their career. It's not always the case though..i was rooting for Chudinov against Buglioni tonight for example.
I don't care where a fighter is from, what colour his skin is, or what language he speaks...if he's an exciting fighter, then i'l root for him.
My favourite fighters are from all over the globe. If you limit yourself to only cheering for fighters from your own countries, then you're doing it wrong and missing out on what the sport has to offer IMO.
But of course, i root for British fighters.
Probly nationalistic, as I root for pretty much every Ukrainian fighter, but I root for fighters from other countries. My favorite fighters Brook, Spence Jr., Joshua, Crawford, Broner.
You can root for anyone u want too anyway but not because they train in the USA. Lol so Americans claiming Pac as their own cuz he trains in wild card??
:lol1: :lol1:
I an Canadian and Filipino but I've never cheered for Donaire. I also used to like Stevenson but not anymore with his ducking ways.
I only like Pacquiao for Filipino boxers and Pascal, Bute, Lemieux for Canadian boxers but my favourites are neither Canadian or Filipino.
That's him!! I'm bout to google him and see what up with that cat. I haven't seen him in a while.
I thought he had potential. He has not been very active at all. It's not like he was gettint KO'ed or anything. Javier Fortuna is the only DR boxer doing anythint significant lately.
You can root for anyone u want too anyway but not because they train in the USA. Lol so Americans claiming Pac as their own cuz he trains in wild card??
Yep. Klitschko, Golovkin, Pac count. They recognize their country's training as inferior.
Oh, you're Dominican?? Yo, u remember the Featherweight champion from DR, he was champ when Gamboa and Juanma was there. He had the WBC belt I think. What was his name?? U remember him??
The only name I can remember is Elio Rojas.
