I got to say this two are imo the two best fighters at cutting off the ring in the sport of boxing. This is a lost art in boxing and this two guys do it to perfection. They dont chase opponents straight foward the actually cut the eing off and trap them.
Floyd had an off night. Too much Fat Burger.
He wanted a ko too bad; perception then was Cotto was still chinny....
Floyd was throwing everything but the kitchen sink the first 4 rounds 4 and 5 punch combos brawling; but when it was time to go back into boxing mode as Cotto started to cut off the ring and stalk, Floyd had to readjust....
Cotto has a weird chin, one minute he taking Canelo best, next minute Ali is having him scuffle around the ring.....Too much scale games
Golovkin's ability to cut off the ring is overrated. He is just another overhyped fighter who looks good against average competition. If he grows a pair and fights Ward you will see him swinging at air and getting constantly turned around. He won't cut sh1t off.
And you'll see Ward wobble around and get KO'd vs Kovalev :)
I would say Cotto by a slight margin, only because he can cut the ring off without getting hit much, GGG walks you down but still gets hit a lot when guys do throw hands off the back foot.
Cotto though has cut the ring off against some better competition. Cotto loves fighting movers, he just cant fight pressure fighters, Cotto is the quintessential bully fighter.
This is why you will never see Cotto vs GGG, That fight would be a battle of who budges first and Cotto always wilts under pressure, he will go toe to toe with you for a bit but if he cant push you back or intimidate you he gets on his bike and gives in, Cotto likes guys who retreat, he doesn't like guys who come to bang.
Golovkin doesn't know how to cut the ring... He doesn't know how to punch... and he fought nobody...
In fact Golovkin is an illusion and I can understand why they don't want to fight him -- except for Ward, who actually likes illusions.
Cotto has cut the ring off against better movers. Golovkin is good at cutting off the ring but people don't want to admit the fact that his abilities have not been tested against good opposition.
And finally... Logic appears in this thread.
Cotto has cut the ring off against better movers. Golovkin is good at cutting off the ring but people don't want to admit the fact that his abilities have not been tested against good opposition.
This right here, but GGG is really good at it. I think what gives Cotto the advantage will be his ring IQ and how he will set you up.
GGG was following Moore Jr. around and was not as effective at cutting up the ring. Also, Cotto will circle you and not follow you and walk you to his trap.
...but I agree GGG is really good at it but I give Cotto the edge in this crucial ability.
Hard to say when GGG hasn't faced fighters of the calibre Cotto has, guys with good speed and elite footwork like Manny, Floyd and lower level like Judah and Quintana
GGG hasn't faced any slick guys with great defense and footwork
Cotto has cut the ring off against better movers. Golovkin is good at cutting off the ring but people don't want to admit the fact that his abilities have not been tested against good opposition.
I kinda agree here, let's see the so called boxing rebirth of Chavez Sr. cut off the ring against Lara or Andre Ward.
I'd say Kovalev cuts off the ring as good as anybody today, very versatile fighter.
kovalev is not really a pressure fighter, he prefers to dart in and out of range almost like a big, orthodox pacquiao
Golovkin is the best I've seen with a mid-range style, usually guys will rush and extend an arm around the opponent to pin them against the ropes. Golovkin's agressive footwork is amazing.
GGG at 160 is more effective at cutting off the ring because hes longer and he just hits harder. When he lands body shots he stops guys in their tracks.
for what 2 rounds? maidana did it almost nonstop so he must be better than cotto. in fact maybe he's the best ever at cutting the ring off?
Maidana is just more physical and awkward. The overhand right, the way he roughed Floyd up is what won hIm rounds.
At these weights Cotto is in there against taller lengthier guys, so it's a lot harder for him to cut off the ring. Ask yourself this, would Yuri Foreman or Trout be able to move around as freely against Golovkin? The answer is obviously no.

LOL Lara sucks compared to Golovkin.
