why is miami not a popular boxing venue ?

There's fights this weekend. Glen Johnson and Hairon Socarras are on the card.

Most people never even been to Miami but are quick to give a opinion. Miami has had a lot of great fights. Mostly upcomers though. Warrior Boxing promotions has a pretty good stable of fighters. Lots of good fighters down here. Venue is another issue. MGM and Madison Square and Staples Center are solid Venues to hold big fights. Despite home town advantages for a fighter. Wow, I'm floored. You can actually have a post that is well thought out and informative. Beats the hell out of your usual name calling and extremely stupid anti Floyd BS

I always wondered why big cities like Chicago and Atlanta did not host big boxing matches? I know Chicago has some fights but it is the third largest metropolitan area in the US. Atlanta I dont really remember any fights happening there and it is a big city.

^ miami sports fans do suck. too much to do in south beach. hell, miami heat games with lebron wouldn't have a full arena until mid 2nd quarter-half time. Yup, Miami there's too much to do, and people aren't hardcore fans. I remember going to the Lakers vs Heat game and it wasn't full until the 3rd period. Shame.

Because sports fans in Miami suck. I know that's not what people want to hear, but look at every sports teams attendance records not named the Dolphins. The Heat only when they were good, Marlins get no love, fans down here aren't very dedicated. Plus the boxing scene in Miami isn't that good either, especially at the amateur level.

Not trying to start anything but I remember hearing from some sports publication that Florida has the worst sports fans........seriously bro They are. Fair weather fans. They don't even appreciate the fact the Miami Heat and the Florida Marlins have brought them a combined 5 championships in 30-years. Where as the Cubs are O'for in 100 years yet Wrigley is sold out every night.

it's just not a sports town. the people in Miami only care about the Miami dolphins. the marlins won 2 titles in a 7 year span and their stadiums were still empty as an indians fan, this always made me happy.

Like several have mentioned, Miami is just a bad sports town in general. But, as far as the Cubans go, I don't see them getting behind their fighters in a fanatical way. Also, and I don't even know if this is true, they have a reputation for being very conservative with their money so maybe they aren't even interested in paying expensive tickets for the fights??
