We know they made money with Floyd vs Canelo (2.2M) buys and Floyd vs Manny (4.3M x 60% with hbo getting 40%?)
But they lost money with Guerrero, Maidana 1 & 2 and will lose heavily with Berto.
by paying him 32 million, while also paying his opponent, other expenses including advertising, venue, ect... there is more to this than meets the eye. for them to make 32 million on ppv numbers alone theyd have to clear more than 1 million buys.
they got him for advertising their station, they knew he was going to lose money. did his advertising work? hell no, but they chose to take the risk.
.... Floyd Mayweather has been able to generate 7m PPV buys for Showtime over his 5 fights so far .... from the looks of things, before even considering the take on the international rights sales of the fight/assorted programming, it looks like Showtime is doing just fine.
How have they taken huge losses?by paying him 32 million, while also paying his opponent, other expenses including advertising, venue, ect... there is more to this than meets the eye. for them to make 32 million on ppv numbers alone theyd have to clear more than 1 million buys.

since when did boxing fans start looking into stuff like this and caring so much... oh wait floyd is involved nevermind
Yeah man...Some boxing fans in this point of this era, the past few years or so are obsessed with who gets what numbers and who gets what cut of whatever slice of revenue. It is so annoying man, I wish these people cared about the fights rather than stupid factors such as this.
Seems to me it is something that casuals use to debate as they think it is a main point of the game.
I understand sometimes promotional issues can complicate matters with contracts, but fans arguing and trying to prove points by using numbers and percentages is another thing all together. Stupid.
It may have nothing to do with Floyd, but in regards to Haymon I need to point out the connection between CBS and Showtime.
shhhhhhhhhh.
They might hear you
Showtime were only showing fights involving haymon fighters.
Haymon took his fighters too regular tv. So showtime is **** out of luck.
No haymon. No top rank. No gbp
It has nothing too do with floyd

Obviously not a good sign. I see two possible interpretations. One is that they actually took significant losses with the Floyd deal and as a result is it coming out of Showtimes boxing budget. The second is the possibility that Les Moonves is simply busy diverting showtimes boxing resources to CBS (although possibly for the same reason).

:haha: Mayweather can fight whoever he wants at this stage of his career. Stephen Espinoza and showtime are pretty much powerless. Also they probably made their money back and more with Pacquiao-Mayweather
Showtime was just involved in the 2 most lucrative fights in the history of combat sports.
I would say they didn't lose anything by bringing floyd to showtime
If they really had "huge losses" why would they allow Floyd to take on Berto?

Its his last fight so they have no say He made money for them in 1 fight the rest were lost revenue since they're paying him 30 million
They haven't made decent fights in months now.

I don't know as I haven't seen all the numbers.
I think Showtime was making a big play going after the p4p guy as their flagship. In the mean time, HBO has been building up guys like GGG and Kovalev as well as putting on pretty good fights on a regular basis.
I don't know who has made more money, but I do know that HBO's boxing program is looking a lot healthier in the long term, even with Haymon trying to bring them down.
They tried to convince him to not retire and extend his contract.
What does that tell you?
of course they want to be part of floyd-pac 2, they know if he doesnt extend his contract he goes and makes the fight with hbo for more money...
I signed up for subscription during the TBE/SHO collaboration hoopla. Funny thing was TBE is not even on Showtime, he's on PPV. I assumed that SHO's earnings from PPVs were supposed to translate into more subscription-based fights. Months and 2 PPV fights later, regular fights were becoming rarer and rarer. I cancelled eventually. Waste of money waiting for nothing. I learned recently that Showtime boxing is no longer included in the Superchannel package. What the hell happened??
Obvious question is if they made money, where are the fights that subscribers expected them to make?
HBO has scaled down their budget and is offering fewer hours of programming since Herschman cam on. Did you cancel HBO?

Never once have seen a thread like this about any other fighter
Showtime had six fights to cover the $250m that was guaranteed to Floyd. Counting backwards from the PPV revenue, Floyd seemed to have needed to generate $550m-$600m in PPV revenue to get to the number (not sure how the math worked out, but the rumor around these parts was that Floyd needed to sell 6m PPVs to cover.
5 fights into the deal, Floyd Mayweather has already generated the equivalent of 7m PPV buys (Showtime's share off of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight amounted to 2.3m PPV buys). Beyond that, the final fight will likely generate no less than 700k PPV buys
Yes, Showtime made money on the Mayweather deal; they covered their complete downside risk on the Mayweather deal, and likely will end up putting $50m-$60m into their own pocket, nevermind the residual income that they picked up from people picking up Showtime with the Mayweather/Golden Boy move to Showtime.
end thread on this. good post.
