It seems Maravilla is done and that's to bad, i really thought he would of pulled the upset over GGG if he was in his usual form before he hurt his knee in the Chavez jr fight. I'd pick him in his prime to beat all @ 154-160 right now He produced spectacular fights IMO............I miss him already............
Do you consider him a ATG? HOF? Or just a good fighter?
BTW
Against May@154
Against GGG@160

Would of been my dream fights, do you think he could of pulled any of them off in his prime?
I rate it very high, for me he was one of the most entertaining champions in the ring, he brought it in every single fight, because he was always fighting against odds, his fights against Williams and Dzinziruk are memorable, he is a role model and his life story is a legend.
I'll always remember him.
what was memorable about dzinziruk? i remember he ducked pirog a beltholder in his own division who had fought on hbo before to fight dzinziruk an unknown 154 pounder.
and that is why he was one of the most entertaining boxers, he was fighting against bigger stronger opponents, but never knocked out.
Huh? Getting constantly knocked down against average fighters does not show you are exciting or that you are hard to KO. Do you realize how many small fighters never been knocked down, or hardly ever knocked down against bigger fighters? Martinez was chinny, not that he was fighting massive punchers who had a great size advantage over him.

Maravilla was one of my favorite boxers, not afraid of anyone. I think he would/could have beaten GGG a few years ago but just before the Chavez fight, it looked like he was starting to slip a bit due to injuries but the guy that beat Pavlik would have done a number on GGG imo.
I'd say he is a HOF talent, especially when you consider the age that he started boxing and the boxers that he beat.
From 2009-2014, Martinez was knocked down 8 times. For reference, Khan who is labeled a glass chin, has been knocked down 9 times in his entire career. In the same span(09-14) Khan was knocked down 4 times.

a few years down the road he'll be remembered for the brutal knockout of williams and that's about it. his only other good wins were pavlik and...hmm. i' don't really rank pavlik too high. his only good wins were the taylor fights.

I don't recall this fight being seriously considered till GGG beat Proska.
It didn't pick up till his US debut but he was ranked much better than the other guys he fought before Chavez (none of whom were tested in the US market anyway). GGG was the WBA champ at the time so there would have been some interest, especially when Dibella admitted that Barker wasn't a guy they were even looking to fight (weird they'd go to Barker but not GGG, who was the champ).
He could have also fought him after the Chavez win but fought Murray instead. I guess it was one of those situations where he was too dangerous with not enough money so it wasn't worth it for Martinez.
He was lineal champ but was never able to land that big name fight to pay for his retirement. That's why I have no issue with him picking Cotto over Golovkin.
A fight between the Martinez that fought Murray and Cotto vs GGG would have been terrible to watch in hindsight.
I agree with this.
Don't have a problem with him picking Cotto over Golovkin, but he could have fought GGG before Cotto. GGG was the champ since 2010 and was a top 10 MW by everyone (a lot had him top 5 too). After the Paul Williams win and before the Chavez fight, he fought Sergiy Dzinziruk (154 WBO champ but this was his first 160 fight), Darren Barker (who they said was like 8th on the depth chart) and Matthew Macklin (who was off a Sturm loss) instead of GGG.

I think Murray beat Martinez too but at the time, he was still technically the lineal champ and just came off a PPV win against Chavez so it would have still been a good fight to watch. Martinez could've rested a bit more too since he only fought once that year.

saying it doesn't mean much especially when he knew he would never fight him. he had the chance to fight him but he chose murray instead because he thought he would beat murray even with bad knees. that turned out to be false and he had to steal a decision. its too bad really. if ggg had beaten martinez then none of this cotto middleweight nonsense ever would have happened. just shows the ripple effect that ducking can have on the boxing landscape.
Well I doubt he actually didn't think he would win against Cotto. If he won, which I assume he believed he had a small chance to do, then I think he would have every intention to fight GGG.
I do agree he didn't want GGG after his Chavez win even though people were asking for it. Also agree with what you said about the efects on the lineal champ issue. GGG is the real MW champ though as most know it so it doesn't matter too much if he's not the lineal champ.
Murray beat a faded Martinez, IMO. He was already a deteriorated fighter.

Yea but you still gotta give him credit for saying he wants the fight and probably had intentions if he were to win against Cotto.

I remember people were asking for a GGG fight after the Chavez fight. GGG fought in US against Proksa 2 week before Martinez fought Chavez in Sept 2012 was GGG was a champ since like 2010. Martinez chose to fight Murray instead in Argentina.

Martinez was a shot fighter before Golovkin became relevant though. At that point his name and title was being sold to the highest bidder.

Very good career and a sure Hall of Famer but it's just a shame he peaked so late. Was my favourite fighter and I'm thankful for the great fights he gave us fans. I actually didn't think the Murray fight was such a robbery, Martinez won a lot of the rounds besides the KD ones.

he only said he would fight ggg right before the cotto fight(a fight he knew he would lose since he had no knees)
