Golovkin likes being active and building his momentum so he isn't just going to sit on his ass and wait for the Canelo/Cotto winner or Lee/Saunders winner. He is going to fight. The Way I see it there are 3 options:
1. Fight a second tier middleweight contender: This is the most likely option and also the one that will draw the most criticism. This would be like fighting Heiland or Johnson or maybe Eubank jr. In fairness, these guys are good and could be top 10 middleweights, but nobody knows who they are...the GGG haters will have a field day and the GGG fans will be dissapointed as well.
2. A gimmick fight: Bradley, Oscar, Mosley, Tyson lol...who knows. This is probably the worst option. It would draw extreme criticism as well, and endanger the livelihood of each opponent. The only positive is that it would be more publicity for GGG.
3. Try to find a tough guy at 168. This may be difficult but it may be good for Golovkin to try out the weight class. But the main guys at 168 are mostly tied up with title shots that they are not going to risk. Groves and DeGale are on course to fight each other, Gilberto Ramirez is lining up to fight the Abraham-Steiglitz winner. The Dirrell brothers are with Haymon, and Felix Storm has been avoiding Golovkin for almost a decade. However, maybe Rocky Fielding, Fedor Chudinov, or Caleb Smith could be made. Any of those 3 guys would be my choice...He might as well test out 168 while he waits for a middleweight to man up.
So which one of these options should GGG go for.
Please do not answer with Ward, Mayweather, Cotto, Lemieux, Canelo, Lara, Quillin, etc. These guys are either actively avoiding GGG, want more tune-ups first, or are hiding behind Al Haymon.
This is typical. Ward is the only name you can come up with and he and his trainer have both said that they need at least another fight before Golovkin. Abel Sanchez also said on a recent podcast that he spoke to roc nation representatives who informed him that Ward believes he should get A-Side money if they ever fight which is insane considering Golovkin is much more popular than Ward, both in the US and internationally....But this thread is about who Golovkin can possibly fight in September/October...and I tried to come up with some options but it is very difficult because of the ducking, politics, etc. Golovkin is an elite talent. Anyone that watches boxing knows that. Other fighters and their teams know that which is why they stay away from him. Does his management need to do a better job on getting him a big fight? YES, definitely. K2 has done a good job in building Golovkin's popularity but they need to deliver on a big fight or Golovkin should threaten to leave...despite the fact that they have a great relationship....But if you are one of those idiots that think Golovkin is a "hype job", then you are crazy. He's the real deal. This shouldn't even be argued.
Good post.
GGG hasn't proved me wrong.......he won't step up his comp unless it's against a natural ww/jmw(why would anyone of the smaller guys fight him when he brings nothing to the table as far as resume or money?)....is the reward worth the risk? yet ggg stans claim ww/jmw's are ducking him lmao. ward probably made more than ggg's last fight on fvcking BET ffs.......ggg's content with cleaning out arguably the worst division in boxing rather than dare to be great. he's approaching his mid 30's with a garbage resume for a so-called "p4p fighter".

I think GGG should fight the winner of Heiland/Johnson, instead of fighting both of them.
I'd have no problem with that other than they would have to fight each other next which would rule the winner out as an opponent for September. So that does not solve the current dilemma. He could fight the winner in Dec but still would need a fight for Sept.
What makes it even more difficult for GGG is that he is just about the only MW who fights more than twice per year. Makes it really tough to find decent opponents when they all would rather sit on their ass than fight.
Heiland is a solid opponent. Although i'dk if hbo would approve him since he isn't really known. Hopefully it's not tureno hes mediocre at best struggling against Curtis stevens

Thats dumb if you actually believe that.

doesn't matter who we want him to fight.....he only wants to fight tomatoe cans and bums unless he has a 20lbs advantage on them. don't expect this guy to fight anyone with a pulse anytime soon.

Both coming off KO losses, wouldn't like to see it. Korobov has a brain issue too.
There was some talk of Clottey, it would be interesting to see if Golovkin could stop him.
Korobov health issue is more of a technicality than anything from what I heard. NY won't license him, but it's not supposed to be any threat to his health.
Where did you hear Clottey?! That would be absolutely horrible to Golovkin's reputation. It was embarrassing enough to see Alvarez almost fight him.
Golovkin could get away with these kind of stay busy fights if he had 1 or 2 big names on his resume. But he doesn't, he won a vacant title and just filled into the #1 MW position more less by default. And at 33 his physical prime is now. Hopkin's career was bailed out by Trinidad. Golovkin's taking a risk he might never get to kill a monster like that.
Brain issue? any links???
I heard it was something like mineral deposits in the tissue. Rare and supposedly harmless disorder.

Clottey is @154, and he would get absolutely decimated.
The only fight I could see him taking at SMW would be against DeGale but I doubt DeGale would accept either.
Already posted the video. Tom Loeffler doesn't want the DeGale fight.
So hurry up and take your pick...

N'Dam was not stopped by Lemieux. It would be interesting to see if GGG could do what Lemieux and Quillin could not, and that is to knock him down and keep him down. I doubt that he would be ready to fight again by September.
Yes to you its a joke... Did you feel the same about GGG fighting Monroe Jr? Boxcino tournament winner doe.
I wasn't at all happy about Monroe, but he had a style that made the fight a little intriguing going in. Johnson & Heiland are a level below Monroe. Monroe was a blue-chip prospect in the amateurs and breezed his way past Bondorvous, Kopylenko, Adams, and Vera. That at least tells you he's levels better than those guys.
Johnson was not near as impressive vs Gavronski or Theran. He was caught and hurt bad vs Stevens. Heiland's taken losses vs other journeymen and the style he beat Macklin & Godoy with would mean sh*t against Golovkin. I rate Adama well above those two. He's atleast durable as f*ck and has a good jab and proven himself to be able to hang with guys like Geale, Karmazin, George and Davis.

GGG will fight another middleweight contender, whoever the best available choice may be. He will not pick a gimmick fight and definitely will not be changing weight division for a non PPV fight. Blame him or his management team all you want, but no management team out there would be able to do any better. Fighters like Cotto simply do not have the balls required to step in the ring and Lemieux may well be willing but he would have to break with Oscar to be able to get the fight. K2 cannot force anyone to fight him and neither can anyone else.
Ward is not ready and may never be, Froch is retiring instead of taking the fight. The only fight I could see him taking at SMW would be against DeGale but I doubt DeGale would accept either.
I would figure someone like Johnson or Heiland. At least those two will give it their best shot. I only hope that this time GGG listens to his critics and doesn't sit back or take a break during the fight and goes in the ring with the intention of ending the fight as soon as possible. It is obvious from the Monroe fight that even trying to show some vulnerabilities is not enough to draw in the 'brave' fighters out there so he may as well go all out this time.
