Golovkin's actually a central Asian fighter. Kazakh boxing program is pretty distinct from European. I believe HBO did a short segment about Vassily Jirov being trained by a guy who would lock him in a room with attack dogs. I wouldn't compare Lacy and GGG. Lacy didn't not have devastating power by any means, nor did he look all that intelligent in the ring. GGG packs some intelligence with his power in the way he shifts and cuts the ring off to deliver his power punches. Lacy was just a mess and for the most part I found his fights boring. GGG has been wrecking everyone in dominating ways in which Lacy was never known for, but he's also getting towards the tip of his prime years and needs to make moves soon.
