Cotto has fought the top fighters of his time and had some success, fair enough. But Canelo's biggest wins are against Austin Trout and James Kirkland, neither of whom are near top 10 P4P.
This fight isn't remotely on the level of Mayweather-Pacquiao.
This is a super fight IMHO.
Both guys deserve it.
My only problem with this fight is that it settles nothing. In the sense that both are not quite MW, not quite Jr MW, just somewhere in between. But sometimes fights are just fights, so ill take it.
The argument as to whether or not this is a "super" fight is nothing but semantics, and its silly.
If you did a poll of the top fights that people want to see right now, I'd bet dinner that Canelo-Cotto is the consensus #1 choice, and top 3 at the absolute worst.
nobody wants to see Floyd-Pac 2, or Floyd-Khan. And Klitschko-Wilder would have mild interest, but 95% of the casuals have never heard of Wilder. Die-hards want Cotto-GGG, but thats not happening at the moment, if ever.

And that fight lived up to everybodys expectations, right? C'mon now, people WANT and pay for FIGHTS! Not glorified sparring sessions where each man looks like nothing happened to them after the fight was over. They want ko's, or at least the fighters' going for KO's. They want action. They want a FIGHT!
Cotto and Canelo are 2 Big names in the sport, regardless of your opinion. They bring in fans and thats what it really comes down to. So is this a super fight of Pac/May levels, probably not and i doubt any other fight in our lifetime will ever be. But this IS a super fight. A popular mexican vs a very popular borikua for thee MW title of the world.
It's a mega fight, not a super fight here in the states. However, it's a super fight for Latinos. Wouldn't surprise me if over 50 million people watch the fight.
Consider people outside the boundaries of the 48 on the mainland...
Nah...
You know how tiring it gets explaining to people that as a PR we don't need a passport to travel to the US?
They don't know their own history, much less the relevance and accomplishments of other people.
Dunno how you can say this. Cotto and Canelo are both easily top 20 in the world, and could be argued all kinds of ways into the top 10. We're not talking about two bums here. Both fighters may have lost to Mayweather but everybody has lost to Mayweather.
Cowboys and Steelers are top NFL teams with large fan bases but just because they play each other doesn't make it the Super Bowl. It's a big game that will get a lot of viewers and bring a lot of excitement though.
A true Super Fight has two requirements:
1. Pound for pound relevance
2. Individual stardom of at least one of the 2 fighters
Cotto/Canelo fails to meet the first criteria. Neither guy is a top 5 or maybe even top 10 pound for pound fighter right now. But it definitely meets the 2nd criteria which is why it is a big fight that everybody is looking forward to.

Its my bday, drinking some knob creek infused with bacon, watching MLB draft (love theydoing this), and thinking about next superfight coming and YES canelo/cotto is it.
Also fury/Klit
I keep hearing about Canelo's improvements but I don't see it and I don't buy it.
He might only be 25 but with over 40 fights under his belt and a pro career spanning almost 10 years he's as good now as he'll ever be. He's plateaued and I don't see that changing. His stamina is awful for a championship level fighter. Even in his lop-sided win over Kirkland, Canelo was pushed against the ropes at times and allowed Kirkland to tee off on him. He doesn't have a weight class to fight in, choosing to fight at 155 for his last couple fights.
I'll confidently pick Cotto to beat him should the fight ever get made.

Mayweather-Pacquaio was on the same intensity level as a Friday Night Fights undercard or celebrity charity boxing event so that's not really much of an insult.
It won't be a financial superfight along the lines of May/Pac, that's pretty obvious, but it would still be a formidable PPV fight, and more importantly, it's just a badass fight.
It really has damn near a 0% chance to be boring.
Was he young? He certainly wasn't prime. Old may be a bit too much but still. Why do you stans always assume someone is hating because we don't put Cotto on a pedestal? We all know he's good but call him out on his crap, something majority of his fanboys lack.
:lol1: :lol1: your sig tho
The hate is real :lol1:
