It will take some time for a new 'PPV Star' to reach the top after Mayweather & Pacquiao retire, but who do you think will be the next boxing superstar?
If I was to make a prediction now, I would say Thurman, GGG potentially or Canelo. I'm just curious.
I don't want to see 'Boxing is dead now'. People have been saying this for hundreds of years and the sport always finds a new guy/new guys.
Khan is already the next PPV star, if he'd fought Floyd or Pac the viewing figures could have been well over 5 million, give or take a few million.
lol. Khan is not a PPV star past, present or future.
I hope there is no "PPV star" - only PPV fights.
When you have PPV stars, you end up with fights such as Manny v Algieri or Floyd v Guerrero as a PPV by default. Neither of which should be PPV.
So i would rather see PPV fights where it's a highly anticipated fight between 2 top fighters.
And that's what Top Rank will tell fighters who are interested in becoming PPV fighters.
As for "hitching" to Mayweather, let's be fair here, Mayweather and Pacquiao both became PPV stars after fighting DLH.
They were both fighting primarily in the sub-400k buy range pre-DLH (though the Pac-Marquez rematch did about 400k).
And in fact, Pacquiao had more PPV main events and more PPV buys in his career prior to DLH than Mayweather had prior to DLH.
Mayweathers pre-DLH PPV career was Gatti, Judah, Baldomir.
Pacquiao had three PPV fights with Morales, PPV fights with Barrera and Marquez, among others all before DLH.
Floyd use the shine of fighting ODLH, a fight that he basically took on the short end of a 75/25 to launch his "Money" Mayweather persona, continue it forward with the Hatton fight, and then cement his standing behind the stellar performance at Wrestlemania and his participation on Dancing with the Stars. By the time he came back to boxing, you could throw Floyd in with basically any fighter and he'd not only do massive business for that fight, the fight he fought, after the loss, became a somewhat viable star on their own, if they hadn't been before hand.
Pacquiao, even after getting the Golden Boy rub, pause, still needed to be in the ring with a name value opponent to draw his buys.

Beyond that, there was no extra push for the guys who ended up fighting Pacquiao (matchmaking reasons or otherwise)
Nice try...it was fighting ODLH, the same guy that put Floyd on the map.
Floyd fought De La Hoya, launching his name with that fight, but also the talking that he did on his own behalf for that fight, fought UK star Ricky Hatton, carrying his end of the promotion behind his mouth, and then hit the American mainstream audience, with with the Wrestlemania participation and his participation with Dancing with the Stars, with his charisma and talking leading the way.
Beating Oscar definitely helped (what version of Oscar actually showed up for the fight, after he weighed in at 145, is another question), but if not for the hype machine and the matchmaking (outside of Hatton, who in hindsight ended up having an apparently unproductive fight camp, the next five fights were all supposed to be cakewalks for Pacquiao against compromised fighters), Pacquiao would've never launched.
He can barely deliver an interview in English now, and this is nearly a decade after he started to bubble.
Manny Pacquiao became a PPV star behind ...careful matchmaking...Top Rank/HBO's media machine
Pacquiao smiles, goes into the ring, fights whatever Top Rank puts in front of him, and goes away.
And that's what Top Rank will tell fighters who are interested in becoming PPV fighters.

I say canelo
Not for long ... the blueprint on him is basic. simple movement and he doesn't know what to do. He would need to avoid a whole bunch of guys to stay winning. Monroe who fought GGG wouldve given him fits... Southpaw with movement who's a little bigger than Lara
I don't see anybody drawing like Mayweather or Pacquiao anytime soon but I do think Canleo will be that next PPV Draw because of his Mexican Fan Base. Canelo vs Cotto and Canelo vs GGG are the only PPV Worthy Events I can think of in boxing at the moment that doesn't include Mayweather of Pacquiao. Only concern about Canelo is that I'm not sure if he has the talent to maintain at the top of his Division without questionable decisions and being matched up carefully by Oscar
Wilder of course because he is a in shape American Heavyweight with Power so that instantly grabs the attention of Casuals in America.
Canelo- Yes
Crawford- No, not interesting enough and I dont think he'll fight the level of opposition to warrant PPV fights
GGG- B Side vs Canelo might be his one and only PPV fight.
Kovalev- Nope
Wilder- He might have a couple PPV fights but wont be a staple on PPV especially with Haymon trying to push for network ratings
The thread is meant for guys AFTER FLOYD and PAC. Hymen is killing his fighters and you have to realize that Hymen's entire model is moving in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF PPV's! So, yeah, anyone NOT A HYMEN BOXER stands the best chance of being a PPV boxer.
Manny Pacquiao became a PPV star behind careful matchmaking, Top Rank/HBO's media machine, hitching his cart to Floyd Mayweather Jr, the sport's unquestioned superstar, and never saying more than a handful of actual words.
Pacquiao smiles, goes into the ring, fights whatever Top Rank puts in front of him, and goes away. Being an utter cynic, when that started to go stale, Pacquiao found God, latched onto 4-5 scripted lines, and continued on as a cog in the machine.
Nice try...it was fighting ODLH, the same guy that put Floyd on the map.
It's Canelo, Crawford, GGG and Kovalev.
I would say Wilder but I think Hymen will try and match him lightly for some reason.
Canelo- Yes

Canelo. That's it. Point Blank. End of Discussion.
There might be a fight here and there just because of monetary reasons the fight would need to be on PPV. Just dont think anyone outside of Canelo can become a PPV attraction (meaning all or most of their fights will be on PPV).
