I made a thread a while back on who would win between Marvin Hagler and Bernard Hopkins. I now ask a similar question. Who would win? A middleweight fight between Bernard Hopkins and Thomas Hearns.
To close to call. People forget that Bernard could actually crack back then and he took Roy Jones the distance. If I had to pick I would give a slight edge to BHop because, like others have said, that was BHop's prime division and not Tommys. Would of been a hell of a fight though.
I never knew how much reach Hearns had until I decided to actually look. Always knew he was long, but f*cking 80? Jesus Christ..
I see why Mayweather ducked Williams.. That freaking Hearns build of 6ft+ and long ass range.
Unless Bhop worked off of counters, I see him having a really hard time..
Reach I believe is an overrated attribute in boxing, so few people are able to effectively utilise it!
Hearns had terrific jab and straight and used reach relatively well but was prone to being outfought.
Hopkins wouldn't work from the outside, I think he smothers Hearns and forces a dogfight! Hearns whiskers were brittle bit I don't think Hopkins stops him, but outworks him over 12/15!
Old school clinch rules would also allow Hopkins to work more from the clinch and take it to Hitman!

not to mention that williams would lean in and fight and make himself smaller / shorter. he also didn't punch like tommy hearns.
hopkins could concievably be outboxed, too. tommy had super fast hands and could keep an opponent turning when he needed to.
i think hopkins chance is to catch up to hearns and stop him. i think that's unlikely. hopkins was a strong puncher, but hearns' chin is underrated.

Thats preposterous
Hearns would put Bernard to sleep
That will not happen. B-Hop knows how to not get KO'd. I think this is a close fight for either man. Split decision either way.
Hearns takes it imo.

Looooooooooool. Show me a single fight where Williams actually fought tall, and maybe I'll take you seriously.
Hearns was too sharp and too good a boxer to be neutralised by Hopkins. Tommy would not slow down and stare at Hopkins trying to figure him out. He'd work constantly and plenty of shots would get through. If he could hit Benitez he could hit Hopkins.
Depends which era they fought. Today, refs tolerate so much of the cheap stuff Hopkins does that he might just be able to eek out a victory via pot shot and smother. In any kind of real boxing match though, Hearns would just rain hell on Hopkins in a way that he's never seen. Bernard wouldn't be able to work off Tommy's jab like he does other guys because of the speed, reach, and loaded right hand. On the other hand, Hearns real weakness was poor decision making while Hopkins is a king at taking guys out of their game. When it's all said and done though, Hearns batters Hopkins and takes the wide decision.
