Or was it a one hit wonder????Most of my casual fan friends walked away very displeased with the fight and fighters performance. I thought it was a bit strange the world stopped to see two 40 years old get in the ring together. I dont care who the 40 years old are, or their history together.
The next time people think of ordering a high profile PPV, will they think of Floyd/Manny hug fest?
And not remember Hagler/hearns?
THE LAST REAL IMPRESSION OF BOXING WAS FLOYD/MANNY. HOW CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT'S A GOD THING?
"In terms of casual interest I think it was one of the most damaging things to ever happen. Atleast for the Boxing PPV model."
ya...MOst people simply regret ordering it...
In terms of casual interest I think it was one of the most damaging things to ever happen. Atleast for the Boxing PPV model.
However, PBC has a good shot at changing that I think. They've been putting on great events and as long as quality Boxing is available on basic cable there will be an audience.
Plus, we got a very exciting fight the following Saturday that any casual would love, which did very good ratings and sold out a stadium.
People think this was the end of Boxing, but they're mistaken.
There are still plenty of fighters that can catch the eye of casuals.
It's the closure we needed and now we're finally moving into a new chapter, so of course it was good for the sport. Who the hell wanted to talk about 'what ifs' 10-30 years from now? That itself would have been far more damaging than anything else.
Yes it was good for boxing. It brought exposure to the sport and excitement.
There will be a rematch next Spring, we all know it. This rivalry couldn't be settled with one fight. So much money was made and so much money will be made in rematch.
Pacquiao's injury angle, Mayweather's trash talk, the new stadium on the strip, the much longer promotion time to actually promote the event will hype it up almost as big as this first fight. It will do well over 3 million buys and probably around 4. A year is a long time to forget about how much casual or non usual boxing fans didn't find the first fight great. Everybody will all still have hope the Manny can catch Floyd. And we learned in the first fight he can, can he actually catch him and finish him off, possibly.
Neither guy was impressive, they both were not very good offensively, pac had the few bigger moments and Floyd had many more smaller moments. They both looked overtrained, they both did the least amount to try and win. I think the rematch will be different. But Floyd fans should be clammering for a rematch as much as Pacquiao fans. Both guys disappointed their fan bases, pac was lacklustre offensively and Floyd fought scared and as safe as anyone has ever seen. Wasn't he supposed to be aggressive and attack Pacquiao and take him out, looked like neither guy was looking to take any risks.
"Only casual fans were dissapointed, they where proably expecting some brawl or some UFC type crap. Real boxing fans liked it. Mayweather did what mayweather always does"
I'm not a fan of Floyd or Manny at all(I like heavier weight classes.) the fight sucked. I didn't care who won. It was a baaad fight on the eyes and I found myself looking away from the TV screen at times...
Only casual fans were dissapointed, they where proably expecting some brawl or some UFC type crap. Real boxing fans liked it. Mayweather did what mayweather always does
Exactly.
And who gives a **** about casual fans?
nope it wasn't
/thread
this right here, when even real boxing fans were disappointed you know it sucked.
so basically all casuals hated it, most all boxing fans were disappointed. Only die hard mayweathers fans are happy af right now for obvious reasons.
but yeah for boxing was a very bad look, being hyped as one of the top fights ever in boxing history and thats how the fight turns out makes boxing look bad.
"It was terrible for the sport. This was one chance the sport had to shine and draw in new fans. It didn't. Most people I talked to locally who watched it were bored from the get-go. Had the fight been awesome since they have boxing on network TV again, I could see these same people tuning in for those future network fights and learning who the fighters are and getting into it.
Instead, they shook their heads and closed their eyes to boxing once again. Boxing has shot its last toe off I think. It isn't just the terrible fight. It's been a long time coming. The ban of the 15-rounder. The lax policies on rules from running to clinching. The amateurs warping the young minds of boxers to where they lean in with their heads. The charging money to see fights period. And of course, all the other disappointments over the years from Whitaker-Chavez to Trinidad-De La Hoya to De La Hoya-Mayweather to all the other fights that were not fights. Not to mention the copious number of meaningless belts and weight divisions. Watered down is a vast understatement and I can't wait for a lot of the money to dry up and see real changes. Obviously that is what it's going to take.
And sorry, folks. But they need to stop rigging the fights as well. Plenty of people are not fans because they think the fix is in and I believe they are right in many cases. De La Hoya-Hopkins was as real as a three-dollar bill. Any fight with low punch output and no real breathtaking shots can easily be a fix. Or last but least, the horrendous scoring. How can this be a legitimate sport when the majority of fans can believe one guy won and the other guy gets the decision? Why should people tune in for such a farce?"
HA!!I agree with most but the manny won part. The fight was hard to score I'll admit, manny didn't really convincingly win either. Kinda an odd fight actaully, could have very well been fixed to set up fight number two. Fight 2 would generate a large purse, not as large, but large
for all his love and compassion, when god got pissed he'd smite the crap out of people.
plagues, all kinds of stuff. epic and biblical.
It probably wasn't good for boxing, but for me I am just glad it's back to normal.
I like boxing as sort of a fringe sport.
The problem with May-Pac is that everybody thinks they are an expert on boxing.
a lot of stuff i heard from people was hard to listen to.
You can say that again!
It did more harm than good. I am glad it's over with and that we never have to see those two in the ring together again. Good riddance to the dog eater and ghetto thug.
"for all his love and compassion, when god got pissed he'd smite the crap out of people. "
hahah well according to both Floyd and Manny, every fight is a Godly affair. I agree with them
"I like boxing as sort of a fringe sport. "
I'm sort of in the same boat and would be bothered if boxing went mainstream. I think it's a classic case of the "grass is greener on the other side fallacy". People can criticize (with just cause) the current state of boxing, but a mainstream boxing could potentially have many more flaws. I think if tweaked in some areas as well as a new marketing plan, boxing could be a legit sport.
