Were any of you guys surprised by Floyd's use of the Philly shell in the fight on Saturday? For years I kept hearing how the shoulder roll doesn't work against southpaws and how Floyd would be in so much trouble against an awkward southpaw like Manny. People pointed to the Zab Judah fight as an example proving how Floyd's usual stance would not work against a better southpaw in Manny.
So were you guys surprised at how well Floyd implemented the philly shell and just how easily it worked against Manny's barrage of punches?
get over yourselves trying to convince yourself this was some masterpiece , floyd was on the ropes shelled terrified. his father was calling him out, the fight, teh crowd saw it. people are mad at manny because he stopped throwing punches and now we know why
floyd didnt have to hold the 2nd half of the fight cuz manny couldnt get off like he was before. trust me the holding was going to continue.
philly shell my ass, he didnt believe in it enough to not stall every chance he got
Or maybe cuz Pac was throwing and not landing even when Floyd would just lay back gloves up. Let it go...
Height makes a diff imo. From what I recall the orevious southpaws he fought were taller, the left hand came from closer to his head as opposed to slightly up so he naturally leans away from it. Zab is faster than manny..considerably so with his single shots and counters which is what was landing on Floyd. Pac was too predictable and not dynamic enough. He'd throw the left straight ahead.. All floyd had to do was turn a little more to his right and step aside...
He was in the stance but was not using the shell for defence...meaning he wasnt picking off shots with it.
Agreed. Thought he used it more for offensive posturing (bringing the jab upwards against the shorter fighter, shooting right hands from it). Just seemed more comfortable offensively in that stance.
When he was attacked, he went back to his high guard.

48-0 brother, deal with it

it worked on a 1 arm version of pacquiao
You mean he had his hands down while he was out of range. If you think he was in Manny's punching range whilst doing this, you're seriously deluded.
Floyd will often goad opponents to throw by putting his hands down whilst OUT of range but put his chin forward only to pull back and shoot his straight right hand counter. :banghead::smashfrea:stupid:
Pretty sure he did it in range.
Well yeah, i was exaggerating that he didn't use it much but he did actually fight with his hands down at some points which was surprising.
I did actually expect him to use the high guard more against a Southpaw, like most other people expected but that's why he's great. He knows more than we do.

I've only seen the fight once still, but how many punches did he roll off the shoulders?

Its the holding and a ref who doesn't take points away for holding not the Philly shell that saved him. Great defense is Mike Tyson slipping punches without holding and returing fire. Anyone can hold you just have to have a ref in your pocket
If Manny was more active...He would have not use it at all.....Manny knocked Floyd back to the ropes with that str8 left while in that stance. And anytime Manny threw and landed Floyd covered da fck up
If this was pre-Ko MAnny....That stance would have got Floyd hurt
And 2009 Manny would have had Floyd covering up alot IMO
I agree with several posters here. I attribute his victory to the jab, and his controlling of range, keeping Pacquiao at the end of the jab and not really letting him get off with his punches. He never let Pacquiao get into a rhythm. Very good fight to study. Although, I think the fight was more competitive than people think, but with Mayweather edging many of the rounds. But, by no means was it a schooling as some people say. Still had 8-4 Mayweather, but again some close rounds.
The shoulder roll defense was not the difference in the fight. And he was mixing it up with the peek-a-boo guard, as well. Wasn't really picking shots off with the philly shell, Pacquiao was never really in range to land his shots.
Think Pacquiao was okay, just think he didn't feint at all, which was critical to not let Floyd get into a rhythm. Needed to use the lead left more often, and maybe should have let Floyd lead a little more. Think Pacquiao was doing pretty good countering. Very cerebral fight from both, which benefitted Floyd.
Great win for Mayweather. Don't know if I believe the shoulder injury stuff. Would still be interested in the rematch, though. Thought the fight was actually pretty good, and second fight would just be a treat in terms of hype and suspense.
He used it occasionally I think to rest when on the ropes, knowing Pac was out of range, high guard in the center of the ring.
The Chop Chop fight is a prime example of it failing with a southpaw though.
I think when Floyd says every fight is important to him, that's what he means. . . You see mistakes early in his career, but you don't often see them again.
Nah.
I don't think it was the stance that made the biggest impact, it was his control of distance. Whether he was in the shell, hands down or looking for openings, he always had the distance judged perfectly.
He was right at the distance that allowed him to pop Pac with a jab or straight right while Pac had to leap to try and land and kept getting picked off. He was in the shell throughout, but the distance control basically allowed him to do as he pleased.

Yeah, I think its because he controls range and distance so well that he was able to use the philly shell and still be safe. Floyd has actually gotten better at fighting southpaws over the years. Even at his advanced age he is still improving. He may not be faster than he used to be but he's certainly smarter than he used to be.
I disagree 100%. Look at the fight again, he was in the Philly Shell stance 90% of the time. He had left hand covering his waist and his right hand by his chin.

Yes, I was actually surprised. I'm curious why he did but at the end of the day I can't say that it was a mistake. He didn't use it all the time though.
