Funny how things turned round, now the HW division has some of the more interesting potential match ups in the entire sport.
Wlad
Tyson Fury
Anthony Joshua
Deontay Wilder
Bryant Jennings
Mike Perez
David Haye
Joseph Parker
Povetkin
Mike Perez
Taishan Dong
Glazkov
Oleksandr Usyk
Pulev
Helenius
Szpilka
Hughie Fury
Seeing as the only interesting fights over the last decade involved the same two guys the division is really starting to heat up again.
Guys these days have better training regimes, know how much protein they need, use a variety of conditioning techniques such as weights and sprints, not the old fashioned long arse runs that are overrated, plus they're bigger these days.
Old schoolers are overrated.
Ok Mr Professor, how much of actual boxing training has changed since 1974?
You're telling me fighters didn't know what to eat, how much to eat and the importance of protein in the 1960s?
Fighters don't do long arse runs anymore? Do you even know the training regimens of modern day fighters, pro and amateur?
Fighters didn't lift weights back then?
How has sparring changed?
Is throwing a punch different now?
Do fighters use defensive tactics only devised in the 21st century?
You say fighters are bigger now...apart from a handful of heavyweights who are 6'4''+ what other fighters are bigger now? In fact, welterweights are smaller now compared to the guys who were 5'9'' - 6'1'' in the past. The two premier welters on the planet are currently 5'6'' and 5'8'', they would look like little children compared to Leonard and Hearns and Robinson.
Are featherweights now 6 feet tall?
Please answer those for me. Thanks prof!
Takam should be on this lits. He beat perez decisively IMO. And the kayo he took at teh hands of Povetkin is why i firmly believe, that Povetkin is the second best in the world. He also has a resume that looks as good as Wlads.
There has never really been anything wrong with the Heavyweight Division. The only reason the division is criticized for being weak is because Wlad is the champion.
I promise you if Deontay Wilder was to take over the division it would magically transform into one of the best divisions in the world and Deontay would be considered one of the best fighters in the world.

expand on that.

Time to stop the nostalgic fantasies and embrace a new, different looking division.
Ali and Fraizer were good but they were no match for the Klitschkos.
Just a better era, with better nutrition and training techniques. Get with the times.

It'll take another 10 years for the HW to recycle the garbage.. to be considered a great time in HW.
Sub- 147 is where its at. My favorite at the moment is 140 :boxing:
no, they didn't.
american casuals have no idea who deontay wilder is. wilder is a limited fighter without much experience. he does bring athleticism and power to a division that lacks it, but that shouldn'tt make him a star - and it hasn't.
and no, it hasn't
if you think this division of flabby, untalented HW is normal, that is on you.
many of the best HW in the 90's, seventies, were explosive, gifted athletes. most of them showed up in top shape, and remained active and sharp throughout their primes.
todays HW sit around and eat and wait for a phone call to get clobbered by wladimir klitschko. just look at his title fights in the past 5-10 years. if you think that those fighters are good, that is on you.

Really?
There are HWs today who are not flabby and untalented.
Other than Vlad,
Povetkin
Fury got in shape
Wilder
Glazkov
Jennings
Perez
Takam
Cunningham
Szpilka
Joshua
Parker
Helenius got in shape

Looking at that, I'd say Wlad, Fury, Wilder and possibly Povetkin are good...even then these guys aren't always fun to watch and don't have great, eye catching styles. Add to that the fact that none of these men will face each other and just get in line for Wlad, it lessens the interest in the division.
Even if the quality is mediocre, if the "best" guys were fighting each other, we'd get a very good group of matches. But it's not happening, unless you count guys like Fury and Chisora who are willing to fight just about anyone and travel.
The rest of those names are jokes and AJ is a very raw prospect.
it has always been good. it's just that not a lot of americans have been paying attention anymore cause of having no belt/champion. as soon as deontay wilder won a belt, everyone started talking about heavyweight being "reborn" hahahahahahaha.
