Yes, I know Haymon has signed many boxers. Reports have it at about 180.
OK. That's a good amount.
However, he has the PBC series now airing on NBC, CBS, Spike and now ABC/ESPN. PBC is replacing ESPN FNF.
How can he keep the quality up on matchups? Basic common sense, is that eventually the matchups will dry up. HBO isn't going anywhere. They're here to stay. Not sure about Showtime.
Top Rank surely will not work with Haymon. Roc Nation won't either. Not sure about GBP's current relationship with Haymon...But GBP, ODLH and HBO seemed to be focused on building a strong relationship with the Canelo signing. I don't see GBP working with Haymon much. They're clearly aiming on working with HBO long term.
Haymon has a 2 year deal with many of the networks. OK. Do you think the quality of matches will be sustainable?
I like his intentions. Boxing on prime time TV? Hell yea. This is great for boxing. But at the same time, there are some flaws in this business plan. The division amongst promoters and networks is a major hurdle.
I'm just doubtful PBC can be sustainable. ...Unless of course, they can sell the idea that prospects and up and comers are entertaining enough for prime time tv. I'm not so sure. They need quality names like a Thurman and Danny Garcia. They don't have enough of them.
Remember gais 1st ever fight on PBC involved a non haymon fighter!!
:rofl::rofl:
Sorry Dunny, I had to do it.
Yeah, I had Molina as a Goosen fighter. I didn't realize he went to Haymon as well. totally missed he let his managerial contract expire.
I think ten years ago when UFC was just catching its wind that's when the 'coldwar' was at its peak. Sooo stupid. By trying to limit the other promoters, people like al haymon have now limited himself.
I do agree that boxing is a business, and sometimes 'ducking' is done strategically. For instance, everyone wants and has wanted to see Stevenson Kovalev for years now. I believe the fight will happen. But if it happened when it was supposed to, then what? nobody would have cared about kovalev vs Hopkins or pascal. Beterbiev would still be years away from contention. The winner of that fight would have been fighting cans for a couple years anyway waiting for a challenger, and ruined the action in LHW division.
I think these guys are starting to realize that by not fighting each others fighters they are causing damage to the sport of boxing, and basically allowed the UFC to take over without a fight, and actually helped them get to the top by having their lame feuds instead of making fights. Now that theyre not making as much money they are realizing that they need to work together so they can all make money instead of petty nonsense. I think the cold war days are over.
I hear the bolded alot on this site, and i for one believe its a myth. Sans maybe 2-3 matchups, there are really not that many fights that are being avoided, and those that are "being avoided" is not what is holding the sport back per se. I wish it was always number 1 & 2 fighting in each division, but it does not happen like that all the time. So I just enjoy my favorite sport and let the fights play out in the ring.
I for one stop wanting to see certain fights (or let it bother me) since the first Manny/Floyd negotiations broke down. Now I watch the fights INSIDE THE RING and leave everything else to the people that control it.

They can't yet which is why they aren't. Andy Lee and James Degale are both going to be fighting on PBC shows.

I thought he was a goosen fighter. thanks for the correction.
Step away from This Forum and go talk to people in the NORMAL WORLD, most people are positive about this situation and look forward to seeing it grow. This forum is full of trolls now sadly, can't take anything serious here and many are a awful representation of the sport they claim to be a fan of. I recommend people to BoxingScene main page for boxing news but not the forum...too childish!
My point in saying this board always complaining is that all the people I know who are fans dont care who is behind getting more boxing on tv, as long as there is more. But people on here have to continue their agenda and not want this to succeed because it is done by someone they dont like (for whatever reason). It is childish. All the name calling if you dont agree with, and then all they gay references. Someone posted (or bumped) a thread from 2005. The conversation in that thread was so great, strictly boxing talk, debating, with no name calling.
PBC is a good thing..clearly. More exposure for the sport... and more fights for us.
I just have doubts and I'm anxious to see if they can put together great fights consistently... when bridges are burned with other big players like HBO/GBP/Top Rank/Roc.
Yes, PBC has replaced FNF. Reducing shows to 22 over 2 years should improve quality.
PBC has a chance with all this exposure. I'm just concerned about sustainability and their MARKETING plan.
Boxing has an "in" with all the major networks. This needs to be done right. If it fails, will boxing have this opportunity again?... That's why I raised concerns about their marketing. I hope with the Floyd-PAC fight being made, that all promotions companies can now work together at least OCCASIONALLY for the good of the sport.
If this fails, boxing will have many more opportunities. Boxing has a rich, storied history with names upon names of greats who will keep the name alive. Ali is all you need. And you have many more like Tyson, Sugar, Duran, ext.
UFC/MMA doesnt have that. It's only been around a little over 20 years.

boxers just need to be able to box other boxers without limitations about promotional contract issues. All the pro haymon guys are poo-ing on arum and gbp for their ways but haymon is doing it too. sure, it is the tried and true successful method but how do you change the game doing the same things. Im not saying he is wrong for that, im just saying its nothing different. It is within his rights to make his boxers look good, protect his assets, and not give anything to other promotional entities that he doesn't have to. But its the exact same things TR does. He is changing nothing, but he is giving us a ton more fights on free channels. Boxing is the same, we just get more of it.
He will put on decent fights
What haymon is doin is good for boxing
Funny how haymon is held to a different and much higher standard
It's getting tiresome now
So now the usual fnf standards have to be surpassed just because haymon is involved?
Just stfu and be happy
Class dismissed
Im not sure everyone wants it to work. This is one complaining board. We get a whole bunch more of boxing on tv and they are upset because it is because of a certain person. Then they complain about matchups, on paper, instead of watching the fight and finding a reason to complain after the fight is over. You dont know whats going to happen in a fight until the fight happens. Perfect example is Stevenson and i believe it was Fonfara. All this boxing we are getting should be a boxing fans dream come true.

I personally think, PBC is all over the place. They should've just stuck with 1 network. And built a regular monthly show on the same night every month.
A show that is predictable ,..where viewers can expect quality every time.
Too many networks all over the place will lead to confusion.
You make an excellent point.

great post. greenk coming!
Its like some posters only watch for the outcome. I guess its the sportscenter era.
Yea, getting the outlet to showcase boxing is great. Prime time tv slots,...weekend afternoon events. awesome.
I think as boxing fans...many of us are anxious and want this to work. I think it can,...it has huge potential. And like you said, they need good matchmaking. ..which is definitely key.

If you want to get people interested in following a sport, you give them quality matchups to watch. You give them well known names to follow. Not fighters you would have trouble finding even with an Internet search.
Then how did BAD succeed on HBO? those fighters were not well known. If you have evenly matched opponents and the fight is compelling, people will trust the TV show and watch whoever comes on, not just that specific fighter.
Options, yes...
... But Haymon doesn't give Lucas the Danny rematch and doesn't allow Khan his shot at Floyd... "options" you say...
That's why I'm a believer in ODLH. I believe he genuinely wants to put on the best fights possible. Matthysse-Provodnikov was made because it's guaranteed to be an action packed fight ...
Oscar wanted to see Floyd-PAC get made or at worst Floyd-Khan,..and wanted to see Cotto-Canelo.. He did his part and tried to make those fights happen.
BIDS! Belt organizations order match ups, it goes to a bid, he wins them and then can put it on his Platform like Dirrell vs DeGale
Also "Haymon Roster" seems to grow Weekly with them signing fighters, I'm sure more is coming once their current contracts run out.
Why are people assuming that he doesn't want to work with other Promoters when guys like Eddie Hearn, Tom Loeffler, Lou DiBella, Frank Warren are ALL SAYING OTHER WISE!
I really like the Spike TV commentators. Tarver and Hansen did a great job, Hansen has one of the best gigs on TV doing the redzone commentary so a lot of casuals will follow.
The whole ring entrances set up is terrible and Haymon is trying too hard to have the corporate squeaky clean image this is Boxing not a dog show.
The only way a Haymon fighter fights a non-fighter is if that fighter desperately needs the $$$ or its his biggest paydays. Fighters who are established and making $$$ in other networks don't need PBC which in the long run sucks.
Say goodbye to GGG-Quillin and Koleav-Stevenson. I won't be surprise if Quillin and Stevenson ask for $15 million to fight GGG and Koleav. I don't see HBO budging as well.
