I thought it was a good stoppage. Pascal was out on his feet and Kovalev had been having his way with him for several rounds. No need to have another Magomed situation.
Just re-watched it. Something I forgot about was after the 4th round Kovalev's corner told him to take his time...that he had him just where he wanted him. It's not really that Pascal rallied in the 5th & 6th as much as Kovalev just letting Pascal empty what reserve he had left and get his confidence up...only to finish him off. You could see by the last 30 seconds of the 7th it was coming. He pushed him down leaning on him in the 7th and then he was ready to end it in the 8th. When Pascal got hit with the 1st of the last 2 punches he made little effort to avoid it and took it on the chin...a right hook. When Kovalev got in the 2nd it was more than enough of what Luis Pabon needed to see. Really he was saved by the bell in the 4th. Had there been say 20 seconds more left in the round it was going to end. Pascal really never qualified.
You make some valid points here.

Although it would have been nice to see Pascal flat on canvas, it was a good call by the ref... Especially knowing how brutal a puncher Kovalev is. The ref might just have saved the career of Pascal the other night, and it is quite distasteful for Pascal the way he behaved arrogant and claimed it was a BS stoppage... he should just have acknowledged his clear defeat as a man. Pascal is an arrogant idiot.
if he would stop the fight there he should've stopped it at the beginning of 4th round.
either way kovalev was going to knock him out but the stoppage came in a very awkward timing.
it looked as though pabon was confused and didn't know what he was doing.
Pabon did a good job.

Thought it was a tad early, Pascal has a history of looking absolutely done and then miraculously surviving. But I have little doubt Kovalev would have stopped him sooner or later.
I don't see how he makes it out of the round to be honest.
Good stoppage... Pascal could have taken even more damage and could have been seriously hurt..
If the ref didn't stop it, that would have been fine, as pascal had comeback before, but I'm fine with the ref siding on the cautious side...
Come back from a beating like that before? When? Pascal was out on his feet.

Pascal was staggered for sure but he came back from a terrible beating in round 3 and shook Kov later in the fight.
Bottom line the ref got excited and ended it way way too soon. Pascal earned the benefit of the doubt.
how did he earn the benefit of the doubt? By doing the booty dew?
"do you agree wit the stoppage?
- no, pascal was done
- yes, pascal could have come back"
i guess we know who you were rooting for. lol.
to answer the question it wasnt a terrible stoppage, but i would have let it continue for sure. similar to the berto-lopez stoppage earlier in the week. considering how pascal handles adversity i would say this was a bit worse.

I just watched the fight again a second ago and it was a sound quality stoppage. If it weren't for the ropes Pascal would have been in the front row. He literally could not control his legs anymore. DAMN that ***** was hurt bad.
Kovalev takes the life out of you with those punches.
It's scary, it reminded me of the Cleverly fight, his eyes were dazed, he looked and felt woozy.
The man is a beast.
At first ,I thought it was a little premature, but now that I've rewatched the fight I think Pabon did Pascal a favour. Another right hand from Kovalev would've probably knocked him out cold.
Good fight nonetheless.
I came to this conclusion when I rewatched it too. I still wanted to see Pascal taste the canvas, but it would've probably taken too many shots to do that. He was already out on his feet.

Good post. I agree.
