Ward and Cotto are great fighters and Champions (when ward fights), but I can't see how Jay Z can make money off them with what they are allegedly paying them. Maybe there is some great small print in their contracts?
Does anyone have an idea what fights they can make that will do well enough to cover the guarantees or are RN taking a loss to try and get a really Good TV deal?
They're doing anything they can after being rejected by a bunch of other fighters and promoters. Just throwing money at grossly overpaid semi-retired fighters to get a foot in the door. Hobby business of a rapper.
Its hard to take a 40+ year old with a professional nickname seriously.

Advertising revenue is huge, the bigger the star/show, the more money from adverts
Jay Z said his aim was to build his fighters into a brand
It's also possible that Rocnation could be looking to offset tax payments as expenses
Ward & Cotto could be company assets, fighters are essential for a boxing promotional company.
Purchased as assets through the company could result in claimable expenses for RN
I really don't understand how RN can succeed. I guess I understand getting some big boxers and putting on some cards that lose money hoping more will come and eventually the tides will turn, but while I feel boxing is about to boom, I also feel it's the worst possible time to enter into it. Cotto and Ward are great fighters, but I don't feel Jay will be able to get fights with Haymon or Arum fighters for them. So who does that leave? I'm really just going off the fact that Broner was offered like what? 40 mill for 5 years? I can't see Cotto getting a worse deal if they're willing to offer that to Broner, especially if Cotto turned down 10 mill for a fight with Cotto. I could understand more if Jay signed some decent prospects and started small scale and hoped to build up, but going balls in just seems like a bad idea
Arum made a damn good point (for once) RN has burned bridges with Haymon AND Arum. So who are their fighters going to face?
What im thinking.....ROC NAtion will die off and lose alot of fcking money.....Boxing World is not easy to just jump into just cuz you have money
I have seen this before....
People with big money throw cash in the fight game hoping to become a player, but nearly all fail in less than 3 years...
Remember 50 cent, wcw, affliction, elite xc, and countless others over the years..
Paying huge money to jumpstart is not a solid move
My thoughts exactly.

Haymon also relied primarily on the TV money out of HBO and SHO.
Haymon still hasn't developed many fighters that can actually sell many tickets or do much of a live gate...and the talk of the sluggish tickets sales for this weekend's card is just another example of it.
Danny Garcia sells out in the Barclays center. Broner can put buts in seats. Hell Lamont Peterson had 9000 fans live in DC.
Jay has some serious connections in the entertainment business, he's a very smart business man so he knows what he's doing.
I feel like boxing is on the brink of exploding in the USA once again. Jay knows there is money to be made in boxing, all sorts of ways to promote his fighters to the masses.

Idk why arums so butthurt about losing cotto when they didn't even have a contract. What did he think was gonna happen with a fight by fight basis deal
Cotto could just be a "loss leader". That is, the demographic and viewers that he could bring into his fights/appearances/products, even if they don't make money, could lead to a lot of money in other parts of the organization.
According to Wikipedia, "Roc Nation is a full-service entertainment company, inclusive of artist management, music publishing, touring, merchandising, film, television and an independent record label".
They have a long term deal with Live Nation, which owns TICKETMASTER. The business of boxing is really very similar to the business of organizing events and concerts. This is their core competence. Roc Nation may be confident that this core competence can be transferred to boxing and other sports.
Basically, boxing would just be part of a bigger portfolio of businesses that are organized around the core competence of big event organization. The boxing audience can be sold concerts, albums, movies, etc. Cotto could bring in the Puerto Rican and Latino audiences which would then buy albums and watch concerts of Latino bands and singers.
A loss in a business division called "Miguel Cotto" could be a gain overall for the entire corporate entity. When you go to a grocery because Gala apples are half off, the grocery might lose money on that particular item, but while in the store you could find yourself buying $40 of items that aren't on sale like toilet paper, beer, meat, etc.
When it comes to diversified companies like Roc Nation, you have to look at the big picture.
So Cotto is going to make some latin dance records to help make up for the loses they take on the boxing side.
Yeah but you need an infrastructure in boxing. Plenty of big-shots have wandered into the sport throughout its history and naively assumed they could be players too. Not without the network deals, the stable, and the relationships with managers and other promoters you can't.
Even Haymon couldn't have done what he's done without piggy-backing on the GBP machine. That gave him a position from where he could build. Walking into the sport making noise and waving your wallet around is no substitute.

You wonder what kind of offer he'd get from Canelo given the way those negotiations ended and now with the bad blood with Top Rank is this public, given the already existing beef with Haymon.
Will be interesting to watch...
