I was listening to Max on his radio show today while driving and he was talking about how Pac-Floyd is the biggest Non-Heavyweight fight of all times.
In terms of overall impact and attention.
He got
1-Louis vs Schmeling II -World stopped moving for this fight.
2-Ali-Frazier I-The United States stopped moving for this fight. Bigger than any super bowl ever was. Incredible tension and the entire country didn't sleep that night.
3-PACQUAIO-FLOYD
4-Ali-Foreman
5-Tyson-Spinks
6-Tyson-Lewis
7-Leonard-Hagler
8-Leonard-Hearns
Those fights he ranked based on the overall attention and focus they had at the time.
Seems like Maxie forgot Johnson vs Jeffries.......but yeah, it would have been big. The stupidity of it all astounds me and bespeaks how far the sport has gone to destroy itself with inherent greed and ego.
Johnson / Jeffries and probably Gans / Nelson 1 as well.
My vote goes with the two undefeated heavyweights, one of them being the biggest name in sports history. That's the biggest fight of all time.
Tyson - Spinks ?
Pac - Floyd WOULD of been huge.
Now it feels like Leonard - Duran 3. Both are past prime and i think Floyd will be a bigger favourite now than ever before imo.
After Pac KO'd Hatton, even non-boxing fans in the uk were getting excited about Pac - Floyd. Now, no one cares.
I have to agree with Max. Louis-Schmeling 2 has got to be the top. Right on the cusp of WW2, USA vs. Nazi Germany (Schmeling wasn't a Nazi, but propaganda is a *****), Louis seeking redemption for his only defeat at the time. Documentaries that I've seen and articles that I've read make it sound like Max had it right, the world stopped to see this one.
Correct. It was a dress rehearsal for world war 2. The fact is that the world paused when they climbed into the ring. Everyone knew it was happening from children to grand mothers from all walks of life. Everyone cared about that fight. Ali - Frasier and Ali - Foreman were similar.
Yes the Mayweather - Packman fight will shatter $ records but the world won't pause and hold its breath.
I was just reading about Louis Schemling 2. When the President of the United States is banking on your victory trust me it becomes bigger than the sport.

I'm not sure Lewis-Tyson was bigger than Holyfield-Tyson II.
chavez vs whitaker was pretty big.
no mention of DLH vs tito?
Cant believe a fight between these two at non prime is that big. purely The Island hype. No one else is as high on manny, maybe the anime crowd lol.
especially after manny got KTFO by his daddy Marquez? no way should this be that high on the list.

Personally I don't know if one can truly quantify the impact of events in which they did not actively live thru or have direct contact with...
That being said I have no idea of the TRUE effects the Louis - Schmeling fights had on society as a whole...My guess is that with everything I have read & seen its impact socially & athletically was unprecedented at the time and remains so today...
Theres no doubt that May/Pac generates crazy numbers & smashes all kind of records ppv, gate ect...But I think in order for it to go down as the BIGGEST fight ever the action in the ring needs to match or atleast approach the hype & I don't see that happening...
To this day I will never forget the tension and anticipation leading up to the Holmes - Cooney fight...I know that it did not have the overall impact that some others had...But for sheer emotion I haven't experienced anything like it & I was just a young buck at the time...
It may not benefit the most, but it certainly benefits more, because, it actually exists today.
Saying no boxer is in the top ten doesn't change the point. Social media makes this fight better than it would be without it.
Wth? In what way? Because it gets promoted more? That doesn't mean squat. Castillo Corrales was still the best fight I've ever seen, and that was on regular showtime, with less than 6,000 people in attendance. Maybe you're talking about the hype for the fight, but that doesn't make a fight better. Its overhyped fights that have actually pushed people away from boxing after they expect so much and get so little from what they were promised.
Louis vs Schmeling II was 35 years before Max was born and Ali vs Fraizer happened when he was 2
I think Pacquiao vs Floyd would be bigger than both. New digital era, more international, and more than 5 years of hype and anticipation
:Thinkingo
Its not. Especially when its about 5 years after the time when they both would have been at their absolute best.

This is a huge fight but Max is right. This fight isn't bigger than Ali-Frazier. With all due respect to your Country, it's not China or South Korea. It's the Philippines. It doesn't have the economical impact of a China or a United States. Every single person in the Philippines can watch this fight and it won't make it 'bigger' than Ali-Frazier.
Ali-Frazier literally had the entire nation out on the streets. We might not have been alive but there is a thing call 'video'. We see the crowds and we see the entire United States stop. We see the White House stop for that fight. We see everyone stop for that fight because it was about more than just a fight.
Half the United States live the ideal of Ali, the other half Frazier. Due to the war and the riots/parades. It was a fight about morality and about which side was 'right'. It was a cultural fight.
Floyd-Pac might be a 'cultural' fight in the Philippines but it's not a cultural fight by any means in the United States.
Max is talking about the USA. And there is no way in HELL Floyd-Pac will ever reach Ali-Frazier levels in the United States.
No Mundine v Green ??]
You all are wrong.
Top 5 are as follows and anyone who disagrees "dont' know sh1t about boxing"!
1. Butterbean - Holmes
2. Chavez Jr. - Rios II
3. Bowe - Pukall
4. Lewis - McCall (also know as the Lewis versus Weepy)
5. Burton - Augustus I (also known as Burton & Kelley versus Augustus)
Just keeping it real!
:boxing:
The fight will break $ records but will not gain the attention of the general public like some of the big fights a few decades ago because boxing was mainstream back then. Today boxing generates more cash (business model has changed) but it's not mainstream.
I think Max has this fight too far up the list.
