Pacquiao: 2 IMPORTANT DATES.
Prior to a few days ago I had a fair understanding of Pacquiao's imposed deadline of January 31, 2015 for the fight to be signed. The reason the deadline made sense to me was because I had a general understanding of Pacquiao's timeline. What I mean is this: Mayweather has a predictable fight timeline - May and September. Pacquiao has a similar one, April and November.
So, taking April as the alternative fight month for Pacquiao should the Mayweather fight not happen, it totally makes sense to have the Jan 31 deadline. That way, a mid to late April fight can be organized, giving Pacquiao and his opponent an 8 week training camp. This seems fair and substantiates the current deadline.
BUT....
Now we hear that should the Mayweather fight fall through, Pacquiao is looking to fight May 30, 2015 against a yet unnamed opponent (though speculation has the frontrunner as Kahn). So, assuming an 8 week training camp, and approximately two weeks of Promotional Touring, we're looking at 10 weeks of necessary time before the end of may.
From 1/31/15 to 5/30/15, that's 17 weeks. Now bear with me here, folks, here's my point.
17 weeks is ample time for training and promotion. More than necessary, so I say this: two things are necessary to help keep the superfight alive
1) Communication of ongoing progress of negotiations to the Pacquiao camp, Arum, associates, etc. Pacquiao's side, in other words.
and
2) An understanding that if progression is ongoing, Pacquiao is willing to forego the 1/31 deadline as there is still time to negotiate before he absolutely has to move on.
Now I know 10 weeks is an absolute minimum, so make it 13 weeks. That still gives an additional 4 weeks (post current 1/31 deadline) for the superfight to be finalized BEFORE Pacquiao has to move on.
So ultimately there will need to be continued understanding between both sides to keep this fight in the clear. Right now, it feels like the clock is ticking due to silence from one side, and a strong stance on a deadline by another side. And for me, quite frankly, knowing the timeframe for Pacquiao's 'Plan B' I have to feel that again both camps would be to blame for this not happening AGAIN. Am I wrong for suggesting this?
