anybody know did any of these great fighters took vitamins of any kind to get an edge or was it old school
eat right train hard, rest repeat
They were probably on drugs, like Meth or some type of drug like cocaine.
I know Ali was given some type of enhancement injections in his later career, some doctor injected him before the Holmes fight to get his energy levels up.
It was in a documentary on espn 30 30 or something they talked about the doctor giving Ali some injections because his energy was so low, but never said it was steroids.
Ken Norton was rumored to be on the juice he was good friends with Lyle Alzado.
Back in the golden age they had NO drug testing and many fighters were using something because it wasn't illegal.
Vit. B12 and E was used a lot years ago. I used to give my fighters a B12 shot 48 hours in front of the bell and I used it when I fought years before that.
Other than that diets were strictly kept intact and hydrating was controlled as scale time got closer. Everyone is different and what may work for one doesn't work well for another. Most fighters who are full time fighters know their bodies very very well.

I'm sure they all tried out a few things here and there back then. Highly organised and systematic doping didn't exist to the same degree though. Specially tailored substances for athletes were rare if they existed at all. The same results wouldn't have been guaranteed that are guaranteed nowadays, so there probably would have been less incentive to dabble in that stuff than there is now.

I'm curious as to why you keep talking about supplements. This isn't the first thread I've seen you make on supplements
It was in the 30 for 30 Ali-Holmes documentary. They said it was probably one of the reasons he was so gassed and sluggish in the fight. Honestly though it could just be some rumor they put in the doc to make Ali look better and make the story a little more interesting. He was apparently specifically taking it for weight loss
He was gassed cause he was old and shot and had parkinsons syptoms by that point.... but yeah the thyroid pills didnt help.

Ali took thyroid medication for the Holmes fight to loose weight because he was old, shot and fat at that point. Not really much of a PED, it weakens you, he lost a lot of weight but was obviously shot.
That's a very strange strategy since being hyperthyroid causes muscular degeneration just as much as fat loss. I definitely wouldn't call it a "performance enhancer". Unless he was hypothyroid to begin with and taking it for medical compensation.

Ali took thyroid pills when he fought Holmes to lose weight. I don't know if it was illegal or not.

Roids have been around since the 30's.................
And it's well known ALi was shoving whatever pill he was told to in his mouth
well the thread title should of just said drugs instead of supplements.
Protein shakes, creatine, fat burners are "supplements"
supplements didn't exist back then.
