Could a prime Sergio Martinez have beat GGG?

Martinez is being hugely underrated on this thread. I would pick GGG to beat a prime Martinez but it would be competitive for as long as it lasts.

I can see two endings. Prime Martinez outboxes him en route to a competitive decision or gets caught late after being ahead. Either way, I do not think Prime Sergio is a walk in the park for GGG Exactly what I was thinking.

We don't know what Golovkin's ceiling is but this current version is what will be used and the conclusion is nah. Golovkin is a efficient maniacal stalker who would take some of those counter lefts but he will wear Martinez down with constant pressure eventually he'll have to stand his ground what he can dish out won't equal what he'll take.

I truly believe prime Martinez outboxes GGG. Sharp countering and lots of movement would be the key.

Looks like he beat him in the hypothetical ring. Might as well tack on a loss to his record

Please don't turn this thread into another "Lets pretend Cotto got an epic win" propaganda piece. That fight was a flop. Martinez couldn't even train and just showed up for retirement money. Lets just put it to rest and focus on Cotto's real victories. But Cotto fans love to do that!! I wouldn't be surprised if Cotto fans rate that win as one of the greatest of his career, it'd be a real shame. Chavez Jr ****ed up potentially great fights (Sergio vs Cotto, Sergio vs GGG) with his 12th round rally. Also a shame.

What was so different about him? His opponents are what made him look so good. He's always had that same style. I was debating this with so local russian dude's I know and they said the prime martinez would of got iced within 8 rds.............what do you guys say? obviously all these former soviets are gonna nut hug GGG fact is, the Martinez that made mince meat of the likes of Williams, Pavlik, Jr and co would have had a great night against GGG. Martinez would have popped and moved, landed a few hard counters every now and then to keep GGG honest and rinsed/repeat for 12 rounds. GGGs power should not be forgotten but Martinez has heart, he'd get up and carry on. I can't see him being trouble until late and even then GGG only has a punchers chance.

Even after he made adjutments, Cotto easily adapted. Pavlik was starting to adjust in the middle rounds, he's just too slow. Martinez was using his athleticism and speed to overwhelm him. Martinez movement and speed would get him a decision against GGG in his prime.

Golovkin would KO Martinez... That hands down/lateral movement style worked well against Pavlikwho would slowly stalk his opponents and let them disengage whenever they wanted... But it would be suicide vs Golovkin who stays on people like glue when he's attacking.

He can't plant or put any force on his knee which took all his power, ruined his balance and his movement. He isn't even allowed to spar because of how weak his knee is; if your knee is too damaged to spar, how is it alright to fight? The man is a complete shell of himself and should be retired.

Unless Sergio can actually hurt GGG though, he's going to find himself in situations eventually that he can't slip and slide out of. Martinez would win his fair share of rounds, but I think he inevitably gets hurt and finished as Golovkin starts to corner him. Golovkin's jab is a key weapon for him here. It's makes him a problem for boxers that might otherwise expect to be too slippery for him.

GGG wins via KO! Sergio has no power at 160 and he'll run but "he can't hide"! Sergio was athletic but not that high skilled talent, once his athleticism was gone he had no skill to stand and fight. A junior middle stopped him easily GGG would KO him easily. Most boxers with movement eventually must slow down and use techniques such as stepping and working in short combinations. Everyone saw how Sergio adjusted once his movement was gone, he got stopped by a light punching 159lb super welter.! Ray.

Also, Martinez power was overrated. Outside of that perfect shot that Paul Williams walked into........he is a solid puncher at best. Martinez has stamina issues and also struggles with pressure fighters. Golovkin TKO Martinez (any version) within 8 rounds. 100% agree. Sergio was lucky to fight the version of Kelly Pavlik that he did, and Pavlik was winning the fight before he gassed. I still can't figure out how Martinez scored a KO over Cintron, it wrongly overruled, and somehow Cintron comes back and evens up the fight? And for all his speed & power, look how he fought Darren Barker. Imagine how long he would last if his fight with Golovkin went that route, as GGG would be cutting off the ring and taking away Martinez's space. Sergio's legs would be taxed as he'd constantly be on the run. Sergio likes to implement feints to create hesitation in his opponents before he attacks. Golovkin punches through feints. There's a reason Martinez fought unknown (to US tv) fighters like Dzinzurik, Macklin, Barker, and Murray rather than a fellow title holder in Pirog who had a KO win over an American fighter on HBO and who was constantly calling him out.
