Good fighter. Overrated though.

He was nothing special. He could hit hard and brought the heat, but he always looked sloppy to me. He'd beat the likes of Rios, and would stop Khan, but someone like Garcia would beat him; I also wouldn't bet on him beating Broner.

His father? Lmao! When Valero first hit the so cal gyms Doug was the one man hype train. I haven't seen any writer hype someone so much since then. He had people thinking this was the next coming of Ray Robinson. I remember I couldn't wait to see Valero's HBO debut at Gotham Hall then the NYAC revokes his license after they found that plate in his head! I was so bummed. Doug would have given some Floydies and *******s a run for their money the way he would go on about Valero. Anyway, he used to get so much crap about it people started calling Valero his "son" and Doug took it pretty well - it was all tongue in cheek, but pretty funny.

I was a big Valero fan I thought he was on his path to greatness. It's no coincidence that every trainer he worked with praised him as one of the hardest workers, heaviest handed and just overall being a beast. Every sparring partner still praises him as being deceitfully good and for being the hardest hitter they've ever faced. I think those people know a lot more than the average joe watching his fights. Supposedly the reason he was a sloppy brawler was because he would get a bonus for a 1st rd KO in Japan.

Man I was excited for this guy, don't know who he would have beat but it would have been fun to watch him try. He did always look kinda stiff and awkward, but who knows what could've happened if the right trainer got a hold of him.

i think he was a beast, he was a bigger puncher than pacquiao for sure, im not saying hed win against him but it wouldve been interesting. he wouldve continued rising up in weight imagine him against the provos and garcias of the world, he was never in trouble for the most part of his short career and most of them by round 1 KO. but really we wont know for sure because he was never in serious trouble in the ring, i think the toughest competitions would just bring the best out of him. i personally think, he wouldve done better against marquez than pacquiao did.

The last days of his life were really crazy. I still remember the BoxingScene headlines. He broker his wife's ribs a couple weeks before the last days, she said she tripped down the stairs. "Valero stabs wife to death" "Valero arrested at hotel, says he killed wife" "Valero jailed" "Valero commits suicide in cell" He hung himself with his jeans, with a photo of his kids lodged in his mouth. This sport leaves many victims. Man I remember when that happened too. It was crazy around here. Noone could believe it, then sure enough there were the photos of him being arrested. A day or so later he killed himself. It was kinda surreal. He was definitely gunning for Pac at the time and I believe it would have been quite the fight. Valero was good (scary power) and at the time Pac was in beast mode so not sure how it would have gone. Probably would have been one for the ages, but outside issues derailed Valero's life. I feel bad for his wife. Just a tragic story.

He had a huge cut in one fight and fought on. Also when the fight would go some rounds he had skills, he wasn't only a power puncher. Such a waste

He looked like an absolute beast against DeMarco. However, when I went back and looked at some of his earlier fights he looked pretty ordinary. It's hard to tell but it looked like he was on his way to being a star. Exactly. I was really impressed with his performance against DeMarco but in retrospect DeMarco wasn't any great shakes. And even in that performance I thought his D suffered a bit from stiffness. I think we would had a good run but would've struggled to crack the elite.

I dont think he was as good as everyone is making him out to be but KO artist always get a ton of praise in boxing no matter who they are stopping. The Oscar black eye stuff means nothing. That was before the Pac fight and we all saw how Oscar performed. Damn near anyone wouldve given him hell at that point. To me the stuff about him is more meaningful outside of the ring. Alot of mystery surrounds his death. Was he an abusive mad man that battered his wife, killed her, and then committed suicide or was he the victim of a country who stalked him, wanted to kidnap/kill him for his fame, and was he instead murdered in prison like some suggest. Hard to hang yourself with pants. Also, if he really was the bad guy, was it all due to his brain injury from the motocycle accident like some NFL players snapping after concussions It all just seemed weird. I'm not sure how good he really was or how good he could've been, but he was a very intimidating fighter, he had a genuinely psychotic look in his eye that used to send shivers down my spine when I watched him fight, he looked like a killer and indeed he was! From a fight fans perspective his death was sad, however the world in general is better off without scum like him.
