At glance..
He has a great resume to be so young.
Wins over
Shane Mosley
Eris Lara
Austin Trout
Angulo
And got a draw on one score card against Floyd Mayweather
On the other hand
All of his wins are generally tainted
Mosley was old
Some believe he lost against Trout, LARA
Angulo, not sure
How do you rank his resume?
I thought Canelo was overrated and not worth the hype for so long. Especially when he f#was fighting much smaller guys in Matty Hatton and so on but then came the Trout fight, close enough to be a draw but Canelo showed a spark in that. Then of course Mayweather and it was too early for the Mexican.
SInce then, he has fought two impressive fighters, yes Angulo was close to being done but he was still regarded as a vicious puncher and Canelo tore him apart. With Lara, the fight was close at first but as it got tougher and the championship rounds got closer, Canelo was clearly the guy with the dog in him. He was willing to stand and trade, to take it to the streets whereas Lara just wanted to survive. That fight, no matter how you scored it, showed Canelo has the will to be great.
If Canelo can add Cotto to his list of wins, he will be one of the most impressive 24 year olds I've seen in boxing for many years.
The hate for Canelo is unreal. Btw, he whipped Lara. You dont win fights with that small of punch output, Trout was close. Trout just landed a jab and got put down and seriously hurt. They were competitive fights with top 5 contenders in his division and that makes him a hype job? He lost to Mayweather, no way around that but he lost tho this era's best fighter. He's gonna beat Cotto too.You are a moron, he whooped angulo but loss to Lara, although am happy about the Cuban not getting the nod, the best and cleanest punches of the fight were landed by EL, ginger land less and he was credited with the ones that hit arms and elbows, get the facts straight...

It's decent for his age, and he's fighting better opposition as time goes on.
Trout and Lara were good wins..and he's got a fight with Cotto on the horizon.
IMO it won't be long until he moves up in weight, and the fact he's the kind of fighter who doesn't duck anyone..there are plenty of big fights to come.
At this stage, and at his age, i think his resume is good enough. It wasn't so long ago he was criticized for his opposition, but he's changed that view IMO with his last handful of fights.
Bigger things to come for him IMO, i see him being involved in plenty of big fights in the upcoming years.
Best win is against Lara,
A 24 year old had Lara running to the point that Lara was not even throwing, there were times when Lara literally turned around with his BACK TOWARDS CANELO, and freaken ran the opposite way. It was humiliating, even hard to watch at times.[/QUOTE
BS...............BS...........The resume is decent
I would say Canelo over Trout would be like Floyd over Genaro or Pacquiao over Ledwaba, except that the 2 latter were very decisive in their victories.
Decisive...plus I think Hernandez is a way better fighter.
Reid and Joppy are better than Lara and Trout. Now compare their performances.
Greatness is measured by who you beat, when you beat him and HOW you beat him. Trinidad was bulldozing top contenders in multiple weight classes.
True, they are about the same as trout and Lara... That's not relevant to canelo having wins like Floyd/corrales or manny/Barrera... Floyd and manny both demolished highly rated p4p guys at their peak.. Wins like that are extremely rare in boxing, and it don't think it should hurt Canelo's legacy if he never dominantly beats an elite p4p guy, neither has cotto, Shane, oscar, Tito, etc..
Tito didn't dominate in his biggest fights vs Vargas, oscar, Hopkins..
Tito's dominant wins over joppy, Reid, campos are not the caliber of Floyd-corrales or manny/Barrera
Performances like those fights are nearly impossible and it's a testament to the greatness of Floyd and manny..
Very few guys in history have scored a complete dominant win over another top p4p guy at his peak.. I don't think it's a deal breaker if canelo never gets a win like that..

How many people were impressive against Mayweather? 2? Possibly 3?
It's an unreasonable criticism. It's not like Floyd hurt him, stopped him, or did anything un-Floyd like against him. He got severely outboxed by the best technical boxer on the planet. It's not something that should be pigeon held against him, because he's not the only one it has happened to when fighting Mayweather.
It's not like he was outclassed by a lesser fighter. It's not like he pulled a Khan, and got sparked out as a heavy favorite. Dude was an underdog going into the fight and lost. It happens all the time.
And that is what people fail to realize about Nelo.
They call him a hyped up C class fighter, who was exposed by Mayweather. But they don't see that hyped up C class fighters often get beaten badly by C class level fighters, not A+ fighters.
Just like
Berto lost to Ortiz
Senchenko lost to Malinaggi.
Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. was exposed by an old Jorge Arce.
Lemieux was exposed by Rubio
Mike Jones was exposed by Soto-Karass and finished off by Bailey.
Khan was exposed by Prescott.
Kirkland was exposed by Ishida
Angulo was exposed by Cintron.
If Canelo was all hype he would have lost to Alfonso Gomez, Kermit Cintron, or an old Shane Mosley, not to Mayweather.
You're absolutely right, it was a bad look. It certainly didnt help his stock. But for people to pigeon hold him to that one fight, is naive. Imo.
He blew his fast track to greatness, but imo - he's going to get there anyway. He's just going to have to work a little harder at it. And the way he went to the body in the Lara fight, shows me that he did learn how to deal with a boxer who is slicker than him. Atleast the best he can.
A win over Cotto and GGG would erase that.
You don't have to dismantle to impress.
Mosley looked sensational against De La Hoya after jumping weight classes.
Tito was a wrecking ball that was a bad example. We knew he had "it" immediately.
You can make an argument that Oscar lost to Whitaker but he looked like he belonged unlike Canelos 12-0 loss to Mayweayher.
It's a perfectly fair criticism. His record is pretty cool but he's getting a lot of these razor thin decisions.

It's the biggest fight of his career. Those are the moments that count the most.

I was quite critical, but he started so damn young. They really wanted to build him. He's been on a nice run and has made it clear he wants the best. I've become quite a big fan after not being so much of one in the past. I root for the guy.

He has a very solid resume at his age. Hall of Fame? No. Pound for pound? Yeah, I could see that.
I thought the Trout fight was much closer than the cards but it was a good, tough win. These are the kind of wins that won't jump out years from now (because a guy like Trout isn't HOF caliber) but are underrated. Like when Manny Pacquiao beat Ledwaba and Bradley. Mayweather beating a Chavez or Jones stopping Malinga. The Lara win is similar but Cotto will tell the tale. It's a winnable fight and would be a huge boon to his resume.
