Here me out. The old school era is always automatically favored because they are old school. This is why i love youtube. I am the biggest Ray Leonard fan, but im also realistic.
Larry Bonds: Ray, did not look good against Larry Bonds. Bonds, was moving and Ray's ability to cut off the ring was ok. But what if Bonds had Floyds counter shots and all around ability Close fight
Ayub Kalule: He nailed Ray consistently round after round. Ray caught up with him in the ninth, but Kalule is 5 notches below Floyd
Leonard, looks aweome against Davey Boy Green fighters who brawl with slow feet. Stay in front of him. If Mayweather boxes sticks that left jab to Rays body, comes back with the straight right. Its open all night
The Benitez fight....If Benitez had Floyds offense he wins
He couldnt even beat maidana soundly as he claim he would. Maidana a B plus fighter at best, and a very very poor mans version of duran who only came 157 pounds tonight. I dont know what sugar will do to him.
If you're comparing the Floyd of now v Leonard; then you're comparing the Leonard who faced Norris/Camacho and believe he beats this version of Floyd??
Prime v Prime I see nothing other than a Leonard win. It wouldn't be a blowout like some people make it out to be as Floyd can seriously box, I just think Leonard outworks him to a 115-113 type decision.
Ok, kalule was on par with a Castillo, etc..
I just think Leonard would figure him out and walk him down like he did vs Benitez..
Benitez is like a bigger version of Floyd, both really crafty and like to set traps.
As for Judah, yeah Leonard would look better obviously.. Just using him as an example because he had success early vs Floyd with handspeed/power and should have had a knockdown called when Floyd buckled and glove touched mat..
I'm not disputing that Leonard would win. I agree with you on that part of it lol. It could resemble the Benitez fight but I think Floyd is better conditioned, more focused, and has a better chin than Benitez had. When Benitez did get caught he could be hurt badly. I don't know if you've seen the Bruce Curry fights but that's an example.
Most fighters have not faced what Sugar Ray Leonard faced. That includes other greats like Whitaker, Chavez, and a lot of others. It's a very high standard to top.
I also don't agree about Kalule. I think fighters like Castillo and Corrales were at least as good as Kalule. You could argue for Canelo too.
I actually think Leonard would look better than Judah lol. I think Judah's performance has become more and more exaggerated. Those first four rounds were competitive but Judah wasn't dominating Floyd.

no. the old school era is favored because the likes of leonard faced the benitezs, durans, haglers, and hearns' of the world. there's no guy on floyd's resume that's remotely close to being better than those guys i just mentioned.
i will say this though, i think floyd is the best boxer to ever (not the greatest. greatest implies achievements and he, as much as i appreciate him as a fighter, doesn't have the names on his resume to be compared to ali or leonard) lace them up, his prowess is up there with the leonard, robinson's, jones' etc. his athletic ability and his boxing brain are second to none.
Floyd hasn't even faced guys as good as the guys Ray beat..
No one on Floyd's resume is as good as hearns, Benitez, kalule, Duran..
Leonard would beat Floyd all day at welter... Think the first 4 rds vs Judah, but instead the entire fight would look like that..

The thing with Floyd is, is that he is supposed to be a lot better than his father was. Yet cant boast of having fought anyone as good as his father did, when his father fought SRL.
Floyd wont challenge himself and wont be able to boast of having fought someone as good as his dad did, how bad does that make FLoyd look>
Floyd needs to fight GGG already. GGG might not be as good as SRL, but at least it would at least be Floyd challenging himself,

LoL.
He sure would take a vacation. I don't even know why this is a thread to begin with. If Floyd is ducking the other best fighter of his era, WHY in the world would he fight SRL????
Eat D1CK you F^cktard!! the OP clearly give some great pointer and you comeback with dumb sh1t comparing mayweather to 3 different stylistic fighters.
I kinda agree with OP Floyd will give Leonard the hardest fight of his live, but if the fight is in WW, 15 rounds and Angelo dundee is in the corner i think ray can still pull it off.
And everyone of the fighters that he mentioned would also beat Floyd.
Manny is my favorite fighter of this era, as you know. He would get KILLED too. He is too little. SRL was too big and too strong and too fast. He would KO Manny and Floyd in the same night.
I agree that neither guy stands a chance although I'm not sure about the KO part. Furthermore I think If a Mayweather vs Leanord fight was a possibility Floyd would need to take a vacation.
Leonard beat Hands of stone Roberto Duran, Thomas the hitman Hearns, , marvelous Marvin Hagler...get some rest, it must have been a long day for you

I think he would have beaten Floyd but I can't respect the way he beat Duran. I'm sorry.
It'd be a tough fight, but prime SRL stops prime FMJ late. Those brief spots where Judah & Mosely found success wouldn't be so brief with Ray. Floyd would be on the run the whole fight.
SRL destroys FMJ at 147.
However... Pound-for-pound, prime-for-prime, 130 FMJ vs. 147 SRL... that would be more competitive.
Leonard vs. Mayweather :)

Mayweather is not nearly as fast as Ray at any weight. floyd is technically able. Ray was a killer Floyd avoides guys who could fold him. Both guys had the smarts...but what engineer would you rather have work on your damn, the one who struggled and built damns in Holland and new Orleans? Or the very talented Bechtel engineer who did a coupla small ones but didn't want to try anything too big.
Noooo comparison. Floyd was ATG in the lighter weights, but never holds a candle to Sugar Ray. One guy aimed for the sun and got burnt (like he made it!) another guy wanted the moon and a lot of accolades. Its mental. Look at Floyd's face when he gets in rough situations...imagine him getting in rough with Duran now, or Hagler....No way no how he folds like a house of cards and I don't care what shape he is in! Madianna took him into deep water....a b level pressure guy.
Can't agree with that. Mayweather at 130 was as fast as anyone I've seen. Their styles are different with Sugar Ray throwing combinations more consistently. Either way, the speed is not that far off even if you favor Leonard.
I would always favor Leonard to win because they would have to fight at 147. There Leonard wins a clear decision but will definitely be frustrated at times. No way is this a blow out KO for Leonard though. With Mayweather's defense I think that's unrealistic.
It's also unfair to use an example of a fighter when they're nearing 40. That's like me using Leonard in the second Hearns fight or even the Norris fight.
