The video will not let me embed but watch this and watch the shotime clock.
His knee touches down at 30, he gets to his feet with 17 left on the clock. That is 13 seconds by my watch.
He didn't beat the referees slow count either. He moved towards Ortiz at 9 and he didn't even begin to rise until after he'd said 9

The guy lost, he didn't beat the count and was saved from a blatant hellacious beatdown.
He was down for 13 seconds & didn't beat the 10 count! He was still on his way up when out was called.
He was not totally upright as the count was waived. He'd only just stood up properly as the wave had finished.
The ref gave him every chance to get to his feet and he either accidentally waited to long/his body wouldn't react or he thought he'd take it as close to 10 as possible and wanted a way out but to make it look like he wanted to still fight so he wouldn't look a quitter.
What do you expect the referee to do stop mid-way through waiving it off?
Don't blame the referee, blame the guy who waited until 9.5 seconds to start to rise.
i'm inclined to go with this. ortiz looks less of a loser because there's controversy and he can yap on about a rematch to keep his name relevant.
The ref had that spilt second to decide and called it the way he did. It's too bad because we missed a few good rounds of boxing there because of that call ....
Ortiz looked like he was going to get up a bit sooner but thought he had the time to hold off a bit more and miscalculated by waiting that split second too long. Next time, I'm sure that Ortiz doesn't pull that again.
I got the impression that Esteves waved it off before he realised Ortiz was fully up, but regretted his decision when he realised he was OK to continue. Once the referee has waved his arms, it's all said and done though and he couldn't do anything about it.
I don't see the point in arguing over what is factually correct - up at 10 or up before 10. It's your interpretation of the rules, both are valid here. Ortiz shouldn't have left it so late, and the referee may have been a tiny bit too early himself, knowing Ortiz was rising before he counted it off
Dude....it's called a 10 count for a reason. It ends at exactly 10. It's not a 10 and then ask the guy if he's OK count.
I have worked many corners in many fights. Seen many KO's and long and short counts. The ref should at least asked if he was ok since he was up before the 10 count. I posted a gif of the moment he counted him out, I would have at least asked if he was ok or wanted to continue.
Also the mouth piece argument isn't much of an argument by some. Many boxers have spit out their mouth piece and not been disqualified. I thought Esteves at least should have asked him if he wanted to continue.
Ok I just rewatched the count, he was up split second before the 10 count. Now here is my issue with this stoppage, Benji Esteves should have at least asked him if he wanted to continue, not end it exactly at 10.
I know he spit his mouth piece out, and he didn't complain, but again, technically he beat the count and AT LEAST he should have asked him if he wanted to continue.
I'm not a fan of Benji Esteves, he's a very biased ref. I have seen him pull some really questionable stuff in Puerto Rico before. Fans pay money to see the fights, fighters train for 6-8 weeks, at least ask him if he wants to continue and not count him out exactly at 10.
My only beef.

He was in the act of rising at 10.
He was at 10 BEFORE he was fully stood up.
Most, if not all referees, would give the benefit of the doubt and look at the fighter, ask them to come to him, ask if they want to continue, wipe off their gloves, and let the fight ensue.
This ref did not of that... I disagree with it, but at the same time, he doesn't have to.
The fighter didn't even flinch or complain in the least about the stoppage, which tells me he didn't really want to continue anyway... which is really all that matters.

I hate to defend Ortiz because he was awful and would have been brutally beaten anyway but you guys are wrong here.
First, it doesn't matter how many real time seconds have passed. It goes by the referees count which Ortiz did beat.
Second, just take a look at the boxing rules. It only states that a fighter must be on his feet before the count of 10. Ortiz was on his feet before the count of ten. His knee was no longer on the canvas when Benjy said ten. This isn't hard to get.
spot on here, although I don't think Ortiz was terrible, he was giving it a good try but all that's irrelevant, he was up at the count of 9...it doesn't matter at what stage you get up, you just gotta get up before 10 and people here don't seem to get that. It was like the Malik Scot KO.
On Ortiz's part, he should have risen at 8 but he stayed that extra second longer, it shouldn't have been a ko either way tbh.
Ok i just round to watching this fight...
Lack of common sense from ref and dumb stupidity from the fighter i reckon.
Ortiz either miscounted what number the ref was counting, doesnt understand you cant start standing up at nine (fcking hell :lol1: even if you are up at 9.5 why take the chance?), or just did the whole 'quit without looking like I want to quit' routine.
Ref should have used common sense and let the fight carry on IMO. Even if he was well within his rights to stop it. If Ortiz was really done he would have known pretty quick, and its not like he had taken a lot of damage in the fight.
So yeah, my two cents.
I was just reading some Mexican news, lots of comments saying that Ortiz was ****y and disrespectful with other boxers back home, thinking himself better than everyone else. Most Mexicans commenting were glad he got stopped and brought down from his high horse.
 people getting hurt feelings in this thread
If you go by the rules Racer posted then yes, he was not up.
IMO feel the ref should of let it go on.
Khan was on queer street tho
in the 3º round he was badly hurt, but in the 4º (the one i was referring) he wasn't that bad, he beat the count and he even responded to bayless.
Without racer59's post at #135 all sorts of stupid posters would have continued to roll this thread on and on.
Note: I never saw a stupid poster here to simply admit "well, I was wrong..."
Someone call REED. Tell him to bring the yellow tape and the body bags. We have a crime scene in our hands.
Shots being fired and a lot of people arent getting up.
Someone needs to pin this rule on this site so that everyone will finally know that you have to be fully up to have beaten the count. It will save on some whining.
stay tough on the net, baby nuts. thats the only place you will ever be tough.
and you werent right, i didnt bother reading whatever nonsense whoever that was posted. nor will i continue this pointless dialogue with some e-thug like you.
but you have a nice day now. i hope you got your daily e-thugging out of the way so you can keep suffering the real worlds abuse in silence.
I wasn't trying to be tough, precious. Where did I ever try to act tough? You tried to be condescending and I hit you back with the same treatment.
You couldn't take being wrong which explains why you even now refuse to acknowledge the actual rules. You've thrown your toys out of the pram and abandoned the thread :lol1:
We're not going to meet in the real world so luckily for you, I'll have to be content embarrassing you on an intellectual level. Which isn't much of a challenge. Very fundamental stuff.
