Why didn't PAC choose to be a free agent? Why Thurman, Porter, Khan, Guerrero, ...why can't they be free agents?
Why did Tim Bradley and Pac resign with Top Rank and the devil Arum?
Why does Floyd have an exclusive deal with Showtime? Why, why why?
Answer...
GUARANTEED money and purses.... Over the length of the contract.

Financial security
Same reasons why NBA players seek out long term deals, why an extra year on a contract is appealing.
Operating as a free agent has its risks. Just because Cotto can do it, doesn't mean everyone will be successful at it.
Thanks for the responses.
My thread post was actually sarcastic... I was debating this issue with a poster earlier who kept critizing why Pacquiao would re-up with Top Rank and that he should be a free agent.
That poster didn't understand everything about the game and was too hard headed to understand that promoters have their purpose.
Unless you're in the small percentage of boxers who rakes in million dollar paydays for fights, you wont be able to afford to pay for marketing, promotion, etc. That's where promoters come in. They front the money for everything and collect on the back end.
Not to mention, its very time consuming especially when you're training.
My assumptions are:
- It's a ton of work on top of fighting and training etc.
- Not everyone has the business intellect.
-Fighters are too dependent especially if they are with a good promoter, which ties in with my first two points
So, in short not everyone can be a businessman.
Don't fighters get a monthly allowance from promoters too?
I could've sworn I read something before that claimed Mikey Garcia got like $20k a month just for training. Same thing for Victor Ortiz...
That is how it is SUPPOSE TO BE to be honest, fighters are not suppose to be working for Promoters, Promoters are suppose to be working for THE FIGHTERS!
huh.......?
