Newsday reporting Algieri turned down an offer of 1.5 million hoping to land a bigger payday to put his unbeaten record on the line in China vs Pacquiao. Ballsy move for the new WBO Champion. Will his calculated gamble pay off? Will Top Rank up the anti or move on? Hopefully it pays off for him. http://www.newsday.com/sports/boxing/chris-algieri-looks-to-land-upper-cut-in-pay-for-fight-with-manny-pacquiao-1.8782471
from 100,000 to 1.5 million ...not to mention the opportunity to fight the greatest fighter of this era on a big stage.
and he's complaining? i used to respect algieri, but i don't know anymore. smh.
I just found out his promoter wants 60% of the purse. So who could blame Algieri? I wouldn't fight Pacquiao in China for 600 K and give my promoter who isn't fighting or paying other expenses, trainers, camp etc more than I was making. I don't blame Algieri one bit. This is bs at its highest level. This promoter should be shot. What a scumbag. Good for Chris turning it down....now that promoter gets nothing. Greedy scumbag. Respect
New Daily News article today....appears Algieri and his promoter have a serious disconnect. Kid is playing hardball and his manager says it isn't about money but in interview yesterday Algieri said it IS about money and getting paid what he is worth. Call me crazy but I trust the fighter here over the promoter. I wonder how much the promoters take is? The devil is always in the details. http://m.nydailynews.com/sports/more-sports/long-island-boxer-algieri-danger-losing-pacquiao-fight-article-1.1865582
he could end up making a lot more actually if he waits, maybe take on Provonikov in a rematch or another top 140 guy or maybe move up and take a fight at 147 against a good opponent before jumping in with Pacquiao
Even though I dont think he's worth that much or has the bargaining power to demand anything, considering his situation its not a bad play. If he doesnt get the manny fight, the #1 contender for his title is JMM, and #2 is Matthysse. Either one of those fights (or even a Provo rematch) would likely get him $1million or more, so even if he doesnt get the Pac fight he's gonna get paid regardless.......
Canelo got 1.5 mill last night
Lara got 1 mill last night
Martinez got 1.5 mill vs Cotto
Maidana got 1.5 mill vs Floyd
Does Algeiri think hes a bigger name than any of these guys?
If he was fighting anyone else he would be lucky to get 250k
Idiotic move. Just like Lara, this guy brings nothing to the table. He'll never see a payday like that again. He won the lottery but instead of being grateful he ripped up the ticket. Now he may get nothing.
If that's true he's an idiot, he has zero leverage, he should be humbly thankful he is getting an undeserved payday and make the most of it.
Lol, he's got plenty of leverage.
TR pigeon holed themselves into this fight - offering three options, JMM - Algieri - Abregu
JMM ain't fighting, he's made it clear. Abregu has been out of the spotlight since the Dulorme fight and has never made a true impact in the sport. Algieri was just on HBO and beat Ruslan, so he has momentum.
****, why take 1.5 for a beating (presumably) in a market he has no chance of winning on the cards? After paying his 28% US taxes, 10% to the training team, 10% to management, overhead costs for living arrangements and training, his take home pay would be significantly less. Why not get more? Who else is there that'll be November ready that has any appeal? Algieri isn't a big name, but at least there's something...the tassles!
On a tiny level - I was offered a job this past Thursday in Tampa FL. They offered me 55K. I countered that to sustain my standard of living that I have in Pennsylvania, I need 65K. They countered on Friday afternoon for 62.5K
So now, I have to mull over a job offer I have now in Tampa FL and one I have for 69K in Virginia. I guess I'll let the wife decide - but man, if I am not going to sell myself short - why should a professional boxer who's getting their face beat in?
Pacquiao really has no other available options which is sad. It's basically between either Algieri, Abregu, or Provodnikov for November. I thought Guerrero was possible, but I guess since he's with Haymon it's not likely.
Algieri should just be thankful that he is getting a manny fight,,,,
In no way does he deserve a huge payday..
solid win over ruslan, but at this point chris is a one hit wonder.. few more top level wins then yeah he can demand more money, but now just be thankful manny fight is even on the table..
^^^^^^^
Exactly couldn't say it better myself
