As far as I'm concerned, everything happened too early to really be able to assess whether Martinez's knees were truly the culprit.
Think about Berto-Ortiz, Froch-Groves 1, and countless other fights where a fighter gets caught cold in the first and has trouble getting his legs back. It's not like this is some crazy thing to think.
Sergio definitely wasn't 100% but to dismiss this is grossly unfair to Cotto's performance. He shook Serg up good in the 1st and Sergio just couldn't get his legs back under him, that didn't happen cause of knee surgery.
He was literally hobbling back to the corner after every round. He almost fell down throwing a punch.
His legs were gone. He was shot to sh*t.
I rarely if ever see fighters return to their corners without looking punch drunk after taking those kinds of shots Sergio took.
And he wasnt hobbling in that round when he tried to run after Cotto with his back turned.
I get the feeling if cotto got put in the ring with Muhamed Ali right now and KTFO people would still give him credit.
Key Points -
- Knee Surgery
-Cotto & Roach both said his knees were shot
- Martinez said he didn't want to take anything away from the champion ( meaning he could if he didn't have class)
- The knockdowns didn't look like clear ones more balance issues
- Martinez got up very quickly & didn't look buzzed
- 3rd knockdown he stumbled back when he got back up, eye completely lucid
- Round 8 , 27 seconds left throws a punch knee gives way and he buckles
- Didn't try unload on the left because he couldn't due to the knee
Noobs
Martinez has been knocked down several times in his career the same way he was knocked down last night. It's unreal how quick the Martinez supporters have gone to use his knee as an excuse. Cotto was really in a lose lose with a lot of people last night.
Sergio is the most overrated fighter ever.
The due coasted for the past 5 years and for some reason everyone gave him a pass. I'm so happy to see him finally get that belt that he has been holding hostage taken away.
I'm glad it was Cotto that got to do it also. A shame Golovkin didn't get his shot, that would have been a massacre.
Of course he didn't say it. Sergio is a true champion who refuses to make excuses. You have to be downright stupid or just ignorant not to see that his knees were completely fuked.
You're a Cotto fanboy so delusion is your main trait I suppose.
Except hes made excuses for every loss or bad performance this far.....
Martinez fought a smaller, quality fighter, his reflexes, size and talent (even though he wasn't that great) threw him off. This wasn't some tall stiff bum that he's used to dancing around and out maneuvering like JCC or any of his recent opponents these past few years. The last time Martinez has looked like an elite MW was his fight against Pavlik.
No longer was he fighting the bums of the MW division, he was fighting a small, yet somewhat quality fighter (compared to his recent opposition).
All this fight does is confirm what I've been saying for years, 160 is extremely overrated.
I give 100% credit to Cotto though, he went in there and did what he had to do.
We all know he has been very vulnerable for a while now. He has been slowing down. Fighters have been catching up to him and knocking him down. His shaky pins and diminished reflexes were not making his chin safe.
The surgeries may have helped his knees a little, but cannot save him from father time.
Cotto on the other hand looked Strong, in tune and crisp.
What, are you gonna argue with Martinez aswell, for the sake of trying to discredit cotto? Yes, 'magically'. Sergio didn't say it was his knee giving him the problems, but said he had a hard time recovering from the shot. To break that down for you stoooopids, he had a tough time leaving queer street.
Quite simply, you were never right. Only wrong. Cotto was simply just the better fighter all along.
Cotto beat the lineal champ, who hasn't been beaten this decade. He deserves his due props.

Magically? His knees were already shot. He was wearing two knee braces ffs! It's undeniable to those who aren't completely delusional. The first thing I said to my friend was "his knees looked fuked" and that was just seconds after the first bell.
It doesn't matter what he said. He had to sell the fight. If I'd paid for that sh1t, I'd actually be pretty mad at Sergio for going into the ring at what couldn't have been more than 20%.

Martinez isn't what he was but had he got KO'd in the first round that would of slighted this win more than the later round stoppage, Sergio was still fighting back enough that had Cotto not been honed in it could of been closer at least.
Cotto fought a superb tactical fight pressured when he wanted, boxed/countered when he wanted, rested when he wanted basically did whatever he wanted all the while still looking fresh/bouncing on his toes until the end.
Incorrect. His knees magically became shot right after he got put on queer street.
My knees are 100 percent, he said. No man can possibly be as strong as me, he said. I'm going to win because I'm bigger, he said. I'm going to ko cotto in 9, he said.

Sergio's clearly done, but the way I see it, he was never that great in the first place. Cotto is a much better fighter to me. Before beating Paul Williams - Martinez fought absolute trash fighters. The only recognisable opponents before PW are Margarito and Cintron, and in the fights he got stopped once and got a draw. This guy didn't really step up until his mid-30s. People talk about Martinez's prime but his prime literally consists of Pavlik and PW - that's it. Pavlik is a drunk overrated guy who is easily outboxed and PW and Martinez had a close fight first time round. A great knockout of a top fighter - but not a great fighter - doesn't make you great. Virtually every fight since PW2, barring Dzinziruk who sucks anyway, Martinez has had some sort of trouble or hasn't looked great. Everyone just dismisses this as Martinez being out of prime. So his prime lasted about 2 years then out of an almost 20 year career. He has one or two top notch wins. That's it.
I found it really disturbing the way he was hobbling around in there and felt sorry for him. He is obviously going to need more knee surgery in the future. He would be an idiot to fight again with his legs in such terrible condition. He needs to minimize the damage done to them at all costs.
You could tell in the first 10 seconds that his knees were shot. He looked liked he was hobbling around on wooden legs.

Nah. Murray, Macklin, Chavez, Williams and Pavlik all floored him
This is not true
No what I meant to say he's gone down at least once in those fights. It's nothing new to see Martinez consistently go down and get up to continue.
