Back 70-80 years ago heavyweight boxers used to wear 6oz horse hair gloves. We would get a lot of knockouts, attacking entertaining fights and boxing was at it's height.
Nowadays the gloves are soft absorbing big 10oz gloves, making for boring defense minded fights, where the average guy on the streets has no clue on who the middleweight champion is.
Do we need to bring back the smaller gloves, less foam filled lighter gloves to make boxing great again.
Who could forget (try as we must) Clottey's performance against Pacquiao where because of the huge gloves he could just stay in his shell all night.
If we want greater skill, more action, more knockouts, attack minded fighters then bringing back smaller gloves will do this.
Who is with me:boxing:
Poll Coming!!!
Actually in these modern times knockouts are more prevalent. With less padding guys were more cognizant of breaking their hands. That's in general, as in any era there are always knockout punchers but for the most part guys didn't have 70 or 80 percent kayo ratios.
Bingo. You throw more body shots and you're more measured with your shots to the head. Hence there being way less brain injury and death when bare knuckle boxing was around. Guys faces probably got a lot more screwed up with bruises and cuts but deaths just didn't happen as often even with a TON of rounds.
Years ago they also fought 100's of rounds bareknuckle...maybe we should go back to that
Old time fighters were truly great, these things need to be considered when working out who the best ever was
boxing would be copying mmgay, which is wrong on principle
boxing needs less rounds, to reduce damaged brains and so boring decisions end quicker
That is a horrible idea. God I wish when they reduced from 15 they would have gone to 13 instead of 12. I hate having an even number of rds.
It's a tough sport, but you cant give them mitts and have a fight; they need their safety. You can look at abdusalomov for example, that is with padding.
Actually abdusalomov might have been saved by smaller gloves because he most likely would have been knocked out earlier instead of taking punishment for 12 rds. There is a cost to everything and bigger gloves with more padding aren't necessarily safer just like helmets in football aren't necessarily safer. See rugby.
Smaller gloves would mean more action in fights, and yes the defensive guys like hopkins, floyd, vasquez would still be able to be defenders, and the better defenders would still have success, i just think that punchers would have much better chance than they do today, and the sport would be more compelling because these fights could end at any time..
And even guys lacking punching power like pauli or bradley would be able to rock guys with 4 oz gloves..
Exactly, guys with great defence, shoulder rolls head movement will still be able to do their thing, but the non skilled turtle shell defence with the big gloves that make for boring fights will be come to an end.
It will also improve a fighters handspeed, increase accuracy and clean shots and create more knockouts.
just reduce championship fights to 10 rounds so high calibur but boring fights will end quicker and be forgotten. If a knockout was mean to happen, it will happen sooner, within 30 minutes
dudes will also take less strikes when their mostly spent after the 30th minute
floyd won't have to prance for 6 additional minutes in a conclusive fight
I have thought over the past few years, that making rounds 5 mins long would be beneficial to fight fans..
How many times have you seen action heat up, but then get saved by the bell. Adding on a min or 2 to each round would be sweet...
Maybe only have 6 or 8 fights with longer rounds..
I also like the MMA Pride rounds, when the first round was 10 mins long, and 5 mins after that... In boxing, hardly anything happens in the first round, so they should just make it 10 min round, then have like 3 or 4 rounds of 5 mins each....
That would really test guys, and make for better fights IMO
You have to pick 8oz or 10oz gloves though.
Years agao heavyweight would use 6oz gloves, nearly half the size of current gloves and made of horse hair not foam.
Lets make the gloves smaller again, limit their size and make them balanced.
that was also back when people died in the ring a ton more

It's a great movie, i've seen it twice.
or it will just promote "boxing" over going to war
you know what fighters do when they dont want to get ko'd right?

Yeah, something like that... Would love to see guys throwing down with that size gloves...
It would put an end to all the fighters that fight not too lose and just win on points...
Punchers or aggressive fighters would benefit greatly, and fights in general would be more compelling

Yeah, speedbag mittens:

Protect your hands just fine with wraps but they don't convert sharp impact into blunt force trauma the way normal fight gloves do.

I always wanted to see boxing with the 4 oz gloves like they use in MMA,,, maybe not opened-finger like in MMa but 4 oz gloves would be very entertaining..
I'm not saying the punch is going to hurt too much. I'm saying punches hurt. Period. That's a fact. If Brandon Rios gets punched in the face, it's going to hurt. He's not going to say it hurts, but it will hurt. That's just something boxers or fighters are going to have to live with. Just because a boxer states a fact and says getting punched in the face hurts doesn't mean the sports not for him. It's how he deals with that engraved solid truth that punches hurt. If you get punched in the face enough, whiplash or not, they will add up and cause permanent damage. And no one believes that a smaller glove will make the sport safer, other than you.
Speed generates power. That's science. That's mathematics. That's logic. In another words, you can't argue with that.
The other part of that equation is mass, less mass less power.
And more knock out less cumulative damage from punches.
5oz and 6oz gloves will make the sport so much better.
Serious brain injuries are caused by the whiplash effect, if anything smaller gloves will make the sport safer.
And if the punches hurt too much, maybe the sport is not for you
