I remember hearing something about a sparring session between Kovalev and GGG, does anyone know the details? If I recall, GGG's trainer stated "he wasn't who we thought he was", not sure if that was a compliment or insult.
It'd be interesting to know how two strong punchers did against each other.:boxing:
What's the size difference between Chavez Jr and Kov? I know Jr has fought in smaller divisions but he might just be a bigger guy come fight night. I have no idea whatsoever at the weight Kov comes in at.
So I would love to see these two go at it. I think, like Jr, legend has it that ggg got the better of Kov. So why not?
I am not saying it couldn't of happened and it is just sparring but I have seen a lot of footage of GGG sparring and he is not a fighter who goes all out or anywhere close.
He doesn't go all out when he fights guys his size or smaller. That's why his trainer makes him spar with light heavyweights, cruiserweights and even heavyweights so he can let his shots go.
golovkin doesn't cover up, so maybe kovalev had a little trouble getting off
that jab was probabley snapping his head back alot, but in an actual fight kovalev is probabley too big
If your just starting your spar sessions and you get caught in the gut you can get the air taken out. It means your not in top condition and you got caught breathing wrong at the wrong time! Fans have a foolish idea about spar sessions, theres a tape of GGG sparring with Junior Chavez and they're working together to HELP each other. Fighters relish getting good work and they will protect each other during the sessions.
Now when they near their fights and the sessions become "opened" up then they need to beware and on top of their game but those sessions are much fewer than the normal work sessions.
Beating up spar partners will get you very lonely in your gym!
GG is a much better technician than Kova is, he has a more well rounded approach and has a better arsenal. Kova needs to fight more often and not be concerned who he's fighting. He needs to work on his foot work especially backing out! I saw something in the last fight that would concern me as an advisor to him. He looked very awkward retreating and backed out in a straight line to often. That's when punchers can get hurt, their foot work gets out of sorts. We saw his opponent get dropped from a jab because both his feet were of the canvas as he retreated. Foot work moving forward is very important but its MORE important as you go back. That's when everyone is at risk!
Ray.

Just sparring anyway who cares who dropped who or who got the better of it
When you're sparring as much as these guys and you're bringing fresh legs in, occasionally a much lesser will get the better of it
I remember someone posting about Kovalev being "to respectfull" of golovkin while sparring. Don't know if it's true but seems likely as they appear to be pretty close friends.
I don't think they'll fight anytime soon due to the weight difference, however GGG's trainer seemed to elude that he was more than able to hang with Kovalev. Just curious if anyone had the inside scoop.
Two excellent fighters and great punchers. I think GGG is better pfp but Kovalev is at least 15 pounds bigger naturally and maybe more than that. When you have two powerhouses against each other the one with that much size advantage should get the best of things.
Yes, but GGG has some serious power, enough to hurt Kovalev or knock him out, I think. Prime Tyson wasn't a big heavyweight and was outweighed by his opponents but his smaller size gave way for better movement and speed. I think a motivated and hungry GGG could very much knockout Kovalev but since they're in different weight classes that's not going to happen.

GGG isn't even a big middleweight and Kovalev is a big light heavyweight. They fight 15 lbs. apart so the advantage would definitely go to Kovalev on paper but in a fight you never know. I still think GGG has enough power to catch and hurt Kovalev, especially the way he rushes in.
