How would you rate his performance last night? Sure, he was countered, and the fight lasted longer than we thought it would, but really, he dominated the fight. We now know how he does when he's cut, and that he has the stamina to go the later rounds.
he fought a bum so i cant really say
Agreed. Agnew had an inflated record and clearly wasn't in Kovalev's class.
Can't tell anything about Kovalev when he's fighting a 38-1 underdog.
They are a full 15 lbs apart, and something tells me GGG isn't going to fully campaign at 168 quite yet, despite the Chavez fight. Plus they are incredibly good friends, I don't think they'd want to. The most they will continue to do is spar.
Yes they were just hanging together earlier this week. Why give each other a set back at this point?
The most impressive thing to me about kovalev is that he gets full extension on all his shots. we know he has sick power, and amazing hand speed, combine that with great sense of position and the ability to cut the ring, he's the 175 version of GGG
GGG/Chavez Winner vs Kovalev
Pleeeeeeease HBO

You're the first person I saw that says Kovalev has great hand speed. Anyway, Kovalev vs GGG is a horrible idea. I don't want their paths to cross this early. Hell no. there's plenty of other work to do.
JDJ said he's training Kovalev to go to the body more. We should expect to see more of it later. Kovalev has a very bright future. His power is like Tyson's in his era. We haven't had a puncher this big in ages.

Agnew did a good job in lulling Kovalev into pure offense, and unloaded when he least expected, landing some pretty good quick, hard flurries.
When you got a guy who is defending incredibly tight, only throws in hard flurries, and those flurries come only 3 times a round.. it's going to put the pure offensive minded fighter off balance when it happens.
Absolutely, and well stated. I tried to get this point across on other boards but couldn't word it the way you did here. I agree 100%. I can see you know your stuff.
The issue with Kovalev's response to this is that he was moving straight back to avoid the blows. JDJ addressed that after rd1 or 2. Kovalev can train up on that for his next fight. Every fight is a learning experince;)
I think it's one of his more proving performances to date. How many times have you seen a guy shell up, decide he is ok with merely going the distance, and actually going the distance?

He went for the KO that earns him an A from me, he entertains the fans unlike some fighters
Yes, indeed. That's all he wants. To entertain the fans, and be the champion. The money is secondary. We need more fighters like this guy. I love him win, lose or draw. A breath of fresh air.
Agnew's best punch was in round 3, a right hook to the head that left a scuff mark on Kovalev's forehead. He had success with the right hook two more times, but they were ineffective. Then he landed a nice left hook to the body during the headbutting incident.
That's it. Nothing to mention.
How could anyone say they weren't impressed? He only got hit 25-30 times, only 3 of which were solid. And he won by KO with a jab to the body that broke the guys ribs. Agnew is in a world of hurt today ... I guarantee you that.

My only complaint is that he didn't go to the body by the second round, when it was clear Agnew was going to cover up and do nothing. He should have sent those left hands downstairs constantly. You saw what happened when he did.
Yeah, and even if what happened didn't, going to the body might have encourage him to drop that guard. Beyond what's been said here, I wouldn't have minded seeing him try uppercut between the guard instead of just smashing the guard. But he had a good outing.
I do think Kovalev, GGG, and Thurman all have a similarity in the form of way too little head movement and a propensity to go straight back. They all have big KO power as well, but that's going to bite each of them at some point.
Remeber Kovalev are hyped to be a KO machine, he had to look impressive and his the one making the fight by being agressive.
He went to fight without a gameplan and no info on agnew other than his a southpaw boxer.
Kovalev took more chanses and tried hard fro hbo to be exiting against a guy who only concentraded on defence. Kovalev is a good counterpuncher but he didn't have the chance to show it against a guy that wouldn't open up.
Kovaleb did good but he should't go after the KO like that always, he's also a good boxer.
Look at kovalev vs sillakh, he's studying sillakh and tries to counter sillakh each time sillakh sets his feet, sillakh has very good handspeed but kovalev is fast in his head and hands
Just a shame he went through a unnecessary headbutt and cut due to that dirty bastard Agnew who lets face knew he had no chance in hell after being knocked down the first time.
I think Kovalev is good for the sport, he gets far too much biased "racist" slack for a Russian fighter from some of our small minded members. He composes himself well and comes across as polite as he can.
His cornermen are black for gods sake!
