Did he wait until he got older and saw some slippage in him? why did he not take the fight earlier? he even held a press conference where Hagler thought he would announce the fight only to announce his retirement? so was it a cherrypick?
Marvellous Marvin's mistake was to wanna box with Leonard instead of going at him.Maybe father time had caught up and he couldn't.But when he came out for the first round not in his usual stance, showed a lack of confidence NOT surprise.
An inactive, smaller fighter who had been dropped in his last fight goes against the undisputed middleweight champion of the world is hardly a cherry pick. Leonard saw himself in the ring with Hagler during one of Hagler's fights and thought he could win and he did just that.

100% yes. Although Leonard wasn't at his best anymore he saw that Hagler wasn't as well
Leonard was out for 3 years. Well it wasn't as honorable as picking juan manuel marquez and making him jump three divisions but what are you going to do.
Lol nice one.
Love Ray but I do think he was very cautious with how he selected his fights. Knew Duran would get fat for the immediate rematch. Waited a decade to fight him again. Fought Marvin after he already started slipping. Great fighter no doubt but he was selective and said so himself
Yeah very selective
What about fighting Duran in the 1st fight
Or prime benitez
Or prime hearns
Or prime kalule
The dude fought a who's who of atg in a span of 2 years
Even his comeback fight was vs a prime hall of famer terry Norris
Yeah real selective...smh

Wrong Answer..the fight was a huge gamble..everyone thought Ray was
getting knocked out including you,now you play Monday morning
quarterback...
Now you are going to tell me what I thought. I am not a child and do not subscribe to how everyone else feels or believes is how I feel. You probably thought Matthysse was going to blast Garcia. You do not have to play Monday morning quarterback when you are aware of what each person is capable of on Friday.
He beat Marvin when he was champ..period...Marvin failed,Ray won.
yeah wait til marv was older, fight like a biatch, then run from a rematch.
sugar gay is why boxing is so pussified now.
cherrypicking primadonna ali wannabe.
the sugar gay legacy.
f a g couldn't even come up with his own nickname.
No. Leonard had some demands met, but no. He was 100 years old in boxing years and retired. Hearns waxed him shortly after.
dumb ass bringing up ray's age.
hagler was older, turned pro 4-5 years earlier AND had DOUBLE ray's fights.
yeah ray was old. LMFAO
Why do people keep bringing up the fact that Hagler was favored to win so it is not a cherry pick? Perception usually is not reality. Hagler was never going to destroy Sugar Ray. The fact that Leonard waited to fight Hagler was planned. Cherry pick is not the word I would use, but Leonard knew what he was doing.
ray didn't want a piece of marvelous til he thought marvin was slowing down.
FACT.
He beat him fair and square....it's called BOXING not BRAWLING..Ray won.
it's called boxing not game of tag.
lmfao at flurrying ineffectively last 30 seconds to steal rounds as BOXING.
sugar gay ran from the rematch like a biatch too.
1A Duran
1B Hagler
3 Sugar Gay
4 Anorexic Tommy
I don't care how long Ray waited,it was a HUGE gamble...Ray made it
look easy but it wasn't easy..Ray was 1/1000 of a second from being
knocked out throughout the whole fight, and he came through with the
W....it was a great win for Ray..no doubt.
The fight was not some huge gamble. That is why Sugar Ray waited. Back to the perception vs reality! Ray was not a defensive genius, but he could move. He did what he had to do to get the W, but stop acting like Hagler was some boogieman. And the fight was not easy for Ray, but he got it done. Like I said, he waited for a reason. Do I agree with the TS that it was a cherry pick, No. But to dismiss the fact that he waited and stated in interviews that he waited should not be dismissed as nothing.

You can't cherry pick a longtime dominant atg champ, that you are a huge underdog against, and coming out of a five year retirement and fighting at a higher weight that you have never competed at...
Dumb question
Hagler didn't win..Ray landed more punches officially, and as the Champion,
Hagler should have done more. The burden was on Hagler,he was the champ,
he should have knocked Ray out..but he didn't.
As much as I hate when people say that the burden is on the challenger to take the fight to the champion because he has to really beat the champ to take his belt, this is the first time I've ever heard that the burden is on the champ to go in and knock out the challenger.
Both ideas are ridiculous, yours even more so than the traditional idea of the challenger taking the champions belt. Each guy has the same burden of winning the fight on equal terms.
Well Leonard did wait to fight Hagler after he saw the Mugabi fight, but I have a hard time calling this a cherry pick. Hagler was supposed to smash him. Regardless of what you thought of the decision, coming back to fight Hagler was ballsy.
