Anybody else find this sad? Also, what's to blame? modern boxing, the Cold War, health, ect.?
Let's look at some fight projections for 2014:
Mayweather - Maidana in May than somebody else in September.
Maidana - Mayweather in May than possibly somebody in the fall if not retirement.
Pacquiao - Bradley in April than somebody around November/December.
Bradley - Pacquiao in April and probably another opponent in the fall/winter.
Garcia - Herrera in March than probably somebody in the fall.
Rigo - No listed opponents, will be lucky to fight twice while Top Rank tries to screw him.
Ward - I can see him fighting once or twice in 2014.
Cotto/Martinez - fight each other in June than we might see them fight somebody else later this year.
Broner - fighting on big bro's undercard than probably on big bro's other undercard later this year....
ect.. you get the point now.
A few top level fighters that might fight more than twice are Canelo, Kovalev, GGG, and Stevenson but even they will only fight 3 times if we're lucky.
It sure looks that way. This has been a pretty disappointing first quarter for 2014 so far. I hope it gets better for April,May and june. I have no interest in Pac vs Bradley 2 or Mayweather vs Maidana. I will most likely order Cotto vs Martinez and won't count on getting a great undercard since it will be a TR card.
Just because someone doesn't hold a belt doesn't make them a bum. Just because they aren't on the P4P list doesn't make them a bum. Now a days everyone who isn't a top dog is just a bum.
There are contenders, and there is a need for them, there is also good reason to fight them. I would like fighters to go back to fighting 6-8 times a year, just filling the gaps between belt defenses with non title fights with up and comers.
my point is that ggg, kovalev and lsc aren't doing anything special.....saying that you appreciate that they're hungry is funny especially in ggg case, because multiple guys have been calling him out and he chooses to fight bums instead.
sounds like you have a separate beef with GGG
i dont know...who?

who says that all the top guys aren't hungry? and aren't committed to boxing.......i highly doubt that kovalev, ggg, and santa cruz train harder than floyd, pac, ward or bradley, all of the top guys train like they're "hungry" otherwise they wouldn't be on top......on top of that, all of the top guys fight the top champions or contenders in their division consistently! ggg, lsc and kov haven't beat anyone worth crap in their division......fighting 3-4 bums a year is nothing to appreciate. plus on the business side, it takes longer for superstars to build a ppv. floyd, pac, ward and bradley can't fight the adama's and bellew's of the world without getting backlash. floyd and ward can't even fight in their own damn natural division without getting backlash.
i dont know...who?
That they want to be in the ring. That they wan to stay sharp and in form all year round. That they are hungry. That they are committed to boxing.

but if they're fighting bums, whats there to appreciate?

Its ridiculous
Gotta appreciate guys like Golovkin, Kovalev, Santa cruz, who fight at least 3-4 times a year

Yeah, I understand these guys can't be fighting top fighters every fight, but they can at least fight be fighting contenders like Stevenson and Kovalev did last year.
See, my point is that guys like Mayweather, Pacquiao, and possibly Cotto can do this. They're established names and their legacies are in tact, plus they not only put on big fights but big events. They're following the Oscar De La Hoya mold if you will.
Guys like Rigo, Garcia, Thurman, Bradley, Ward, ect. are still trying to build their brand and should be fighting 3-5 times a year.
If not, then the next generation of boxers will end their careers with 20-25 fights.
well the biggest names pac and may have done this for a while, i guess they just let the hype grow and grow. remember floyd used to only fight one time a year, still sold PPV well.
now they have to do 24/7, press tour press conferences, all kinds of sh*t because fights arent free anymore
please...they dont HAVE to only fight twice a year, that is nonsense.
this is an era of excellent talent that wont get in the same ring. 24/7, press tours and "all kinds of Sh*t" happens simultaneously.
That's about normal. Mayweather used to fight once a year, Pacquiao has fought twice a year since 2007-2008. Donaire was praised in 2011 for upping the standard to 3-4 fights a year.
