The philly shell is a defense you can eat alot of punches with if you don't know to use it if you're new to it, im not saying i cant pull it of, im just saying y'all might be not able to.
It's not even called the Philly shell, you f*cking retard. It's a basic cross-arm defense that was known as "the crab" until EA Sports started calling it the Philly shell in the fight night video game series.
Anytime someone calls it the Philly shell you're basically announcing to the world that you knew nothing about boxing until you played "fight night."
then i guess many a trainer are retarded as f*ck then huh? gtfoh kid

I'd say the crab style is different to the shoulder roll style defense.
The Crab style is more like Ken Norton or Archie Moore.
The "Shoulder roll" is a little different, albeit similar.
Hard to differentiate because they're similar.
The Shoulder roll we see being used today by Mayweather and Toney etc was orginiated by George Benton. Who's ironically from Philidelphia. Which has no link to the "Philly Shell" which I don't think is an actual term for the style or atleast I'd never hard of it until recent years.
The whole style of rolling your sholders and crossing your arms over to avoid punches has been used and variated for over 100 years.
some people also call it "elbow roll"
it might be because its a good position for boxer to roll a couple of elbows without the reff noticing it
i kind of think of using philly shell as a way to win ur opponent by points
because the way the body is position its not a good position to throw a KO type of punch
What kills me is how guys stand there stiff as hell with no upper body movement and not rolling the shoulders. Do they even watch Floyd or Toney for that matter? :dead:
Ezzard Charles used it before Benton I believe. That's who James Toney modeled himself after.
I wouldn't consider Charles to have that style simimlar to Floyd or Toney (Although Toney's and Floyd's are different anyway)
He used his shoulders to defend punches and kept his left arm some what low a lot but he didn't really counter off the shoulder or fight exclusively to that style.
Benton's variation is much closer.
A long list of fighters back then, in Charles era and before that used a variation of a shoulder roll type defense. It's a very "old school" style with a long list of different varision.
It's hard to say really, there's no doubt Toney took parts of Charles game and added it to his game, definitely his counter right hand but like I said I think the foundation of that style, the modern day shoulder roll was originated by Benton.

Does anybody know where this "philly shell" or the shoulder roll originated? Did it really start from Philly? Or maybe Detroit? New York? Somebody school me on this.
I'm curious how this defense came about. The only two fighters I know that does it well is Floyd and James Toney.
Hopkins does it well and so did George Benton...try watching some Archie Moore as well,he was mean with his pull counter right hand
oh and who do you think taught floyd jr???? thats right his pops
George Benton & Nicolino Locche long before Floyd and Toney
Floyd wasn't even the first in his family.
I like how you favor Kovalev and Stevenson at the same time.

I find that the jab is a good basic punch, but if you don't know how to throw it, it might not work for you.
I find that the left hook can be used to hurt your opponent, but if you don't know how to use it, or don't have a left arm, then it won't work for you.
I believe that airplanes are a quick mode of cross-continental travel, but if you don't have the money to buy a ticket, then it might not work for you.
I believe the philly shell ...
See?
