This term seems to get thrown around a lot on here, but there is a difference between ATG and Hall of famers.. All time greats are far and few
Hopkins
Mayweather
Manny
Roy Jones(yea he is still active)
Wlad
IMO these are the only active all time greats and it was and is an honor to have witnessed them
Hopkins
Pacquiao
Mayweather
Marquez
Rigondeaux and Martinez are two guys I'd like to include as "unofficial" greats that may never be in that sort of discussion due to the quality of their available opposition. Ward is on his way, we'll have to see what else he accomplishes but I feel good about his chances.
Just saying. Some people seem to think he's so great but his resume says otherwise
His resume says otherwise? He's one of the best of this era and that's undeniable.
We are talking about current ATG who are also active. How the hell could u have ward and especially rigo an ATG right now, is beyond me.
Also to the guy earlier, never compare vitali to ALI..... sorry lol
How the hell did it come to this? As you obviously understand ATG status is confered by the fans and the pundits of the future...we can perhaps postulate that the most consistantly dominant boxers of the last coupla decades belong there, but when people start placing guys halfway through their carers in ATG ranks it's clear that the discussion has lost all meaning.
Ward, Rigo, both fantastic fighters, but come back in ten years.
are you seriously comparing Ali to Vitali...Ali's resume is sick he is a 3 time LINEAL CHAMPION and has a great resume
Yes. I definitely am.
Muhammad Ali had an incredible resume and is one of the most recognizable figures in boxing today. He is an All-Time-Great because we all remember how great he was and is. Do you think he's an icon simply because he was a good boxer?
George Foreman also tussled with the same competition and annihilated much of Ali's competition as well. He came back to become the oldest heavyweight champion ever, in a Rocky-esque upset story. After all that, we still don't mention Foreman under the same breath as Ali.
It's because Ali was a political activist. He was controversial and he changed the shape of American culture with his flamboyancy and direct opposition to the Vietnam war. He went from "legendary boxer" to "all-time-great cultural icon" because of that.
While we don't know what's in store for Vitali yet; depending on what he does, he might be the face of political change. He might be the next Obama (an icon of hope or whatever) of Ukraine for all we know. If he transcends boxing, then yeah, he totally would be an all-time-great for what he's done both inside and outside the ring.
what you do as a amature is a great and is icing on the cake, what you do as a pro in the end is what counts. when people read off the legacy of SRL, the amatuer background comes last... its icing on the cake. bottom line is rigo has 12 fights or something. it's ridiculous to me to call him an ATG. ward i think will be a future atg.
I agree you have to do something as a Pro. Which I believe Rigo has done... I mean he is Arguably top P4P as far as his skillset, Lineal Champ, and all this with less than 15 fights under his belt.
The question was who are our current ATG's. My opinion is my opinion. I truly believe Ward and Rigondeaux are ATG's
Lomachenko is 400-1 in amateur bouts. he's close
I'm looking forward to seeing how Loma does in the pros, but there's a reason all the names mentioned are guys nearing the end of distinguished pro careeers, even some of the very best guys in the sport currently aren't even in contention. We're talking about career achievements, not potential.
We haven't got the faintest idea, right now, how any of the top prospects of today will appear to the fans of 2050, yet alone an outstanding debutante.
Ward has not lost a fight since 1998, and has captured an Olympic Gold Medal. In less then 25 fights he established himself as THE Super Middleweight Champion and there is no argument that he beat everyone that was anyone in or around his weight. Rigondeaux is a 2 time Olympic Gold Medalist and 7 time National Champion who became the undisputed champ in less than 15 fights. Literally no one wants to fight him and no one has the skill to even make the fight exciting bc they are schooled over and over... I really do not see how they aren't considered top 100 ATG's. Maybe not lower than 85-100 but definitely ATG's

If you read his post he mentioned historical impact outside the ring as a factor. You don't necessarily define 'ATG' just by fighting resume. Guys like Jack Johnson, Joe Louis and Ali were cultural icons and societal pattern breakers which also benefited to their 'ATG' status. All-time great influence on the sport as a whole one could argue.
too me, i think wlad's got some work to do to reach ATG status. im not sure what he can do though, someone should make a thread about that "what can wlad do to reach ATG" lol. also yes i agree about the impact on society being part of one's legacy. although i think your work in the ring is the ultimate deciding factor.....

Lol... how you figure? Bc he knocked out Stevens? Adama? Oh I got it now it's bc he beat Rosado:boxing:
No because he's a threat to anybody in between 154 - 175. That's ATG material for you right there.
I think Allan Green is a borderline...
Froch's ATG legacy-defining win over Bute will be remembered for centuries to come, up there w/Kessler v. Siaca. :boxing:
no mentions of darnell boone??? he rocked both kovalev and dropped ward. auto GOAT, his resume is ATG stats

Current Active ATG's:
Ward
Froch
Kessler
Dawson
Edwin Rodriguez

He lost his last fight.
Really I could have swore he beat Murray? Messed up knee and all.... Regardless what you think the judges awarded the win to Martinez who had a torn ACL.
