Leonard was a 5'10 1/2 full fledged welterweight, one of the best ever. Yeah he traded with Duran. Whitaker couldnt hold SRL's jockstrap at WW.
Nobody is denying Pea has skills, but once Duran lands its over. Pea is a lightweight and not even big in that weight class.
An old pernell took shots from oscar and Tito.. I think he would be able to stay upright vs duran
MIKE TRAINER GOT THE LAST LAUGH!
With Duran somewhere over 200 lbs., this Leonard’s guy Mike Trainer learned after sending a spy to Panama to verify the weighty rumors, Trainer offered Duran $8 million, eclipsing the $1.5 million he made beating Leonard in June. It was now late in September 1980 and Trainer told Duran’s people that if they wanted the $8 million, he had to fight Leonard on November 25th. With around seven weeks to train, Duran shed the weight but never really got in fighting shape. As a result of this, and Duran’s people not reading the contract Trainer had prepared, the ring side was at least 22 by 22 feet, some say 24 feet. It looked more like somebody’s backyard, not a boxing ring as Leonard danced and dazzled Duran for the most part.
Damn shame....
But duran looked so good in montreal because SRL decided not to box and stand and trade,, much like bradley did with ruslan,,,,
pernell and floyd would not stand and trade with duran and would box him
Duran looked so good in Montreal because he wasn't 200 lbs. before the fight, drinking and doing lines off stripper's titties. Like in the rematch.
it was a one sided pts decision.
Pretty much all of his fights were one sided pts decisions. That was his style.
I like Julio Cesar Chavez but that fight wasn't razor close at all. Julio won 2 or 3 rounds at most.
Do you mean the Azumah Nelson fight? What about it? It was a pretty one-sided affair.
it was a one sided pts decision. But Nelson landed some dirty body shots and walked him down, wasnt ever hurt. Put up a good fight. It was a decent fight actually.
My point is he struggled to keep a featherweight off of him. I even look at the Chavez fight as razor close, often hyped as a robbery but very close and competitive.

At light weight duran deals with whitaker. for one reason and one reason alone, Pea couldt keep Duran off him.
speed is even, power is lopsidedly in Durans favor, strength in Durans favor, skill...yes..in Durans favor. Ring savvy and defense go to Whitaker. Being a southpaw is a plus too.
Duran comes at you for 15 rounds he'd catch Pea and that would be it. i mean look at the fight FW Nelson gave Pea.
whitaker giving Prime Oscar a close fight doesnt mean anything, The Duran before no mas smashes De La Hoya.
I don't think Duran crushes him but he forces the fight and back Whitaker up all night. Duran lands more and harder punches and wins a ud. Whitaker's good chin and defense let him finish the fight on his feet but he loses in my opinion.
The 1980 Montreal version at 147 beats Whitaker who would have been smothered by Duran. That Duran also stops Mayweather mid to late.

Whitakers downfall was with taller bigger fighters, Whitaker beats Duran and possibly any WW today
What makes you say that,,, he beat alot of bigger fighters, and argueably beat oscar,, tito was the first guy to clearly beat whittaker, but by that time, whittaker was coked up and on the slide
Very tough fight to call,, you can make arguments for either guy,,,,
its a 50/50 fight if there ever was one.........
Style wise i would say that pernell has the best style to fluster duran and might be enough to get a close SD
