We often talk about great commentators, and often a fighter can serve well as an expert commentator as they often have angles and information that your normal broadcaster simply doesn't possess.
Of course, I'm talking about the likes of Roy Jones jr, Antonio Tarver and more recently, Paulie Malignaggi. I think Ray Leonard have done a decent job the few times I've heard him on EPIX.
Now, let's touch on the topic of the worst examples.
Lennox Lewis:
- The emotionless voice of the former heavyweight champion could put a glass eye to sleep. Golden nuggets like "yeah, he throws a good jab" and "he should focus a little more" were just some of the much too frequent analyses of the boxing game you could expect to hear from him. That, and comparing Andre Dirrell to Muhammad Ali are just some of his esteemed accomplishments in the boxing commentary booth.
George Foreman:
- Now, I actually belong to the people who thought 'Big' George was an asset to the HBO boxing broadcast team. However, that was more because of his immediate excitement should somebody land a right hand. Merchant, the ever cynic, would calm him down only for George to say: "He only needs one more right hand and that guy is out of there" - despite said fighter often being completely fine. Loved it.
LM:George, I wanna ask you something, when Lewis comes inside, you say he doesn't have it there, but he's been showing he has it there with Holyfield in these last few rounds. When he stands back, you say he doesn't have the heart to get in there. Now which is it?
GEORGE: You know when Holyfield guards his ear with his glove he puts it ALL behind his ear that makes it so that Lewis can come up with those uppercuts!
Andre Ward:
- This recent addition to HBO boxing, was met with initial intrigue. 'Andre Ward', he's p4p one of the best out there - he knows everything there is to know about boxing. He must be great.' Well, it's like his fights. Sure, you'll get excited that he's fighting a Carl Froch or Chad Dawson, but as soon as it starts you know you're in for a long, boring night. It didn't help that he called GGG the #3 guy at middleweight
Amir Khan:
- I like Khan and consider myself a fan. But damn, he should stay away from commentating. Or media in general. Everything he says can be turned into a quote in a newspaper and get laughed at on the forums.
Khan just after the Mayweather-Ortiz fight: "Mayweather only fights old guys who are past their best."
Who do you think is the worst? Any quotes are not only welcome, but encouraged.
He offered little-to-no analysis of the game itself but his enthusiasm and after-fight smile made it all worth it.
Lampley provides plenty of enthusiasm for the whole crew, and if the boxer was beating the puncher I didn't find him to be that enthusiastic he actually seemed upset that the power guy couldn't make something happen while talking nonsense about the power guy still being dangerous (B-Hop-Trinidad for example).
George "after the fighters the referee is the most important person in the ring" Foreman
He was kind of funny and he was as consistent as a fine Swiss time piece with his love of power punchers so it was always easy to see where he was going to come from in a fight so I didn't mind him much but he provided very little wisdom for a guy who had been around as along as him.

I saw that the other day.
Not only does Jim Watt deserve to be named commentator of the year. He also deserves to be named human being of the year.
When I read some of those phrases and imagine him saying it, it just gets me so much...hilarious, ahhh what a legend - any personal favourites?
Roy Jones is #1 worst.
I would like him more if he learned how to speak English.
Dude, off topic but why do the basketball players slugging it out in your sig look like Tommy Hearns and Chris Byrd to me :lol1:

I am gonna keep entertaining NSB with this photo.
THIS is why Jim Watt is both the ATG, P4P BEST AND WORST commentator in the sport.

Lennox Lewis it ain't even close. The only words he could say properly were absolutely and definitely, but besides that he couldn't even form sentences. See mayweather judah... The fight is better without the sound.
Haha

I dislike and disagree with your assumption and premise that he is a great commentator who adds to the experience.
Jim Watt is an absolute legend, I don't want to hear anything else!
"He's hurrrt! He's Huurrrt!!

I remember when Lennox was giving his breakdown of the keys to victory for one of the fighters that was on HBO that night. His words were...
"Well....uhmmm....he has to.....you know.....throw some good.....great punches....uhmmm yeah definitely"
You can't buy that level of insight.
Haha
That kind of insight knowledge can only be built up with years upon years of experience at the top top level.
At least he had charisma. Lennox Lewis was just the dullest commentator you could ever imagine.

I would often wonder how George Foreman ever boxed let alone became Heavyweight Champion of the World with some of the retarded sh1t he'd come out with.

I would say Khan and Ward are the worst on this poll. I like Foreman I miss the old guy. Lennox was ok but he kept saying absolutely and definitely through out the fight.
Of all the guys that got a sustained run as a commentator, Lennox was by far the worst.
I don't remember him bringing anything to any fight. At all. He was just there because they hoped he would do a George Foreman and jump back in the ring.
