Momma said if I didn't have anything nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all.
Death is something we should just respect and let be. If we have any negative opinions, we should reserve them and respect the person's death at least for the sake of his loved ones.
The guy was a crooked. Stripped Martinez from his WBC belts to give one to Chavez and the other one to Canelo. Of course that its a business move. Since Chavez and Canelo make more money than Martinez the fee is higher.

@GoldenGloveLove......I have some bad news for you, his son Mauricio (who has been apparently running the shop for a few years because Don Jose had been in decline) is the dead-cert favourite to run the joint.
If little Bambino Sulaiman ends-up being an enlightened reformer then I will apologise; but I reckon that we'll just get Don Jose lite and with the same cynical approach to fixed rankings, rancid judging decisions and blatant favouritism for promoters who kowtow to the WBC.
Anyone's death is never a good thing.
ya tell that to a terminally ill patient in unbearable pain.. why you think Switzerland legalized euthanasia.. Sulaiman was probably in pain before he died, you want the man to go on suffering forever.. now thats heartless man.. dying can save you from a whole lot of unnecessary pain and discomfort..
For every Don King or Jose Suleiman that is struck down, two rise in their place. Corruption in boxing is like the broomsticks in Fantasia. Just look at the establishment of VADA. Prize fighting is, has been, and will always be horribly corrupt.
Can you explain this one for me? I don't get this example at all
Jose was a man, a father, and a husband. Why the hell would you make an ignorant ass thread that would suggest that his death is a good thing. I wish death on no man. I would love to see Arum step away from the sport, but not if that requires the man to die. Show some damn compassion to a man who helped to build the sport of boxing to what it is today. Granted we may want things to change but between certain promotional companies, and we may even feel as though some things should be different within the WBC, but Jose did a great job as an ambassador to boxing. R.I.P. Jose
I said on a pro level, meaning in a professional capacity.. dont get that mixed up with his personal life..

No. There will always be a replacement for a problem, real or imagined, always.
I'm surprised by some of these replies.
Listen, I never knew the guy but from what I saw FROM THE OUTSIDE he didn't seem like the nicest person. If you know what I mean. With that said, who's to say any of you guys wouldn't do the same if you were in his position? We're aways quick to judge without thinking, what if it was me instead? And save me the bs that you would do differently cause none of us would know that for sure unless we were in that situation.

He was an awful person and dying doesn't change that. One of the worst obstructionists in the entire sport and deserves no respect whatsoever. He was a corrupt, greedy, hypocritical, melodramatic egotist with no respect for fighters or boxing and should be remembered exactly that way.
He screwed over more fighters than most promoters and/or lawyers will ever dream about doing. His throwing random token gestures to look like a nice man to fighters that colored inside the lines notwithstanding. There is not one negative thing that can affect boxing because of his death except that the next devil we don't know may be worse. I am genuinely glad to have outlived this one. No matter what I've done in life, no matter what wrong I have committed, I've always said "Well, at least I'm not Jose Sulaiman." and I've felt better about it.
Anyway, RIP. I'm sure he was a nice man.
