I just watched Roy Jones vs Bernard Hopkins and I can't give Bernard a single round. I have the first round as a draw, but after that Roy controlled the fight and Bernard only landed one clean punch in the 8th round the entire fight. Whats your take?
Note: Harold letterman had it 10-0 going into the final 2 where I think he mercy gave Hop the last two rounds. I say no way, Roy won the last two as well. He beat hop in the fashion Floyd beat Conelo accept easier, but Bernard was 10x more game than conelo and much better.
I think that boxing fans don't get upset enough about B-Hop/Roy not getting made after Hop beat Trinidad. That was THE Mega fight to make.
Exactly because Hopkins didn't want it when Roy was still himself.
60/40 was a damn good deal at the time seeing as how Roy was p4p#1 and already had a win over BHop.
Ok man whatever you say. Nearly everyone here says it was a competitive fight with Jones winning clearly, while you said it was a shut out. Ancient history anyway between two young fighters who didn't even reach their primes on an undercard.
I was right there till I re-watched it. Everyone saying 3-4 rounds is saying "I think I remember Bernard winning 3-4 rounds" Thats being said because it was so odd to see Roy not absolutely toy with guys. In this fight he actually had to buckle down and fight like a real boxer. Now in hignsight we have absolute respect and appreciation for Bernards greatness and we understand that Roy did fight this guy as if he was fighting a top 3 middle of all-time. When you watch the fight and just watch it as two greats rather than looking at it a "Roy aint toying with this guy so he's not doing well" you realize that in this one true real fight, that Roy won every round even though he wasn't able to Toy with bernard. From a pure boxing purist standpoint, Roy did not loose a round to Bernard even though Bernard was game the entire fight.
If you watch Marquez Floyd, you'll see that Marquez had more success hitting Floyd than Bernard had hitting Roy. You will see Marquez in Floyd face the entire fight. The fights are truly mirror images of each other.

Bernard didn't want to give up that shine right after just getting it.

I'm not sure if it was a shutout or not but I couldn't pick a round that Hopkins clearly won.
I'm sorry, I know asking you to watch the fight again takes time, but I have watched the fight twice in the last two days and I cannot give Bernard a round. Yes he was there in Roys face all night, but he got outlander with more effective punches by Roy every Round, thus again, I cannot give him a single round. There is not one round where Bernard landed more, or more effective punches. Meanwhile Roy landed flush shots to Bernards head every round. Bernard landed one clean shot in round 8. It was a domination in that Bernard could not win a single round, although he was competitive, and he kept coming, but he kept eating shots without landing anything.
Such a boring fight but I might give it a re-score and see what I get.
Roy won the fight without question but it wasn't a shut out and it wasn't a domination. Roy-Toney is what you call a domination.
And as for Hopkins being a MW, he was obviously a MW he fought there for like over a decade.
He could have moved up to 168 but he'd have been smaller than a lot of fighters there at the time.

I literally just watched round 11 lol Hopkins was digging into the body in the center of the ring, consistently throughout the round watch it for yourself its on YouTube. Lol @ owned
Got laugh at you again. In the entire 11th round he hit Roy with one body shot while they were in the center of the ring with 55 seconds to go in the round. Please enlighten me with all the many times he consistently was digging Roy's body in the center of the ring. Please show the time clock as your proof otherwise your just proving to be a very funny guy.
Owned? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaha

hahahaha. The last two minutes of round ten, Roy is hitting Bernard at will, and yes toying with him, making sport of him, giving the fans a show at Bernards expense. He's following Roy around like a lost puppy and getting tagged. That raps up 10 straight rounds of Roy doing Bernard and then you get hype and think Bernard figured him out in the 11th. Wow bro! Like I said, Bernard had absolutely nothing to worry Roy in this fight. Those body punches from Bernard were allowed to happen. You owned yourself.

Here ya go.
Why would one not consider muscle with size? Mike Tyson was like 5'10.
6-6'1 is not a huge frame for MW that's the same size as Taylor and Pavlik for example. Pretty typical.
If Bernard "melted" down to 160 he wouldn't be able to successfully do it for 15 years or whatever it was. Hell, the man weighed as low as 156 a couple times and 157 numerous times. He stayed in shape all year round and lived a healthy lifestyle.
Roy wasn't a natural LHW. Bernard did have to meltdown to make MW. Hopkins lived like monk & was on a strict diet during his MW campaign. It's well documented how he lived. Why do you think he had to pace himself so much in his fights? Making MW wasn't that easy I imagine & as he got older it was even more difficult more than likely. That's why his stamina started suffering as you saw in the Taylor fights. Bernard was a natural LHW my man, that's a fact. He dropped down to 160 to maximize his physical gifts.
Hopkins was fresh out of prison when he made his pro debut in 1988. He then took two years off to work on his craft and got connected with a real trainer.
Of course JAMES TONEY said Hopkins ate like a model, anything less than 7 Whoppers with cheese from Burger King and large fries was considered going on a diet to Toney.
Hopkins and Roy were both middleweights at the time. Also I think Bhops body frame is naturally leaner than Jones who went all the way up to heavyweight; I think Jones was always more muscular or able to carry more weight. But that meant nothing when they fought at 160 21 years ago!
Anyways, topic at hand - Jones won CLEARLY, but it wasn't a shut out nor did he dominate. It was a competitive fight with Hopkins finding success late, especially with the overhand right. Looking back, this fight was largely uneventful. Both men fought cautiously neither taking too many chances, but Jones did more to win more rounds. This was a big learning experience for both fighter as neither were in their primes yet.
I hear what you're saying but Hopkins still is/was the bigger man. 6-6'1 frame that melted his body down to make MW. Roy always had good muscular definition but don't confuse that with size. You saw what Hopkins looked like when he finally moved to LHW against Tarver right? A natural LHW which was his natural weight.
Haha ok! Watch round 11 and see Hopkins going to work attacking and digging into the body, that continued in round 12. Round 10 Hopkins landed some nice over hand rights and Jones landing some of his own and edging out that round but it was very competitive. Marquez sure as hell didn't do any of that to Mayweather come on now.
The only time he hit Jones to the Body was when Jones was leaning on the ropes not moving. If you ever watched a Jones fight, thats the only time anyone ever hit him, and he was content with giving that up becomes you his abs were steal and he took that time to rest. Great Hop did what every fighter did when Roy laid on the ropes. On letterman's scorecard he was being blanked up to that point and Roy new he had the fight won already. Roy gave him that, lol thinking that Bernard took that from him. Besides that he landed one clean shot to Roys face the whole fight in the eigth. Bernard got owned bro. He couldn't do anything to roy that Roy didn't let happen. Look at the body language of both. By round 6 Bernard is hesitant and Roy is in his confident crouch. Marquez hit floyd in the face more than Bernard hit Roy. Roy always gives up body shots on the ropes, he doesn't mind them, its the face shots he doesn't like. Roys face was immaculate after the fight. Bernard had lumps after round 4-5.

I didn't see the fight that way at all. Hopkins presented Roy with less problems than Marquez presented Floyd. After about round 5 Roy has no worry at all about hopkins and he starts backing Hopkins up and hopkins is reluctant to throw unless roy allowed himself to go to the ropes. Hop had absolutely nothing for Roy. Roy would of beaten him 10/10 times 10 rounds to 2
