What do you guys think would help boxing become a mainstream sport again? Like back in the old days where everyone watched or listened to the fight. Ideas?
True that, mayne. True that. Sh*t I was talking to this dude I grew up with a while back and was telling him to check out the Garcia/Mathysse fight, and he was like, "Who the f**k are they? The must suck since I haven't heard of them". And I was just shaking my head. This dude is the prime example of a casual. The only guys that he knows in boxing is Floyd, Manny, and whomever Floyd and Manny fight, lmao. Then one day he showed up when me and a few friends were watching Donaire/Rigondeaux and the first thing that douche said was "these dudes must be bums if this sh*t ain't on PPV".

I've heard that a lot... That's the first sign of a noob. And that type of statement (calling them bums) irritates me even more. In my head I'm like "those two bums are the ones who ****ed your mother" but in real life I sigh while explaining with a disgusted face. Casuals are annoying, specially when they start acting like they know about the sport and or take out their phone to take a selfie with the TV "watching some boxing pow pow I love this sport" lol. You get the idea. Oh and the ones who pull out the only 3-4 names they know and say they should fight disregarding weight divisions. :poke:
very true, itd be hard to get a return, it would certainly shake things up though. having things under one promoter would make life sooooo much simpler in boxing. Boxing in it self is bigger than UFC(when you account for everything involved), just imagine how big boxing would get if their was only 1 professional promotion. manny and floyd would of had their third fight by now
Man it would be an amazing godsend for the sport if someone or some entity was willing to take a chance like that. The #1 thing is just being able to get the fights the fans want 100% of the time. That's what it's all about. All the other stuff...getting boxing mainstream and all that, I mean that would be cool and all but at the end of the day I (and all of us here) just want to see the best fights. Period. No more ducking and avoiding fighters so dudes can keep their zeros or not fighting guys because they don't have enough of a fan base. The best match ups. Period.
One can dream, eh?
I think its hard to turn a casual especially one who's never even watched ANY combat sport whatsoever to see the "magic" of boxing. Unless guys are landing 35%+ of their shots each it may be hard to entertain.
Some people already get to booing after one round. It's much easier to enjoy boxing when you know a bit of what the fighters may have in their mind to do in the ring. Truth be told, not a lot of people can just name things a fighter should do in the ring. Unlike other sports where you can grow up as a little kid and play, you can figure things out going on the football field or whatever.
Enough money can buy anything but nobody out there in their right mind would do it because they'd never see the return on it. Boxing is just so niche for anybody to take a chance like that on.
And it would be a huge number because both TR & GB have both publicly stated that they're fine making the millions upon millions they're making now to change the current business model one iotavery true, itd be hard to get a return, it would certainly shake things up though. having things under one promoter would make life sooooo much simpler in boxing. At the root of it. Casuals don't know who's good and who's not. There's no damn ranking system.
They don't know who to follow. Who has promise. Who's next up for the title shot. Who's the 2nd best in the division. Who's the 3rd best in the division.
They can't follow the story line of boxing like a regular sport, because there are way too many promoters with different fighters, and it's a cluster **** of names and faces that no one knows who the hell they are.
This is true, however when you finally take the time to gather the whole story, there s no story that compares. I don't know why more chicks don't like boxing. It's a huge ****ing drama fest, from the fighters, to their families and lives, to the promoters and managers, refs and judges, sanction bodies and commissions. The story never ends.
In the grand scheme of thing, boxing is to real for people. I think they ignore how life is, what people are truly thinking, and what people will do out of greed. Boxers, promoters, etc say whatever the **** they want without penalty. It's a dirty sport and a dirty world that a lot of people these days don't understand and can't connect with. It's 3rd world to them.
Rules changes, need to make fights more exciting and stop letting fighters kill large parts of rounds holding and/or moving and just waiting. That will turn viewers off and kill any chance of the sport making back main stream. Scoring, has to be addressed also think the close scoring too shady and unclear how fights are scored. Also hate when some one sided fights go too long, fight just drags cause mostly losing fighter just wants to make it too the end and fighter winning takes fewer risk. I don't know when the last rule changes were made but sports always try to improve their product, time boxing did the same.
Not in our lifetime I'm sure. It is regarded as being too brutal to be regarded as a genuine sport any more. The BMA has been trying to have boxing outlawed for around 40-50 years. Kids lounge far too much in front of TV's or.and computers.... Those who don't mind being punched on the nose are becoming fewer. And there are too many alternate ways of making a less strenuous living.
The supply of potential boxers is becoming more limited although there is likely a temporary upturn because of the more open Eastern Europe, and there may be some surge from China. Bit I feel we are destined to be a sport with only a hard-core following.
How many on this site....who all blow pretty hard about "fighters" and "quitters" and etc. have ever actually boxed in competitions....?
More tie ins with MMA perhaps.
A change in fan culture; no other sport has the aggressive put-down of other fans YDKSOB style - with other sports, fans are happy to have casual folks watch the game or match with them.
I like it just the way it is. It feels even better to be a fan of boxing... It's YOUR sport. No teeny boppers ruining the sport's image. I like the intimate feeling it currently has... It is a worldwide sport of course but it feels like a small family of fans compared to other mainstream sports.

And then to top it off. If fighter A is ranked #2, and fighter B is ranked #3. The casual would be like, "ummmmmm, why aren't they fighting next to see who faces the champ?" Not knowing about the promotional wars.
Boxing is fuggin chaos. Someone mentioned that boxing is a rogue sport, and that's exactly what it is.

If boxing actually took on some of the issues facing the sport, that give it a "black eye" so to speak, I think that could persuade some to give it a second look. PEDs, horrible scoring, horrible refs, corruption by promoters, and any number of other issues fans feel like aren't being addressed due to lack of regulation. The perception around boxing is that its a rogue sport with little oversight and to a certain extent that's true.
Who the fvck wants to be vested in a sport where people like Arum, Haymon, and Schaefer are allowed to do business in the dark essentially and use the public airwaves to misdirect?
Marketing and advertising, it's how virtually every successful product reaches it's peak revenue potential. They should start focusing on the fitness aspect of boxing and market it with fitness in mind, not just it's brutality.
If they plugged at with the message that it's a sport which requires a very high level of fitness so your health can actually be greatly improved by just training in a boxing gym, that might attract the growing number of fitness fanatics in this increasingly health-conscious world we're living in.
One of the things about boxing which puts certain people off is it's brutality and potentially life-threatening scenarios in the ring. It needs to be marketed with a bit less focus on slow-motion knockdowns, but more focus on stamina, agility, head movement, ducking and diving, footwork, feints.. just to demonstrate how demanding and challenging it can be from a physical perspective and how it could improve health.
But don't take away the knockdowns and knockouts completely because that's part of the sport which also attracts many people.
True, elite talent. None of that, "he's really good, but he can't hold a candle to Sugar Ray, or prime Tyson".
We need those genuine Sugar Ray/Tyson/Ali/Ray Robinson talents. None of this, good enough for our generation type fighters.
So far, we have Manny, Floyd, old ass Hopkins, and Wlad that are transcendent talents.
THAT'S IT!
GGG's the man and all, but he's not a transcendent, once in a lifetime talent. Neither is Danny. Neither is Lucas. Neither is Thurman.
If Sergio was Mexican, shiiiiiiit.
for someone to buy all the major promotions make it into a league like NFL, have their own sanctioning body and everything.
I dont see that happening though, is it even possible to buy promotions like top rank and Golden Boy?
Neither of those guys would sell at anything close to an equitable price, I dont see how someone could get a return.
I am starting to think the networks should be forcing competitive fights, they are the ones who are paying for the content.
