I have just watched 7 of Winkys fights the past few days and his skill was crazy. That shell defense was almost impenetrable in his prime. The guy held the great Tito Trinidad to 54 punches landed and 10% through an entire fight that is so crazy that I wouldntve believed it if I hadn't seen it myself. This had me thinking of who the greatest 154 of all time is. This weight wasn't around until 2nd half of the 20th century so the list of fighters isn't that long. The only guy Id have to put in front of him would have to be Tommy Hearns. But Hearns wasn't at 154 all his career like Winky ( Winky didn't move to 160 until 2005 and that's about the time he took long lay offs). I was just curious what u guys thought about this topic.
What's so good about Wright then in your eyes?
What makes his resume good in comparison to Norris?
I don't think their resumes are all that much different in the purest sense, but I think Wright proved to be a better fighter and Norris resume doesn't trump Wrights either, he had some of the most fortunate and flattering opposition for his reign.
There is no doubt in my mind that Wright in his prime was one of the greatest 154 pounders of all time. I thought he beat Vargas and that was before Trinidad gave Vargas the beating that turned Vargas into a fighter that was still good but never near as good as he was before he fought Trinidad. Wright easily beat Trinidad at 160 after Trinidad lost to Hopkins. Who would win between Trinidad and Wright when Trinidad was the 154 pound champ I am not sure. He easily beat Mosley twice and both Mayweather and Oscar turned down Wright's challenge to fight and I think they both would have lost to him.
You've got that last part mixed up. Winky actually turned those two down not the other way round.
Prime Winky vs prime Tito at 154 would really be an awesome fight shame that couldn't have been made sooner if all the stars were aligned.

Is that what I said? Don't think I did.
I don't think Taylor was shot. Well passed it obviously and the Norris fight the final nail in the coffin.
Castro went on to win a title, Q.Taylor went on to win a title, decent solid fighter. There's other's instances I'm forgetting.
Norris beat some good solid contenders during his reign. Underwhelming fights aswell. I don't really rate Norris highly but he's obviously one of the top Jr Middleweights.
What are you saying? That he isn't?
No, that he isn't better Wright.
Winky was so boring..it ain't funny

Winky, to me, was not a great boxer. He was a great defender because that's all he did. He comes out of his shell like a turtle, fires one jab and goes right back in for the better part of each round. Against Tito, you can see he was afraid of Trinidad's power that's why he covered up so much. The truth is Tito is not a defense-first fighter; so he is not hard to hit. Winky was afraid to engage 'cause Tito would have knocked him out. I suspect he doesn't even have a good chin. It's hard to tell because he's always in defensive mode. Against Bhop, he clearly exhibited his lack of boxing skills. His plan was to fight more and take more risks to entertain but that night he show me what a lousy boxer he was. Bhop outboxed him. He looked totally uncomfortable in offensive mode. He could barely capitalize on Bhop's mistakes.
Winky Wright depends on the skill of his opponent to carry a fight. When his opponent takes a break from hitting his defensive shell he pops out of it and scores with a few jabs. In the end it will always be a UD for him...never a knockout or an exciting win.
Winky frustrates boxers with his style that's why he hardly gets fights. He has the perfect style for Paul Williams who throws a million punches per round. With PW, Winky gets hit constantly whether he's covering up or coming out. PW's volume gets him. He just had no answer for PW 'cause he's a lousy boxer.
So Curry, Leonard and Taylor were good wins now? How many top ranked contenders that went on to do well exactly?
Is that what I said? Don't think I did.

I think it's unfair to consider all the past prime fighters he fought as "washed up". Not all of them were "washed up".
He beat a lot of top ranked contenders and fighters who went on to do well aswell.
His resume is definitely better, as far as I'm concerned atleast.
You might say Terry Norris doesn't have a great resume and tends to be overrated at times and I'd certainly agree with that but the same can be said for Winky Wright.
You mean to tell me you don't think Norris is one of the greatest Jr Middleweights?

Not really, like I said his resume is filled with washed up names and nobodies. Winky was just a better fighter and far more consistent, especially when you compare their losses.

Don't think Winky was better than Norris. Not sure who'd win H2H.
His resume at Jr Middleweight is better than Winky Wright's.

Not really, he was pretty basic and not particularly athletically talented when measured against the best.
There was nothing basic about winky. His style was refined and unique.
You beat me to it Bat, I was going to post that link.
He became relatively popular with casuals in 2004-2007 but did not capitalize on that. Turning down fights with De La Hoya(Who he'd have likely beaten), Floyd Mayweather Jr(Coming up from JWW to 154), and Jermain Taylor rematch, all 3 because of money issues. Not a very good business man at all. Having a win over DLH would have been great for him because he had beaten Trinidad and Mosley, so adding DLH in there would have done a lot for his popularity.
It's like Cotto fighting Martinez instead of Canelo.
For what? His tour of washed up names and nobodies? After getting chopped down by Jackson, Norris probably had one of the most fortunate careers ever. Winky was a better fighter and would've beat him too.

Hmm, perhaps up there. Only because the division isn't very deep.
The greatest is Mike McCallum followed by Norris and Hearns. Not really sure how the rest would pan out.
