After dominating 12 rounds for a unanimous decision during which he overcame an overweight fighter who employed roughhouse tactics in Edwin Rodriguez, Andre Ward was asked about his thoughts concerning the sport's pound-for-pound list, and, in particular, his position in the No. 2 spot behind Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Ward is rated No. 2 in THE RING's pound-for-pound list ahead of WBO welterweight titleholder Tim Bradley.
"From a competitive standpoint, I would love to have the No. 1 spot, but Floyd is the No. 1 guy in boxing right now. He has done this and been successful and competed at the highest level since I've been a kid and since I've been an amateur fighter. I'm not the No. 1 fighter in the world. Floyd Mayweather is the No. 1 fighter in the world," said Ward (27-0, 14 knockouts), who ended an absence of 14 months that included surgery on his right shoulder against Rodriguez (24-1, 16 KOs).
"Unless he retires, or something happens, or maybe he gets beat, well, then, maybe I'll take that spot. I'm content being No. 2 right now. I pay homage to the guys who have gone before me. Floyd Mayweather has helped to mold my style. I've been watching Floyd Mayweather fights all day today leading up to this fight. These guys have helped me to get to where I'm at in more ways than they realize, so I pay homage to these guys, and I respect these guys. He deserves that top spot."
floyd is clearly #1 fighter in the world but i think he gets leapfrogged in the next 24 months, if floyd can only land broner, khan, alexander type fights,
and ward lands and beats ggg, chavez jr, froch 2, stevenson or kovolez, maybe hopkins,,
ATM ward has bigger fights on the horizon than floyd who has already gone thru his big fights with shane, cotto, canelo
So I guess you respect Roy Jones for saying he's still the best P4P, and you respect Toney for saying he's still the best heavyweight? So you respect delusional fighters over honest, humble fighters. Got it.
Those dudes are corpses. Nobody takes them seriously, hell they don't take themselves serious. Good job on the reach though. You are a grade A poster
I dont understand why you're in the red, man. You're a good poster.
If you want a high rep like it actually means something; say Floyd is bum and Manny is the greatest and Margarito is an ATG and green K will reign from the heavens
If you aren't first, your last.
If I'm Andre - I'm like "eff that dude, I'm the best right now"
Sheesh - how can you just brag at being a runner-up. I mean this is competition. Floyd says he's the greatest ever - better than ring legends. Is it true, no, but damn - respect for believing in himself to say it out loud.
You can be humble when you retire - until then - everyone is a target

@ JmH Reborn... I would green k u, but I for some reason I can't even quote u or add reputation for u...
Anyhow, what u said is spot on!
Not sure - but I appreciate the sentiment.
That's like Peyton Manning admitting that Tom Brady is the best and he's content for being second best
Ugh. Andre drops a tiny bit in the respect department. You gotta take what's yours bro.
Very humble of him to give respect where it is due and to admit that he tries to learn from those that came before.
I can never understand why some people hate Ward.
I don't know why either. Other than his fighting style, there's really not much to hate about him.

I'm not going to argue that Mayweather isn't p4p #1, but I don't care how unpopular this opinion is: Andre Ward is every bit as good as Floyd Mayweather Jr. right now.
No he's not. I love both fighters but Floyd is on another level, he's a virtuoso, Andre is more limited but he makes the best of the tools that he has.
