the dude was a great fighter n did some great stuff even if he was shaped like a baloon
but lets say he did things like a pro should do
lets say he was focused at 160 during the mid nineties
how would he fared against jones jr when healthy
and guys like hopkins, calzaghe, jermain taylor etc etc
could he have gone down as one of the best ever, he is skill wise but not resume imo
I wonder if Toney has some disorder if he was just given unlucky genes, because he seems like he loves to box but not enough to work off the fat..
Toney had low testosterone levels. Lots of boxers have this problem due to damage to the pituitary gland. It would have made it more difficult to lose fat.
I think he eventually took some supplements as well, which would have allowed him to pack on muscle and move up to the higher weights.
James would have beat B-Hop, he was just special.
Some people seem to have forgot just how great he was, he had the lot. The defence and reflexes were out of this world, his chin was iron, his counter shots were razor sharp and he did it all naturally, it was just second nature.
Even though he got fat and was lazy, we still saw more than enough examples of just how good Lights Out was.

i think he already is a first ballot HOFer, and a legit ATG,,, Toney would be successful in any era,, he was truely a gifted fighter,,
Had toney been dedicated like a hopkins or floyd,,, toney most certainly would have been a huge star
him and roy probably would have had a trilogy,,
He would spank guys like tarver, johnson, woods, hill,
Toney would have been the one guy to go to germany and lay the smackdown on michlewski
the james toney that dissected iran barkley, i would favor that fighter over anyone at 168 not named roy jones. and toney vs roy with a healthy toney is a pretty competitive fight.
Toney was a special fighter. It's really sad that he doesn't get as much recognition as he deserve. I wish he didn't fight Roy Jones, I think it took something out of him. If you were to ever label a fighter a 'throwback' it would be James Toney.
He has an ATG chin and would have posed serious problems for any Middle to Light Heavy in history.

Burger King does that to people.
toney would beat poopkins. i think he was a much better fighter at 160. hopkins wasn't as much of a technician in his early 160 days. he pressured some in addition to his boxing, and showed his chin and right handed power.
poopkins had the greater career, but toney would beat him. that's only an opinion, of course.
toney had the better chin, more refined offense @160. toney took bombs all the way to HW.
toney wasn't just some lazy guy who left MW because he wasn't motivated. he was lazy and didn't train hard for every fight, but he was also huge. he starved himself to make 160. he could never have stayed there long enough to fight jermain taylor, for example. by '05 toney was a HW. in '95 he was at 175.

If james toney stayed at middleweight he would have eventually rose up to lightheavy naturally I believe and stayed there. If he had fought Hopkins I think a middleweight Hopkins in the 90s would've beat him by decision in a great middleweight fight. Hopkins was a rough, sharp disciplined middleweight. against calzaghe he would've made look amateurish, against jermain taylor, that would've been a good fight with james toney winning by decision against a healthy james toney, against roy jones jr, well roy jones jr could do what he wanted to do in that ring and make you look silly, no matter what he would've lost to roy jones, jones was too quick and sharp and unconventional, do what he wanted:
