Am I the only person that feel like Marquez is overrated? Why is he still on top of everyone's p4p lists. There are so many fighters at 140-147 that I'd pick to beat him. I know he's a technician and a great fighter, but because of the Pacquiao fights, he gets special treatment.
Salido, Pacquiao, Barrera and who else is relevant that Marquez beat.
I'd pick Garcia, Matthysse, Rios, Alexander, Amir Khan, L. Peterson Provonikov, Guerrero, Broner, Mosley, and Rios to beat him.
I'd pick Marquez against Berto, Soto-Karass, Kell Brook, and Thurman though.
Let me know why people rate Marquez so high.
*Disclaimer I'm not discrediting Marquez, but I think he's overrated.
Are you really telling me that you'd favor JMM over Matthysse or Broner????
I'd favor Marquez over Judah, but Judah probably would beat him too. Marquez is not an ATG....he's a hall of famer though.
Ok I'm back, but Marquez is also a sore loser. The Pacquiao fights were close....but ummm who in the lower weight classes did he beat?
Katsidis? Baby Bull Diaz? Cassamayor? and Salido....a lot of people beat Salido.
JMM is a bit of a specialist in fighting Pac, yet still losing to Pac mostly. But you have to be rewarded for aiming high, so if JMM thinks he can beat someone as good as Pac he has been rewarded for taking risks and aiming high.
Floyd wouldn't fight Pac now would he so in an ideal world would get penalized for it, but doesn't.
JMM resume isn't so in depth so its hard to gauge how he would have done against others, other than Pac. But at 40 he did well against Bradley.
So JMM probably is maybe a little overated but for his age, he is top material BH styly.

What? No way man, JMM would destroy Rios, Khan, Peterson, Broner, and Mosley. These dudes are either too stationary or have a defense that is far too leaky to last with JMM (Khan). The guy is an incredible counter puncher and would hit a dude like Broner with 6 punches in a row before Broner would be able to return fire.
JMM has pop on his punches and has more experience than most of those guys combined. JMM isn't overrated at all, he has a few semi-questionable losses to Pac and one to Chris John (in Indonesia......yeah) out of 60 fights. He basically has definitive losses to Bradley, Mayweather (after jumping up 10 pounds to a weight he had never been at before), and Freddie Norwood (who was a great boxer with movement).
One of my ATGs thats for sure. http://www.picgifs.com/smileys/smileys-and-emoticons/cheers/smileys-cheers-222480.gif
lol. Got to hit the sack, bro. Talk to you later.
He has looked mediocre when fighting some of the best fighters around, being thoroughly outboxed by the likes of John and Bardley. He has struggled against Katsidis and Diaz in the best, neither of whom are world class by any stretch of the imagination.
Most had him winning against John, despite hometown judging and reffing, and he was 40 years old against Bradley, and still made it very close. Thoroughly outboxed against John though? :lol1:
Good one mate.
Every fighter struggles with lesser foes. Shall we bring up every lesser foe that all the greats have struggled with, and lost to?
Barrera vs Jones?
Morales vs Espadas?
Pac vs Sanchez?
What about Duran vs Laing?
Ali vs Spinks?
Pac vs Singsurat?
Whitaker vs Hurtado?
That's just one for each. I can think of many more that were as hard and harder for them against lesser fighters than Diaz.
The fact you bring two fights against top rated fighters/champions as if that somehow proves something just shows how little you know and how foolish you are.
JMM defiantly has Pride. Maybe a little to much. But still, people shouldn't confuse that with his ability in the ring. I mean come on...this man drinks his own pee on TV. Thats confidence.
The same pride and skill that made him what he is. The dude is a legend, bar pee drinking. lol
What the hell. You cant discredit him if you dont know how good his lower class wins were. How the hell can you call a fighter great then say hes overrated? If hes great hes great and perfectly rated. Doesnt make sense.
You forgot why he fought Pac in the first place because he was a top guy in the lower weight classes. Obviously welterweight isnt his prime divison but the fact he lost a close fight with Bradley and schooled Pac the 3rd time before KTFO the next time AT 38-40 years old is nothing short of amazing.

Who did he beat in the lower weight??
I've always said he is. He don't belong that high up on P4P lists. Not before he KOed Pac anyway.
Pacman made this fool.

Thank god, i wanted to make a similar thread but didn't. JMM is not an atg WW. He's a borderline good ww. He has had pacs number and learned to fight him, otherwise what has he done at higher weights? JMM is a good boxer maybe great, he's not an ATG fighter although maybe ATG mexican. Pac would win most. Bradley beat him. Mayweather demolished him...I could see a few more beating him at 147...is he good? Yes. Great? Maybe. ATG overall? Probably not...he gets overrated on the pac win..... he resume isn't super deep. He gets a bit too much credit imo, but it's to each individual to decide not just me, so maybe I'm wrong.
Very good post, I think Marquez has been on the cusp of being a P4P top 10 for much of the last 7-8 years, he was probably at his highest following the Pacquiao win (I actually had him at 10). But in terms of his career, minusing the Pacquiao fights, he has not done a great deal. He fought probably the worst version of Barrera of nay of his rivals.

It's the fights with Pacquiao, all of which have been very close that have garnered him so much praise and rightfully so. Is he a true great, to be ranked alongside the likes of Morales and Barrera? No. He is a very good counterpuncher with the heart of a champion? Most definitely.
I agree. :qqq:
The only reason people are saying YES is because of his constant whining about his losses. Which i have to admit is a little, much. JMM is a great fighter and warrior despite that nonsense.
l think it's a psychological defense mechanism which we must understand. lt's a pride thing that carried him to where he is now. Without it, jmm wouldn't be what he is now, surpassing barrera and morales.
Juan Manuel is the best counter puncher of this era. The has proven his staying power by staying relevant when his mexican atg contemporaries has long retired. He's the hopkins of mexico and l won't be surprises if he continues showing his greatness til he reach his 50's. A rare boxing specimen who we must enjoy watching while still around.

I didn't see Bradley as all that close. It was a clear Bradley win. Mayweather was a white wash. Pac was closer but that's more knowing the fighter. Like I said before he's not at all a great WW anyone making that case in borderline insane. He's a mexican ATG and maybe but not def...an overall ATG. It's to discussion. This thread holds weight, some people claiming marquez is a certified ATG without a doubt, maybe are outside their bounds.
