Found it ridiculous that Alvarado's corner wanted a stoppage of the fight and Tony Weeks decided that the corner's decision was not valid. The corner is there to guide the fighter and protect the fighter from himself. That was a bad move. So if the corner would have thrown in the towel while the round was going, he would of threw it back?
When you say "didn't let him hold and hit" you mean not letting him fight inside right? That's why i chuckled a bit when you said that Cortez "followed the rules of boxing". The rules would have only been violated if Hatton was committing fouls, which he was not doing. If anything, Floyd was not "following the rules" since he was using elbows. Watch any old time fight and tell me if the ref is breaking the fight every few seconds. The funny thing is, is that i was rooting for Floyd in that fight and still root for him today, but BS is BS. When the ref took away Hatton's inside fighting, the fight was over.
These ref's today are real crooked and has ruined some potentially great fights. Some are paid off, and the others think that the fans pay to see them instead of the fighters. Just like that ball headed idiot ref that kept screaming at Mike Mollo over every little thing when he fought Arthur Szpilka in the first fight.
You can't hold and hit a guy. You can hit a guy with your free arm if you're being held or clinched until the refs break you. Hatton made a notorious living off of holding and hitting. That is not part of the rules.
Don't make this a Hatton fought clean Floyd used his elbow. A ref enforces rules. He doesn't just take points for fouls. Minor infractions happen and the ref is there to enforce the rules.

so he didnt have any excuses about a premature stoppage like he did in the first rios fight. Tony did an amazing job of putting closure on the fight without controversy or any "what ifs". Great job tony!!
nah. the refs job is to secure the safety of the fighter, not worry about his feelings in a post fight interview.

Weeks first long count for Alvarado was wrong too, he wanted to keep him in the fight even when his corner didn't. Taken together with his poor performance in the Matthysse fight, Weeks has shown himself to be a partial hometown referee.
He used to be really good. he caught a case of Joe Cortezitis.

i thought he would get counted out as well
you don't count to 10, you wave the fight off @ 10. weeks could have easily called that fight off, as alvarado cut it so close.
in weeks' defense, and i've discussed this with some bsceners, alvarado essentially had two chief seconds. he has his "trainer" and then rudy hernandez, who is a cutman by trade, who gives him instructions.
you only get one chief second, and i think he's the only guy allowed to stop the fight for you. i know your cutman cannot stop it if he's onyl being brought in as a cutman.
It's a bit stupid, never seen it happen but it is allowed for the referee to throw the towel out of the ring if the corner throws it in.
Cotto-foreman. 6:55
The problem i have is he should have stopped the fight even without the corner saying stop it or alvarado. If alvarado said he wanted to continue, he would let him fight? He was taking a bad beating a stumbling all over the place with no legs, it was clearly time to stop it!
Yes, the problem with bypassing the corner's pleas (to stop it) is, what if Mike had said he wanted to continue? Does the corner then argue with him or Weeks to stop the fight?

I remember seeing this happen - Michael Katsidis vs. Graham Earl - and it was the right decision. After getting knocked down Earl came back strong in the round knocked Katsidis down (if my memory serves me right)
I think a lot of fans new to the sport are not understanding what Weeks did. Its not uncommon for a ref to want to see for himself what a fighter wants. Especially in slugfests where a lot of heart is on the line, there is nothing wrong with asking the fighter if he wants to continue. It all helps the ref make a better decision.
Weeks did nothing wrong and continues to be a top ref.

Didn't the ref do that in Cotto vs Foreman?
In a brutal fight that one boxer is taking tremendous punishment, any ref that doesn't stop the fight if the corner give the go ahead is a retard.
C: We want to stop the fight.
R: Your fighter still want to fight.
C: We said fight is over.
R: Fight is still on, your fighter hasn't said no.
Why should a fighter have to say no mas before the fight could be stop, if Provo corner was to tell Week that if you don't stop this fight we're done because this man could be kill, Week should step in.
The ref was a feckin idiot, yes it says inly the ref can stop the fight but if the corner are saying stop the fight then the ref should stop the fight.
Why embarrass a fighter who has nothing left in the tank.
Cortez followed the rules of boxing. He didn't let Hatton hold and hit, and Hatton was a dead man after that.

I agree. I didn't like how he got in Mike's face asking him to say it. It's the corners job to stop it and protect their fighter from himself and from the fans. He would have got less shiet if Weeks just let the corner stop it.
Yeah, that first PAC/Marquez fight was before Cortez started to take side money. His work in the Mayweather/Hatton fight was one of, if not the worst refereeing jobs I've ever saw. It's falls perfectly in line with Klitschko/Povetkin but on a higher level.Cortez followed the rules of boxing. He didn't let Hatton hold and hit, and Hatton was a dead man after that.
I highly doubt tony weeks asked him directly to embarrass or belittle mike, he was just giving mike the benefit of the doubt being champ and in his hometown and making sure that is what he wanted to do.
Without a doubt. No way Weeks was trying to embarrass Mike, IMO. How unprofessional is that? Mike was fighting in his hometown and the crowd was absolutely electric throughout the fight. The corner was talking about it but they seemed unsure, like you said he just wanted to make sure that's what Mike wanted.
